Sydney Fish Market

June 6, 2012 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
The Sydney Fish Market is a must-go destination for everyone, especially if you’re a fan of seafood. After all, it is the second largest seafood market in the world and boasts some of the freshest varieties of seafood that you can find in the Southern Hemisphere!
I was looking forward to devouring scallops, sashimi and oysters!

It has been raining incessantly over the past couple of days but the rain and throngs of tourists could not stop us in our quest to savour these delicacies.

The oysters are so sweet and succulent. Have an oyster here and you’ll truly feel that the world is your oyster.

If you’re adventurous and don’t require much sleep (unlike me), you can also book a Behind the Scenes Tour to catch all the action during the auction (sounds a little like a tongue-twister, doesn’t it?) in the wee hours of the morning.

One of our friends recommended that we try the scampi (sashimi-style), which is a type of small lobster, so I gamely bought one home to try. I must admit that it looks a little disgusting because its head is so much bigger than its body. Some of my friends love prawn heads and would suck out all the juices within. I know Jun would probably love this because the scampi’s head is beyond enormous. LOL but alas, I just couldn’t bring myself to try the scampi’s head. Oh, but the flesh…when I took a bite at it, it was oozing with a sweetness that words alone could not describe. Everyone should definitely give it a go!

Cakes, Sweets and Chocolates

June 1, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
I haven’t been doing much these days except eat, cook and eat some more. I can totally understand why people put on weight in Australia, or even become diabetic. The cakes, sweets and chocolates here are so wonderful I could eat them for all 3 meals.

Here I was, at New York Cafe at Chatswood, drinking hot chocolate.

JW was devouring a bun. I always joke that he has this impeccable ability to make anything that he eats look delicious. Don’t you agree?

Here’s what he can’t do without – coffee, although it does nothing to keep him awake. In fact, it does the exact opposite. He feels sleepy right after coffee.

What I can’t live without in Sydney – desserts. This carrot cake is sooo yummy! I also had my green tea snow ice fix at ZenQ recently and have been eating chocolates just about everyday.

I never really had a sweet tooth in Singapore, but I guess Australia changed everything.

At this rate, Diabetes will soon become my best friend.

Celebrating Mum’s Birthday at Ivins

May 15, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments

I must have said it a thousand times at least, but Ivins is one of my family’s favourite restaurants. The food is always tasty and flavourful, which explains why the bulk of our family gatherings tend to take place here. In fact, we celebrated my mum’s birthday here some time back in April as my family loves the peranakan dishes.

Some of the dishes that really tickle my tastebuds include ayam tempra, ayam goreng, sambal kang kong, itek tim (salted vegetables and duck soup) and chai pok egg.

Here’s my outfit for the day. I looked pretty tired as I had just recovered from a bout of flu when this picture was taken.

This week is a busy week for me as I’m trying as much as I can to catch up with family and friends before I take off again next Saturday. It doesn’t help that I just received news that my grandmother has been warded. I spent 4 hours chatting with her at the hospital yesterday because she was feeling lonely and helpless. ๐Ÿ™ I can only hope that things will take a change for the better soon and that she’ll have a speedy recovery. Please keep her in your prayers too.

Dinner at Hide Yamamoto

May 6, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments

We had dinner at Hide Yamamoto after visiting the exhibitions at MBS. The restaurant, owned by world-renowned Japanese born and Italian/French trained chef Yamamoto, was so popular, it was fully booked. We were left with the counter seats, but that also meant that that we got to see the food preparation process right before our eyes. It was quite an eye-opening experience watching the chefs work their culinary magic with deft hands.

We shared a plate of california maki and had a ramen each as we were eager to fill our tummies that evening after all the walking that we did. The ramen broth was rich and the ingredients were generously piled on top of the succulent noodles. I had the seafood ramen in a small portion and boy was I surprised when I saw the huge tiger prawn and a whole in-shell scallop topped with cheese. I feel hungry just thinking about it as the ingredients were very fresh. The quality and fragrance of the rice used in the california maki definitely surpassed that of other sushi joints too. I can’t wait to head back to try the other items on the menu!

Delicious Cafe

April 8, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments
With a name like delicious, one would naturally have high expectations of what the cafe has to offer, especially when people make a beeline for it. Well, the decor was pleasant – simple, classy and most importantly, unpretentious and laid-back.

We were recommended the most popular dishes in the cafe, but both were not up to mark and certainly not value-for-money. The main courses here are reasonably priced at between $10-$20, but honestly, we felt that we could definitely do a much better job at cooking. Indeed, it is very disappointing that delicious cafe does not serve delicious food and its name is deemed a misnomer.

We left feeling immensely unsatisfied with the meal. If we were to head there again (hopefully not), I think we’ll just have drinks and maybe dessert. Besides its decor, the only other saving grace is its convenient location at Scotts Square. I’m sorry, but I would rather have my tasty hawker food any time. ๐Ÿ˜›

Jewel Coffee

November 16, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
One early Saturday morning at 11a.m., 3 girls (Karen, Jun and I) decided to meet at Jewel Coffee for brunch.

Situated right at the heart of the CBD at One Shenton Way, Jewel Coffee has one of the best pancakes in Singapore, second only to Riders’ Cafe’s.

If you’re a pancake lover, you shouldn’t miss out on this one!

The pancakes here are very fluffy, and although they’re less thick that those at Riders, the rich buttery flavour makes up for its lack of height (hm..for some strange reason, it sounds like I’m referring to a person instead :P).

What I really like about the pancakes here is the whipped cream. It has a very light consistency and has just the right amount of sugar, definitely a perfect match for the pancakes.

Barcelona: Moo Restaurant

October 27, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Moo Restaurant is a one-Michelin star restaurant at Omm Hotel in Barcelona. Having heard so many wonderful things about Spanish food, we had to give it a try!

This restaurant is highly recommended by Quotient TravelPlanner, our travel planner which provides private customized travel. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our impression of the restaurant was sealed even before our meals were served. The cozy minimalist decor and warm, attentive service were all it took to make us happy.

And of course, we were over the moon when the food was served.

This slice of lightly toasted cheese bread was so delicious I could eat up an entire loaf if not for the fact that I had to save some space for my main course.

The entrees were beyond spectacular. It was here that we had our first taste of molecular gastronomy.

We were on cloud nine, popping in these little cubes into our mouths and waiting for the explosion of flavours as they burst inside our mouths, releasing such juicy goodness that is only fit for a king.

The foamy egg white and salmon roe concoction was divine. Even JW, who usually shuns fish roe, savoured every spoonful of it.

Then, it was time for our main course. I had the red mullet with tomato confit and pepper broth.

The skin is pan fried to crispy perfection while the meat is so soft and tender it melts in your mouth – a wonderful combination that tantalized my taste buds to no end.

JW had the veal tenderloin with herbal butter. The juicy, succulent meat is the highlight of this dish. The meat is amazingly tender, almost to the point that it dissolves in your mouth without chewing.

Check out the generous serving of herb butter, the perfect accompaniment to the mouth-watering veal tenderloin.

Finally, we had the white chocolate souffle with red fruits for dessert. Unlike the usual souffles, the outer layer of this white chocolate souffle is made up of a thin, crispy white chocolate wafer, which forms a protective layer over the creamy white chocolate mousse. It was so yummy!!

As if dessert was not sweet enough, we were treated to candies and chocolates to end the entire meal on an even sweeter note.

We were so satisfied with the meal we’ll definitely head back to Moo Restaurant on our next visit to Barcelona!

Supper in JB

March 28, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
Jun brought us to JB for supper on a whim yesterday and goodness gracious, I didn’t know I’ve been missing out on all the cheap and good food in JB all these years!

Our first stop was at ไฝ•ๆ˜Ž่ฎฐ Wanton Noodle, a famous Wanton Noodle shop with franchises all over JB. The noodles are handmade and very bouncy!

Then, we popped by an obscure lane along Pelangi for “luk luk”, which is essentially very similar to Japanese yakitori. These skewered food are served by make-shift vans that typically only start operating at night. I took the photo below when this particular stall just started operations at 11+pm and it was already terribly packed!

All you need to do is pick up a metal plate, select your favourite skewered food and wait for the servers to grill it (they’ll marinate it with salt, pepper and sometimes mayonnaise) before frying to further enhance the taste. You can also choose to have it boiled but I would much rather have unhealthy yet flavourful fried food any time!!

At this rate, it looks like I’ll be making more frequent trips to our neighbouring country. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Laurent Bernard

March 24, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Laurent Bernard at Wessex Estate is one of my favourite joints for chilling out on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Wessex Estate, to me, is one of Singapore’s best kept secrets. I like the tranquil surroundings and large fields dotted with preserved black and white colonial styled bungalows from the pre-WWII era.

Every time I head down to Wessex, I feel as though I’m talking a walk down memory lane, back to the days when Singapore was part of the British colony. The rustic, bohemian vibe provides the perfect atmosphere for a quiet afternoon, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Laurent Bernard, previously known as The Chocolate Factory, specialises in chocolates and desserts of impeccable quality. Its hot chocolate is the best I’ve tasted in Singapore and the chocolate souffle is beyond divine. Unfortunately, the chocolate souffle is only served on certain days at this particular outlet. Nonetheless, you can find the elusive souffle at Laurent Bernard’s other outlet at Robertson Quay as it is served there everyday.

Besides Laurent Bernard, I’m a big fan of Colbar as well, which used to be a canteen for the British troops based at Portsdown Road. More on that charming little cafe another time.

Here’s what I wore for a casual coffee date with the hubby.

Potion@Nostalgia Hotel

March 20, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
I was craving for tau sar pao (bun with red bean paste) and was determined to get my fix at Forty Hands. I just couldn’t get its soft fluffy dough and silky smooth red bean paste out of my mind.
Alas, when we arrived at Tiong Bahru, it had already closed for the day! I didn’t know that Forty Hands only opens till 6.30p.m. on Sundays. Feeling somewhat disappointed, we took a stroll in the neighbourhood in search of other yummy food.

Lady luck must have been shining on us, for we stumbled upon a gem of a find – Potion Cafe & Bar, which is located within the premises of Nostalgia Hotel (I know it sounds sleazy but it really isn’t!).

We were attracted by its colonial style decor and al fresco dining concept, but the affordable set dinner was what really drew us in. There was a 3-course set dinner offer at S$30++ for UOB card members! We were a little skeptical at first, but once the appetizers came, we knew we were in for a treat.

Not only did our garlic prawns and bruschettas come in huge servings, they were well-presented and most importantly, very delicious. There were about 8-10 large and succulent prawns marinated in a creamy garlic sauce. I also loved that the bruschettas had just the right amount of basil and tomatoes drizzled in olive oil.

We both had the Wagyu steak for our main course and we have nothing but rave reviews for the salacious steak. After trying the steak at The Cliff, I have been pining for it hopelessly and no other steak comes close, really. And just in case you were wondering, no, Morton’s doesn’t even come close. Surprisingly, I thought the steak here was the 2nd best steak I’ve had since The Cliff’s.

The meal ended on a sweet note with desserts and I had absolutely no complaints about that either. I think that says a lot given that I am a rather fastidious eater.

I would highly recommend this cafe for its value-for-money set meals and affable service. The quality of the food, despite the pocket-friendly price tag, left me quite astounded.

Here’s the address for those who are interested in trying it out:
