Shalom’s Arrival

27th May 2011 marked the birth of Shalom, my dear friend Grace’s daughter! This bundle of joy is also my goddaughter. Congratulations to Grace, Jay and I! I’m finally a mummy too!

Shalom takes after her mummy as she has the heartiest laugh and loudest screams that can be heard from afar. She sure has strong lungs despite her tender age.

Baby Shalom has doting parents who shower her with undivided attention and love. I was at the hospital on both days and I can attest to the fact that being a parent is really no mean feat because babies can cry for no rhyme or reason, rendering you helpless at times.

Thankfully, like her mummy, Shalom seems to enjoy R&B music, so all you need to do is rap to get into her good books! Yo, yo, check it out! She’ll probably feel right at home at Butter Factory. 😉

I popped by town for a quick bite and some shopping after visiting Grace and Shalom at the hospital. And as usual, I’ll be ending this post with my outfit for the day:

RSAF Open House 2011

Attending the RSAF Open House this year was a spontaneous decision as we happened to be around the vicinity. The last time I attended an air show was when I was 5 years old?

If you are into fighter jets and helicopters, this would most certainly be a feast for your eyes! On display at the Paya Lebar Air Base were the latest F-15SG fighter aircraft, F-16C/D fighter aircraft , AH-64D attack helicopters, as well as the AS-332 Super Puma and CH-47 Chinook helicopters

I was pretty excited about getting up close and personal with the F15 aircraft so off we went to fiddle with the cockpit! We spent about half an hour queuing for our turn but it was well worth the wait.

Finally, it was my turn to go up to the cockpit!

I was amazed by the service quality and professionalism exhibited by the RSAF personnel. They were clothed in long sleeved jumpsuits despite the sweltering heat and unbearable humidity. I can only imagine how uncomfortable they must be, but nobody uttered a word of complaint and they genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves, patiently explaining the various parts of the cockpit to visitors and even offering to take photographs for everyone.

I had fun playing with the controls, gears and pedals. Due to my lack of strength, I had to use both hands to move most of the gears, much to the amusement of the RSAF guy who told me that using one hand is the norm.

LOL I guess besides meeting the minimum height requirement of 1.6m, I don’t have what it takes to be a pilot!

Besides getting up close and personal with the fighter planes and helicopters, there are aerial displays, helicopter rides, arming demonstrations and games at the carnival! Tomorrow’s the last day of the open house, so you may want to drop Paya Lebar Air Base to take a look!

Prive & High Society Cafe

I was down with stomachache followed by cramps last weekend, but that didn’t stop me from feasting. Ironically, that was about the only thing I did besides catching Pirates of the Caribbean.

We had a long, leisurely breakfast at Prive, enjoying each other’s company and relishing the goodness of our breakfast staple – eggs. The eggs benedict here is one of my favourites.

For dinner, we headed down to High Society Cafe at Marina Bay Sands. High Society Cafe is a spin-off from The CD Shop and is marketed as a place for tea and cakes. Funnily enough, the cakes, though pricey, were not particularly tasty.

I found the main courses much better. If not for the meagre portions, I would probably rate the food 7/10. Save for the cafe’s lovely ambience, I think TCC and Coffee Club are much better choices in terms of affordability and food quality.

I lead a very sedentary lifestyle and watching TV has become such a huge part of my life that JW often jokes that it is only a matter of time before I leave a permanent dent in our sofa.

Getting me to participate in any form of sports other than running (even then, I have not run in years) is no mean feat. Hence, I really have to take my hat off to my friends who persuaded me to go to the bowling alley after our sumptuous Japanese dinner at Shin Kushiya.

It all started well for me and I even scored a few spares, but hunger pangs got the better of me in the middle of the game due to my high metabolic rate. Needless to say, the game went downhill from thereon. If you noticed from the collage above, Jun was the most competitive among us. She even brought a change of attire!

Local Food

Had my chicken rice fix at Wishbone Family Restaurant at Bukit Timah Plaza. It was nothing fantastic but local food always appeals to me.

I loved the dessert! A delightful mix of vanilla ice-cream and burbur hitam (black glutinous rice), it is very aptly named Black Pearl.

I didn’t take a full-length photo of my outfit this time, but if it helps at all, I was in a gingham dress that Karen gave me. 🙂

Beauty in Black vs Beauty in Colour Blocking

Beauty in Black is an exhibition of 18 black dresses from the 1950s to 2000s. Held at the National Museum, this exhibition showcases dresses by renowned designers such as Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin, Karl Lagerfeld and Azzedine Alaïa. The colour black is the highlight of this exhibition, as these 18 dresses take us on a journey through time to experience the colour black’s meteoric rise to iconic status.

My favourite dress in this collection is the guitar dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chloe (bottom left in collage). The ingenuity of the design lies in the creative sequin guitar motif behind, which ties in seamlessly with the halter neck design of the dress, giving the otherwise simple black dress a whimsical twist.

Now that Spring is here, together with rising temperatures on our sunny island, black may not be an ideal choice for the outdoors. Don’t get me wrong. I do like the elegance of black and how a well-cut little black dress instantly adds glamour, but sometimes, it doesn’t hurt to play around with colours. 😉

Lunch at Novus Cafe

I love visiting the museum, so you’ll see me there whenever there’s a new exhibition in town. I visited the museum again recently, and I will share more about my visit in my next post. Till then, this post will be dedicated to the lovely Novus Cafe at the National Museum.

Novus Cafe is another cafe that I adore, not only for its gorgeous interior decor reminiscent of the opulent baroque era, but also for its affordable and delectable main courses.

Memories at Old Ford Factory

After breakfast, we visited Memories at Old Ford Factory. The former Ford Factory was where British General Officer Officer Commanding Malaya (which Singapore was then a part of), Lt.-Gen. Arthur Ernest Percival, surrendered to the Japanese Commander of the 25th Army, Gen. Yamashita Tomoyuki on 15 February 1942.

That fateful day signaled the end of the British empire in Asia and the start of the Japanese occupation in Singapore, which lasted 3 years and 8 months. This was the darkest period for Singaporeans.

One of the atrocities committed by the Japanese was the Sook Ching massacre (also known as the purging of Chinese), where at least 70,000 Chinese were indiscriminately killed by the Japanese because they were thought to be anti-Japanese.

In this museum, there are several war artifacts, documents and oral accounts of Singaporeans who survived the war. It was heart-wrenching to listen to the individuals’ accounts on how their family members were killed, leaving them to fend for themselves at a tender age. Having just suffered the loss of a friend, I can imagine how traumatic it must have been for them. The courage, tenacity and resilience demonstrated by these individuals are nothing short of commendable.

The Japanese occupation has changed the outlook of Singaporeans forever, and the British empire’s weakness was what prompted us to have our own independent government. We have certainly come a long way, and I am very proud to be a Singaporean, especially after witnessing the watershed elections this year.

On a lighter note, I’ll be concluding this post with my outfit for the day.

Epicurious Cafe and Elections Afterthoughts

We popped by Epicurious Cafe at Railway Mall for breakfast after casting our votes yesterday. Despite the raves about their breakfast sets, I still prefer Graze at Rochester Park as it offers larger portions and a better ambiance at similar prices.

Speaking of the elections, I still can’t believe that George Yeo has been voted out, although historically, Aljunied GRC has been relatively more pro-opposition, hence the results are not entirely unexpected.

The general sentiment on Facebook is that George Yeo should replace TPL instead. Perhaps this would give the PAP an impetus to review the GRC system?

Whatever it is, this is a historic moment for all Singaporeans, and a huge blow to PAP. I know many friends are rejoicing at the results, but I can’t help but feel a sense of loss.

Regardless, I choose to believe that every cloud has a silver lining. This elections, for one, proved that Gen Y Singaporeans are not apathetic about politics, and that alone tells me that there is hope for the future of Singapore.
