Fashion Fridays: Maxi Dresses for Work

February 27, 2015 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
It’s tough to find middle ground when it comes to maxi dresses. They tend to fall into either end of a spectrum, either too casual or too formal.
I have to thank my lucky stars and also Sushi for taking the plunge and placing an order for this lace maxi dress from our supplier because “the one” that I’ve been looking for finally came along. Its shirt dress structure exudes a no-nonsense vibe while the delicate lace material lends a touch of feminine charm. Finally, a maxi dress that I can wear to work without looking underdressed or overdressed.

While it is easy to take a dress like this to work, I would suggest you reserve this either for Casual Fridays or evening functions if your office has a very strict dress code. You can choose to dress up the dress with a pair of heels or slip into a comfy pair of wedges to dress it down.
Generally speaking, with a statement dress like this, there’s hardly any need for accessorizing. But if you really want to, you could cinch your waist with a skinny belt and put on some stud earrings. I picked out a pearl belt from my mum’s wardrobe to accentuate the silhouette and bring out the vintage appeal.

I hope you enjoyed reading this week’s edition of Fashion Fridays. Have a great weekend ahead!

Samsung GALAXY ALPHA 4G+

February 26, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

The Samsung GALAXY ALPHA 4G+ is proof that good things come in small packages. Visually, it stands out from the sea of smartphones with its slim, sleek and stunning exterior. The luxurious shade of Frosted Gold exudes style and sophistication, making it the perfect fashion accessory for style mavens.
Practically speaking, it is
incredibly light, handy, and is so slim that it fits into the tiniest
clutches.  At just 6.7mm, The GALAXY ALPHA 4G+ may be Samsung’s slimmest and
most stylish phone to date, but it also packs a punch thanks to its Octa Core Processor and 4G+ LTE
Cat 6 capability. Now, I can surf the internet and stream my favourite
dramas at a much faster speed without compromising on the chic factor.
Its Ultra Power Saving Mode is very useful too as I am able to extend my remaining 10% battery life by up to 10 hours’ worth of standby time. As a result, I no longer have to carry a portable charger around with me on a daily basis. Additional features include fingerprint security,
which gives you the convenience of signing into websites such as Gmail
and Zalora as well as paying for your purchases using Paypal with the
swipe of a finger. I enjoy online shopping and this feature makes my
shopping experience absolutely fuss-free.

In my opinion, the key highlight of the Samsung GALAXY ALPHA 4G+ is its built-in 12MP Advanced Camera which comes with Fast Auto Focus to capture action shots, Selective Focus for shallow depth-of-field (i.e. sharp subject and blurred background) and Real Time HDR to preserve the light and colours to achieve life-like photos. If you enjoy taking photos, you will definitely love this phone.

Here are some unedited photos that I took with the Samsung GALAXY ALPHA 4G+. I was truly impressed by the photo quality as it certainly rivals that of my DSLR camera.
Selective Focus (Sharp Foreground, Blurred Background)

Selective Focus (Blurred Foreground, Sharp Background)

Selective Focus (Sharp Foreground, Blurred Background)

Selective Focus (Sharp Foreground, Blurred Background)
Pretty amazing, isn’t it? Perhaps it is about time for my bulky DSLR camera to take a backseat now.

The Samsung GALAXY ALPHA 4G+ is currently retailing at S$848 at all Samsung Experience Stores. Other than Frosted Gold, it also comes in Dazzling White and Charcoal Black.

Fashion: Chinese New Year 2015 OOTD

February 24, 2015 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

One of my favourite outfits for this year’s Chinese New Year celebration is this lovely Covet Vionette Flare Dress from Love,Bonito, which you may have already seen in my previous post on Love, Bonito’s Popup Store.
I love the oriental floral motifs, reminiscent of Chinese porcelain, although I did wish that the motifs could be even more defined to bring out the intricate design. What I really like about the dress is its cutting and the thick woven jacquard material, which enhances the dress’s beautiful fit-and-flare structure. And how could I forget the inner mesh tulle skirting which adds that extra oomph?

I went for a full-on matchy-matchy ensemble with electric blue shoes from Zara and my trusty birkin (just the right size for all the red packets and oranges). Practicality and comfort are of utmost importance to me given that house-to-house visitations often take up the entire day.

We managed to sneak in some time for a coffee break too and as we strolled down one of the back alleys along Little India, JW whipped out our new camera for some quick snaps. It is about time we scouted for some new lenses as we only have one compatible lens at the moment and unfortunately, that isn’t enough to maximize the true potential of our new baby.

Dress from Love, Bonito
Shoes from Zara
Bag from Hermes
Earrings from Korea
Singapore’s back alleys are one of the most interesting places to check out. They’re usually empty but yet there’s so much going on. The long alleys add depth and dimension (read: great for photography) while the varying wall textures, colourful pipes, doors of different shapes and sizes, and signature dark green bins lend interest and character to our concrete jungle. Even Sandara Park of 2NE1 has given her stamp of approval!

Happy Chinese New Year!
祝大家三羊开泰,喜洋洋!

Triumph In The Skies Movie Review

February 24, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Triumph in the Skies is one of the most memorable Hong Kong TVB drama series that I have watched to date. I caught both seasons previously and was eagerly anticipating the release of the movie adaptation. You can imagine my delight when Clover Films invited me to the Triumph in the Skies Singapore Gala Premiere, where I had the opportunity to meet the suave Julian Cheung and charming Charmaine Sheh in the flesh.

Triumph In The Skies Movie Review

Directed by Wilson Yip (Director of Ip Man and Ip Man 2) and Matt Chow (Director of Golden Chicken 3), the movie features some of the original cast from the original series, including Julian Cheung, Francis Ng, Kenneth Ma and Elena Kong, with the addition of new stars such as Louis Koo, Charmaine Sheh, Sammi Cheng and Amber Kuo.

Star studded cast? Checked.
Beautiful cinematography? Checked.
Romance? Checked.
Humour? Checked.

With all the right ingredients, the movie is geared for success at the box office. In fact, having a star studded cast is already half the battle won.

Diehard fans of the series may beg to differ, as the central theme of the movie hinges entirely on romance instead of the day-to-day challenges faced by pilots and air stewardesses, as depicted in the series. There were also times when Sam (played by Francis Ng) behaved in a way that seemed rather out of character and less relatable if you were to draw comparisons from the series.

However, given that the film was released during Chinese New Year and shortly after Valentine’s Day, I personally found the light-hearted humour and romantic storyline very apt and thoroughly entertaining; not forgetting the beautiful cinematography and breathtaking scenes set in picturesque England.

Do you need to watch the series to understand the movie? The answer is no, and that to me, is the deal clincher.

Watch it as it is, on a clean slate, without any baggage or comparisons drawn from the series. You would actually find the movie much more enjoyable this way.

Triumph In The Skies Movie Synopsis

Young pilot Branson (Louis Koo) recently takes over Skylette, his
father’s aviation empire, only to realize his old flames Cassie
(Charmaine Sheh) is a flight attendant there. Several years ago, he was
forced to break up with her and move to New York to take care of his
father’s business. To this day, the two continue to harbor feelings for
each other but decide to keep them bottled up.

In an effort to rebrand the airline, Branson invites rock idol TM to
star in an upcoming commercial and appoints Sam (Fransic Ng) as her
flying consultant. Incongruent in both tastes and experience, this odd
couple gets off on the wrong foot. As the shoot progresses, however,
they slowly discover each other’s merits, developing a strong mutual
attraction.
Jayden (Julien Cheung) has left Skylette Airline to become a pilot for
private jets. He meets the young and vivacious Kika (Kuo Tsai Chieh)
during a flight and assumes her to be wayward and shallow. But they turn
out to have a lot in common and start falling madly in love. At the
height of their romance, Jayden realizes almost too late the secret
behind her recalcitrance.

Each of the three relationships comes with its own setbacks. As long as
one can accept the imperfection of things, finding happiness—however
fleetingly—is a blessing in itself.

Foodpanda Review: Indian Curry House

February 23, 2015 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
There are times when all I want to do is stay at home and take a break from everything as it helps me to recharge. What do I do when it’s time for lunch or dinner then? I’d either whip up a simple meal or turn to foodpanda for more food options.
What’s foodpanda?
Foodpanda is an online food delivery platform that is available in over 45 countries worldwide.
All
you have to do is key in your postal code to find out which restaurants
are near you, browse through their menus, place your orders and your
meal will be delivered right to your doorstep. You can even opt for cash
on delivery if you prefer not to use credit card payment.
No access to a laptop or computer? You can also download the foodpanda mobile app and use it place your orders.

I’ve been using foodpanda for restaurant food delivery over the past two years, before this review opportunity even came up and it has never failed to deliver (haha!) when it comes to food quality and timeliness.

What did I order this time?

I usually order from Pasta Mania, but this time, I decided to try Indian Curry House. JW and I have been craving for Indian Butter Chicken and the numerous positive reviews online gave us the confidence to place our order with complete peace of mind.

We ordered a few other dishes to complete our meal and everything came within an hour. I was half expecting the food to be lukewarm, but was pleasantly surprised that every dish arrived piping hot.

As the portions were very generous, we invited a friend over to join us for dinner.

Butter Chicken & Kashmiri Rogan Josh

All of us were full of praise for the food as every dish was rich in taste and very flavourful. We initially thought that there would be more curry gravy than meat to fill our tummies, but every spoonful of curry came with slices of chicken or mutton to satiate the inner carnivores in us. We found both the Butter Chicken and Kashmiri Rogan Josh to be authentic and absolutely satisfying.

Aloo Gobi

The Aloo Gobi is a delightful vegetarian dish to accompany your favourite curries. The mix of potatoes and cauliflowers cooked in a blend of Indian spices is so delicious, we wasted no time in wiping the plate clean.

Chill Honey Potatoes are another addictive snack that would serve well as a side dish too. These are essentially Indian-style french fries. I did wish the fries were crispier but the touch of Indian spices is sure to perk up your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Chilli Honey Garlic Potatoes

Would I order from Indian Curry House again?
The answer is a resounding yes. In fact, throughout the meal, all three of us couldn’t stop nodding our heads in approval.
Being able to enjoy restaurant food in the comfort of our home is one of the pleasures in life that we truly appreciate and relish. With foodpanda, this wish is easily fulfilled.
Tired of takeaways, too lazy to eat out or cook?

Perhaps it is about time you checked out foodpanda too!

Sponsored Video: #changedestiny Beyond the Limits of My DNA – Misa Kuranaga

February 21, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
Do you believe that your future is shaped by your DNA?

SK-II believes that a woman’s destiny is created by herself and not determined by her DNA.

Misa Kuranaga, currently the Principal Ballerina of the world-renowned Boston Ballet, is the perfect example and how she changed her own destiny is featured in the video above.

Her rise to the top was fraught with challenges along the way. She was told she did not have the physical attributes of a ballerina. Standing at just 156cm, her critics opined that she was too short to stand out on stage and her hips were too narrow for the art of ballet.

Instead of giving up, she re-learned how to use her body and trained it to move extremely fast so as to stand out. She had to work doubly hard as her peers were much younger, but not once did she give up. Her hard work and perseverance eventually paid off.

It’s all in the mind, they say.  Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right. A positive mind leads to positive results and having a can-do spirit can help us to overcome any obstacles that come our way.

Indeed, Misa Kuranaga’s story serves as an inspiration to all of us. Watch the video to find out how she changed her destiny and how you can change yours too.

**This post is sponsored by SK-II, but as always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fitness: Power Plate at Croyez Studio

February 17, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

I’ve long heard about the benefits of Power Plate® equipment and how it enhances the effectiveness of your exercise routine to produce optimal results. Friends who have tried Power Plate® classes also shared with me that they could get an extremely thorough and intensive workout in just a short period of time.

Naturally, my curiosity was piqued and I couldn’t help but say yes to a Power Plate® session at Croyez Studio along with Karen and Raphael.

Croyez Studio is the first and only authorized Power Plate® and NARL® studio in Asia that offers both personalized training and group workouts. Located amidst lush greenery within Dempsey, it offers an exclusive studio perfect for individuals seeking a frills-free workout with a view.
There are classes everyday, 7 days a week, and you’ll definitely be able to find a class that fits your schedule and fitness level.

Unlike most fitness centres which are equipped with only a handful of Power Plate® machines, Croyez boasts a studio filled with these machines.

What are Power Plate® machines and what do they do?

Power Plate® equipment is the premium vibration device powering a new
dimension in wellness solutions for all ages, lifestyles and physical
abilities. It uses the principles of Acceleration Training™ to stimulate
the body’s natural response to vibration. These vibrations transmit
waves of energy throughout the body, activating muscle contractions
between 25 and 50 times per second, enhancing overall performance in
sessions as short as 15 minutes a day, 3 times a week.
Essentially, this means that you don’t have to spend as much time exercising to achieve the same results, which is great for our hectic lifestyles. In fact, as a result of the vibrations, you could lose 50% more weight than if you were to use conventional gym equipment.  Now, we have less of an excuse not to exercise!
Other measurable benefits related to Acceleration Training™ on Power Plate® equipment also include improved blood circulation, better muscle strength and flexibility, less cellulite and faster recovery.

How does it work?
Getting acquainted with the machines and how they operate is an integral part of the process as the different speed and timing buttons will vary the intensity of your workout. You need to familiarize yourself with all the buttons as you could be standing up at one point and seated at the next.

What types of exercises can you do with Power Plate® machines?
The Power Plate® machine can be easily incorporated into your favourite workout routine, ranging from yoga, kickboxing, muay thai, pilates, body combat or aerobics. These classes are all readily available at Croyez Studio.
We tried the PBox class, which is the most popular class at Croyez Studio.  PBox includes moves inspired by Muay Thai, Taebo, Body Combat and MMA using 1kg hand weights.

The
adrenalin-pumping cardio and strength building workout was paired with
fist-pumping music to keep you fired up as you push your physical limits
and unleash your beast mode!

The
whole workout took just 40 minutes (including 20 minutes of warm-up and
cool-down exercises), but at the end of it, I could feel the intensity
of the workout running through every vein of my body as there were no breaks in between.

There were times when thoughts of giving up flooded our minds but the instructors were a huge source of motivation. Bursting with energy throughout, they encouraged
every one of us to persevere and keep up with the pace.

Their positivity definitely rubbed off us as we gritted our teeth and pressed on, in the hope of reaping the fruits of our labour.
One of my fitness goals is to tone up my arms and surprisingly, I achieved this after just one session! My arms may have
ached for days after, but my biceps firmed up immediately and my arms
became much toner and muscular. I was impressed.

To reward ourselves for the hard work, we were treated to a round of massage using the Power Plate® machine during the cooling down segment. Massage helps to relieve any muscle soreness and aids in muscle recovery after an intensive workout.

If you are worried about weight gained after all the feasting during Chinese New Year, there’s another machine for weight loss at Croyez Studio which would probably interest you.
What is NARL®?
NARL®, which stands for NorAdrenalin ReLease, uses a unique, safe and patented combination of ultrasound frequency and
intensity that enables a local release of noradrenaline, through a specific
stimulation of the sympathetic nerve terminals. This local noradrenaline release will trigger a natural lipolysis from nearby adipocytes.
Local
fat loss is observed if the released Free Fat Acids and Glycerol are
burned (used as energy). This localised stimulation bypasses our central
nervous system, hence there is no fat rebound effect, and long lasting
results are guaranteed.Lipolysis is activated by catecholamine (adrenaline and
noradrenaline) and it relates to the breakdown of Triglycerides contained in our fat cells (adipocytes) into FFA and Glycerol, source of
energy.
Once FFA and Glycerol are released in blood stream, they
have to be burned. If not, this energy will be re-synthesized into fat
by homeostasis principle.NARL® is clinically proven to be effective
locally and on all kinds of fat (cellulite, subcutaneous and visceral)
. For optimal results, it is recommended that you use NARL® before your workout.

If you are planning to try out the Power Plate®, I would highly recommend that you attend fitness classes at a studio such as Croyez which specializes in the use of these machines.
This is because Acceleration Training is considered a less conventional form of exercise and you would benefit greatly from a total body workout specially tailored to your needs by a trained professional.  It also helps to have a trainer watching your alignment and motivating you class after class to achieve your desired results.

As with all forms of exercise, results vary from individual to individual. Nonetheless, most people are able to see visible changes in their body after 3 sessions a week over 3 weeks.
I fall into the category of people who build muscle very quickly and I saw results instantly after just one session.I felt an immense sense of achievement after my Power Plate workout and am looking forward to yet another session after the CNY feasting. My
biceps are still rock hard even as I am writing this post many weeks down the
road.
Pretty incredible, isn’t it?

Fashion: Valentino on Valentine's Day (OOTD)

February 15, 2015 by Regina Chow 2 Comments

Time flies. It seems like only yesterday when we got together but in the blink of an eye, 15 years has passed. Yesterday marked our 15th Valentine’s Day celebration together and while we no longer celebrate it with a big bang complete with a lavish dinner spread and overpriced flower bouquets, JW still makes it a point to surprise me with a restaurant reservation.
We had a private and cozy lunch by the Singapore River at Absinthe. Absinthe may be a French restaurant, but I really like how they did away with the frills and formality of typical french dining, choosing to adopt a more casual and fuss-free approach instead. After our sumptuous lunch, we took a stroll along the river, which eventually took us to Victoria Concert Hall.

Victoria Concert Hall holds many fond childhood memories for me as my mum and I used to bond over SSO concerts held here. It was practically a weekly affair for the two of us as I was taking piano lessons then and was really into classical music.
The Victoria Concert Hall of today looks different from what I remembered it to be, but still, I couldn’t help but marvel at this slice of history. Many of the colonial elements remained untouched but modern touches were added to lend a contemporary air to the newly refurbished architecture.
I couldn’t resist the wonderful photo opportunity and here’s presenting my outfit for Valentine’s Day.

“Who needs a Valentine when you have Valentino?” I came across this witty quip on Valentino’s instagram account and couldn’t help but let out a chuckle because I happened to be clad in Valentino from head to toe yesterday.
I guess I’m greedy and also the perfect example of someone who wants to have her cake and eat it because I need both my Valentino and my Valentine.

 Dress from Red Valentino
Rockstud Pumps from Valentino
Swarovski Earrings from Korea

How was your Valentine’s Day? Here’s wishing you and your other half a lifetime of bliss, happiness and love!

Fashion Fridays: Snupped

February 13, 2015 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

In this digital age, it is only natural that our laptops, tablets and smartphones have since become extensions of ourselves. These tech gadgets are now such an integral part of our lives that it is absolutely necessary to purchase protective cases or bags since we carry our gadgets with us all the time.

Protective sleeves for tech gadgets are a dime a dozen these days but the market is sorely lacking in options that allow consumers to express our individuality and sense of style.

Snupped is a local Singaporean brand that aims to change all that and more with their fully customizable sleeves, covers and cases for all your gadgets. Not only is the size customizable, you can also pick a design from their selection of designer artworks or better yet, create and upload your very own design to make it completely one-of-a-kind! You can even add handles to your cases to make it easier to tote around.

Ever since I received my Samsung Galaxy Tab S, I’ve been on the lookout for a stylish tablet cover that would go with all my outfits and yet stand out from the crowd. This edgy Vintage Skull design by Ali Gulec ticked all my checkboxes. And as you know, the rest was history.

Aside from its sleek and stunning design, the cover is practical and fits my Galaxy Tab S to a T.

It also doubles up as a fashion accessory, adding an artistic flair to my monochrome themed outfit effortlessly.

I had every intention to put together an elegant ensemble with a hint of edginess and if I may say so myself, I think my Snupped tablet cover played a critical role in achieving what I set out to do.

Pants from Love Bonito
Shoes from Valentino
Tablet Cover from Snupped
When the cover is closed, all you see is an intricate montage of floral and baroque motifs, but when you open it up, the beautiful skull design is revealed in its full glory. I love the air of mystery.
More importantly, the probability of me bumping into someone else with the same cover is nearly zilch. I know for sure that I wouldn’t want to be caught dead in the same outfit as a random passerby. By that same token, why would you
want to have the same generic protective case for your gadget when
everyone else on the street is using it too?

Photography Credits: Ashley Cheang
Once your order is placed, Snupped ships in 5-8 business days. Pretty fast for all that customization, don’t you think? Free shipping is provided in Singapore and there’s also a 30 days return policy.

I had a wonderful time doing this shoot in collaboration with Carrie, who is one of the Top 10 finalists in the Fashion category at the Omy.sg Singapore Blog Awards 2014, and her photographer friend Ashley.

For more ideas and styling inspirations with Snupped, do pop by Carrie’s blog. Carrie got herself a laptop case with handles and it’s amazingly roomy and practical, especially if you’re a big bag kind of girl. It’s the perfect size for traveling too if you ask me.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful weekend ahead (plus Valentine’s Day celebration tomorrow)!
