Rosettes, Lace & Liz Lisa

October 31, 2011 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I’ve been really attracted to rosettes recently. In this outfit alone, you can probably spot a gazillion rosettes all over, not just on my bag, but on my shoes and even in my hair.

Lace top & corduroy lace shorts from Argyle Centre, Hong Kong
Rosette bag from ClubCouture
Camellia hair clip from H&M
Transparent heels with flower clip-on from Far East Plaza

I know it’s fall now, but my heart still pines for the Liz Lisa Spring/Summer 2011 collection. The floral prints, frills and lace apparel are so charming and whimsical, they actually remind me a little of Alice in Wonderland.

These pictures brightened up my otherwise dreary and rainy Monday afternoon. Hope they had the same effect on you as well! πŸ™‚

Barcelona: Casa Batllo

October 29, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Located along Passieg de Gracia and literally a stone’s throw from Casa Mila, Casa Batllo is another work of art created by the ingenious architect Antoni Gaudi between 1904-1906.

Gaudi drew inspirations from science fiction novels by Jules Verne and refurbished the entire building to resemble an underwater world. The mosiac tiles here may look normal to you but they were broken into pieces to fit the curved surfaces of the walls. The wavy glass panels also give visitors the illusion that they are truly under the sea.

Gaudi’s emphasis on light and colour can be seen in the building well. Smaller windows are used at the top where there is more exposure to natural light and larger windows are placed at the bottom of the well to allow more light to flow through the building.

Marine allusions can be found in every part of the building, including the doors and ceilings. Don’t the pictures above resemble corals and seashells?

From the outside of the building, you’ll notice bone-like structures made from Montjuic stones. This is why Casa Batllo is also known as The House of Bones.

Along the way up to the roof, you’ll be greeted by beautiful arched ceilings which supposedly resemble the body of a dragon. I found that rather puzzling until I set foot on the roof.

Now do you see the resemblance to a dragon?
Gaudi always had a thing for making chimneys look anything but boring. It’s amazing how I always feel like I’ve stepped into a fairy-tale whenever I visit his works. His creations are beyond magical and totally out of this world.

Polka Dots Overdose

October 28, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
I just came back from Hong Kong with a whole bunch of socks. I’ve been crazy about socks recently, especially those with lace details and am looking forward to pairing them with all my shoes. πŸ˜‰

One fateful rainy day, I decided it was time my long sleeve polka dot tunic see the light of day again.

The last time I wore this was when I was holidaying in Prague here . I think it looks a little different with my pearl detachable collar and a pair of lacy polka dot socks.

Which look do you prefer?

Polka dot tunic from Far East Plaza

Lace polka dot socks from Sogo, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Detachable pearl collar from LaForet, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

Quilted flats from Chanel

Have a great weekend everyone!

And if you’re attending any Halloween parties this weekend, have a ball of a time!

Barcelona: Moo Restaurant

October 27, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Moo Restaurant is a one-Michelin star restaurant at Omm Hotel in Barcelona. Having heard so many wonderful things about Spanish food, we had to give it a try!

This restaurant is highly recommended by Quotient TravelPlanner, our travel planner which provides private customized travel. πŸ™‚

Our impression of the restaurant was sealed even before our meals were served. The cozy minimalist decor and warm, attentive service were all it took to make us happy.

And of course, we were over the moon when the food was served.

This slice of lightly toasted cheese bread was so delicious I could eat up an entire loaf if not for the fact that I had to save some space for my main course.

The entrees were beyond spectacular. It was here that we had our first taste of molecular gastronomy.

We were on cloud nine, popping in these little cubes into our mouths and waiting for the explosion of flavours as they burst inside our mouths, releasing such juicy goodness that is only fit for a king.

The foamy egg white and salmon roe concoction was divine. Even JW, who usually shuns fish roe, savoured every spoonful of it.

Then, it was time for our main course. I had the red mullet with tomato confit and pepper broth.

The skin is pan fried to crispy perfection while the meat is so soft and tender it melts in your mouth – a wonderful combination that tantalized my taste buds to no end.

JW had the veal tenderloin with herbal butter. The juicy, succulent meat is the highlight of this dish. The meat is amazingly tender, almost to the point that it dissolves in your mouth without chewing.

Check out the generous serving of herb butter, the perfect accompaniment to the mouth-watering veal tenderloin.

Finally, we had the white chocolate souffle with red fruits for dessert. Unlike the usual souffles, the outer layer of this white chocolate souffle is made up of a thin, crispy white chocolate wafer, which forms a protective layer over the creamy white chocolate mousse. It was so yummy!!

As if dessert was not sweet enough, we were treated to candies and chocolates to end the entire meal on an even sweeter note.

We were so satisfied with the meal we’ll definitely head back to Moo Restaurant on our next visit to Barcelona!

Dirty Linen

October 26, 2011 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
Before you jump to conclusions, no, I’m not about to talk about my dirty clothes here. I’m talking about a new online store in town by the name of Dirty Linen!
Dirty Linen is one of the few multi-brand websites in Singapore and all their apparel are exclusively self-manufactured.

I love their home brand, Dirty Linen, which carries casual, wearable pieces in a myriad of colours. They’re perfect for weekends, lunch dates with your girl pals or even for school!

I was totally bowled over by the cute rabbit prints on my Dirty Linen Short Sleeve Print Dress in Blue.

I paired the dress with a detachable pearl collar, liz lisa wedges and a pretty pink hair bow for present shopping at Miu Miu. πŸ˜‰
I also wore a petticoat underneath the dress as I wanted it to look a little more poufy but trust me, it looks great without it as well.

Besides casual wear, Dirty Linen also carries corporate wear through their Benediction label.

About Benediction
Drawing inspiration from elements of fashion eras past, local brand Benediction pays homage to the styles of yesterday and adapts it for the contemporary woman. Designs veer toward the classic and sleek with soft, flowy breathable fabrics and clean lines in muted neutrals and deep hues. Privately manufactured right here in Singapore and with a production cap at less than 5 pieces per size, you won’t find many wearing the same garment as you with this exclusive new label.

Here, I’m wearing the Benediction Asymmetric V Dress in White.

It’s a classic minimalist dress with an asymmetrical neckline for that added edginess without compromising on sophistication.

The modest length and well-tailored silhouette also ensure that you’ll always look professional for work. If you’ve an after-work function to attend, just throw on some accessories like what I did here, and you’re all set to go!

Most importantly, the Benediction label’s exclusivity is unrivaled as the store stocks less than 5 pieces per design, so rest assured you wouldn’t be caught dead in the same dress as someone else. πŸ˜‰

For all you lucky ladies out there, there’s a promo for apparel under the Benediction label now! Just key in the code BENEDICTION10 upon checkout to receive 10% off your purchase.

In addition, you’ll enjoy free shipping for all your purchases with the code FREESHIP.

For updates on the latest promotions and new arrivals, do join their mailing list on their home page here!

Dirty Linen will also be adding more brands to their store soon, so do keep a lookout for them!

The dearly departed

October 22, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
I attended Charmaine’s funeral today.

Charmaine was a warrior. Despite all the suffering that she had to go through, she left with a peaceful smile on her face. I heard from Jo that she was always very considerate and never wanted anyone to worry for her.

She was here for a mere 6 years, but she always seemed wise beyond her age. Her optimism, strength, thoughtfulness and zest for life will easily put any one of us to shame.

Charmaine’s funeral reignited the feelings of despair that struck me when Reyna left suddenly and when Keith went missing.

To this day, I pray that Keith is still alive somewhere and that he’ll be reunited with his family soon.

While I believe that the dearly departed are in a better place, a place filled with happiness, joy and laughter, a place where pain and suffering do not exist, the pain of losing someone close to you never really goes away.

Losing someone close is truly a life-changing experience.

But, memories of the person, how special he/she was and the lessons he/she taught you about how you should lead your life, will stay with you forever and be your driving force.

Most importantly, I believe that somewhere up there, they are all looking down upon us with smiles on their faces, telling us that we’ll meet again someday at the end of the rainbow, when our time on earth is complete. πŸ™‚

Autumn/Winter Trends 2011

October 22, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
Just because our island is sunny all year round doesn’t mean that we can’t experiment with autumn/winter trends.
Valentino, Oscar de la renta and Christian Dior are some of my favourite designer labels as they have versatile and easy to wear fall/winter pieces that we can easily incorporate into our wardrobe without having to sweat buckets in our weather.

Likewise, ClubCouture‘s beautiful autumn/winter collection offers a wide variety of choices to ensure that you’re always at the forefront of fashion without having to break the bank. πŸ˜‰

1) Textures and Rosettes

One of the trends that I’ve spotted this season is the use of textures to create feminine looks. In particular, Valentino has a couple of dresses with gorgeous chiffon rosettes

When I spotted the rose tote bag from ClubCouture, I knew I had to get it. This is also one of my favourite items from ClubCouture to date.

I brought it with me to Hong Kong last week because it goes extremely well with my girly clothes and is practical enough for travelling.

It is so roomy I can stuff all my travel documents, make-up pouch, umbrella, sweater and shoes into it!

2) Lace

Classy, elegant and sophisticated, lace exudes femininity and sensuality like no other fabric.

Lace has always been a mainstay in Valentino’s collections, which is why I love their designs to bits.

Lace, especially black lace, is ubiquitous in ClubCouture’s line of apparel.

The pansy lace dress is one of my favourites, but it ran out of UK size 6 and I’m still waiting for restocks to arrive. Can’t wait!

Here’s another one of my favourites from ClubCouture. It’s a pastel lace and tulle dress that I wore for some street shopping in Hong Kong (together with my hair extensions πŸ˜‰ ).

I love the details, especially the flowy tulle skirt and floral lace, but unfortunately, the dress has already been sold out.

For those of you who love girly styles like this, there’s a similar one here.

Check out ClubCouture’s lookbook for more inspirations now!

Have a great weekend! πŸ™‚

Barcelona: Casa Mila

October 15, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Casa Mila, also known as La Pedrera (the stone quarry) resembles an open quarry and is one of Gaudi’s most popular works. It is located right in the heart of the city so you definitely wouldn’t miss it!

Besides the clever use of space and light, Gaudi had a fascination with undulating curves, unique stairwells, ventilation towers and chimneys, as seen atop the glorious rooftop.

Call me greedy, but they all look like delicious meringue to me.I guess that’s how it is with art. There are so many ways to interpret it. πŸ˜‰

The interior was lavishly decorated with period furniture, artworks and ornaments to recreate what the apartment should have looked like in the past.

I was really taken by the design of the doors and hallways.

The beautiful curved surfaces are like the icing on the cake, both literally and metaphorically.

Did you notice how different the door knobs are as well? The interesting ergonomic designs were created by Gaudi.

Great design is about attention to detail, and Gaudi always seemed to put in 120% in everything that he did.

In one of the children’s rooms, I found a gorgeous doll house that I would love to take home with me too. I’ve always wanted a doll house as a kid and this is just perfect. It comes with chandeliers too!

Finally, here’s what I wore that day. πŸ™‚

Barcelona: Palau Guell & Park Guell

October 13, 2011 by Regina Chow 6 Comments
On our first day in Barcelona, we took a train to La Ramblas, a famous tourist street lined with souvenior shops and cafes. The moment we alighted, we were told over the PA system to beware of pickpockets! My friend got pickpocketed in Barcelona while she was on her honeymoon a long time back and had warned me several times before, so I held onto my bag very tightly and was constantly on high alert. LOL.

Along the way to lunch, we came across an interesting procession with these massive mascots on stilts. I don’t know what this procession is all about, but if anyone of you knows, could you enlighten me by leaving a comment?

I’m sure you know that tapas is a way of life here. We had some yummy tapas followed by a delicious glass of sangria before the real sight-seeing began.

Our first stop was Palau Guell, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Works of Antoni Gaudi”. Palau Guell, otherwise also known as the Guell Palace, was one of Gaudi’s first works and the residence of the wealthy Guell family (Eusebi Guell’s wealth then was estimated to be a jaw-dropping US$17 billion in today’s terms!).

Gaudi’s ingenius manipulation of space and natural light gave the tiny rooms an exceptionally spacious feel.

Another interesting feature of Palau Guell is the wrought iron gate (2nd photo from the top right). It was constructed such that inhabitants can view what is happening on the streets without compromising on privacy as passersby are unable to look into the house!

Our next stop was Park Guell, a park painstakingly designed by Gaudi. Doesn’t it remind you of a a fairytale? Those cute little houses remind me of my favourite dessert Baked Alaska. It also reminds me of the marzipan house in Hansel & Gretel. πŸ˜‰

Gaudi’s residence is nestled within the park and has since been converted into a museum to showcase some of his most extraordinary works of art.

I especially love the chairs he created. My favourite chair is the one with the heart-shaped backrest. It looks so exquisite and whimsical, it must have come out of a fairytale!!

If my luggage space and bank account allowed, I would have lugged all the chairs back to Singapore with me (replicas are on sale at the souvenir shops).
I was really amazed by Gaudi’s bedroom. I half-expected his bedroom to be as luxurious and magnificent as his architecture, so I was surprised to see that he lived in a sparsely decorated room with only basic furniture.

Perhaps, like Leonardo DaVinci, he too believed that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication?
