Cafes in Rodellar

August 30, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
We haven’t been doing very much in Rodellar besides exploring around the small town and chilling out at cafes. The town has an old world charm reminiscent of years of yore, and every street is lined with pretty little pink flowers and wild berries.

Refugio Kalandraka is the name of the little lodge that we’re currently staying in. The owner here owns Cafe Kalandraka too, which is just a stone’s throw away and opens from 6.30pm till late. This is where we have been dining every evening. The salad and lasagna here are our favourite dishes. The generous servings of cheese are enough to make me drool! For breakfast, we will venture a little further to the heart of the town, where Bar Florentino and Olvido are. Both cafes here whip up hearty breakfast meals with delicious spanish eggs (essentially sunny side up eggs that are very crispy and fluffy at the edges) and sausages. It is summer in Spain now so the sun doesn’t set till about 9 p.m. Once the sun sets, we have to make our way back to our lodge using a headlamp because it’s so dark you can’t see anything in front of you! It is quite an experience really.

Besides chilling out, we did some canyoning and climbing today (not me, I was the belayer). More on that soon!

Spain (Rodellar) – Refugio Kalandraka

August 29, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments

We arrived at Rodellar yesterday after driving 300km. It was quite a harrowing experience as we were unfamiliar with the roads and made wrong turns around the one million roundabouts in Spain.

But when we finally turned into Rodellar, after maneuvering on the narrow mountain trails meant for 2-way traffic, we realised how gratifying it was to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Gorgeous architecture, stone houses and a picturesque view of the mountains were just some of the beautiful sights that took our breath away.

Here’s presenting our quaint little cottage, our home for the next two weeks. It looks like something that came out of Heidi. I can imagine sheep running about the large expanse of greenery, but in reality, there are countless numbers of huge dogs instead.

This is what I wake up to every morning, coupled with the fresh mountain air and invigorating cool breeze. I could get used to this except that there isn’t hot water for bathing at all!

Check out the Scandinavian decor of our little lodge. It is surprisingly homely and cozy.

The bed is super comfortable too and the weather is so cool, there is no need for any air-conditioning. I can spend practically the whole day just rolling in bed and doing absolutely nothing. LOL.

Have a great week ahead! I don’t know what I’ll be doing yet but I hope I don’t end up as a belay slave to JW. Haha!

Flying off soon

August 26, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
As you’re reading this, I’m rushing out to run all my last minute errands before my plane takes off tonight. I’ll be off to Rodellar, a rock-climbing destination in Spain (don’t ask me what I’m doing there) for 2 weeks before heading to Barcelona, Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Bratislava and finally, Budapest. Then, I’ll be back for a day before setting off to the US and HK to meet my lovely gfs.

The good news is, yes, I will still be updating my blog while I’m overseas, so do stay tuned for more updates. πŸ˜‰ I’m sorry I haven’t had time to reply the comments on my blog, but rest assured that I’ve read every single one of them. Before I turn into a rock in Rodellar, I aim to reply all the comments and keep you updated while I’m on the road.

To all my Singaporean readers who are voting at the presidential election this Saturday, do cast your vote wisely! πŸ˜‰ For once, I don’t have a clear idea of which candidate I would vote for.

Ah well, let’s not go into that now shall we. Have a good weekend!

Wisdom Tooth Surgery

August 24, 2011 by Regina Chow 6 Comments
I removed two wisdom teeth at one go last Monday, namely the upper left one by extraction and the lower left one by surgery. Sounds excruciating? I thought so too, but surprisingly, it was a breeze and hopefully, this post will help those of you who are afraid of dentists to overcome your fear. πŸ˜‰

My uncle (who’s a fabulous dentist too, but he doesn’t perform surgeries as frequently) recommended Dr Bruce Chew to me because he’s an oral surgeon. It’s important to find a good dentist to perform wisdom tooth surgery because a blotched job can impair your facial nerves, resulting in permanent facial numbness. I was quite perturbed by the thought of this, hence I prolonged my appointment till just 2 weeks before my back-to-back trips so that I have just enough time for recovery. πŸ˜›

What was the process like?

Dr Chew did a fantastic job. Before the deed was done, I was given antibiotics and painkillers. He then proceeded to administer local anesthesia through injection until my entire mouth was numb.

Not once did I feel pain (my threshold is very low) during the whole process, including the injection. My upper tooth was extracted in the blink of an eye. I almost didn’t realize it was already taken out.

The lower tooth, on the other hand, took slightly longer because it was necessary to break the tooth into smaller pieces. The drilling sound was deafening. I am not kidding when I say deafening because for someone who has had a lot of dental work done, this is the first time I’ve experienced drilling of this magnitude. There was also some pulling and tugging but both Dr Chew and his nurse, Doris, were very reassuring. Again, I have to emphasize that there was no pain throughout and the procedure was completed in about 30-45 minutes.

Extraction/surgery aftercare

I was given a course of antibiotics, painkillers and an antibacterial mouthwash to prevent infection and speed up the healing process. You will also be given 5 days of medical leave to recuperate at home.

For the first day itself, do prepared for bleeding to last at least a couple of hours. It can be a gory sight, having to change your blood-soaked gauze every half an hour or so. I was told to only use the mouthwash before bedtime, after brushing, so as to give the blood ample time to clot. This is important because the nurse warned that some patients who turned a deaf ear to her advice suffered from excessive bleeding thereafter.

My lower facial nerve was exposed after the surgery because of my tooth’s proximity to the nerve, which meant that there was a possibility that I would experience numbness for a few months. Dr Chew advised me to take Vitamin B should I experience numbness in my lips the next day, but thankfully, there was no numbness to speak of. πŸ˜‰

Did I experience pain in the days that followed?

I was half-expecting to feel excruciating pain after that, so I took my painkillers with the antibiotics 3 times a day for the next 5 days. As a result, the experience was completely painless for me.

There was some soreness around the jaw and gum area and it was difficult for me to open my mouth too wide, but honestly, these inconveniences were pretty inconsequential. I could eat as per normal, except that I chose to stick to a liquid diet (e.g. porridge, soup etc.) for about 4 days so that brushing will be much easier.

My only grouse was that my left cheek swelled for 4 days, making me look like a chipmunk with walnuts stored in the left side of my mouth. JW had the time of his life teasing me and poking fun at my left cheek (yes, literally). He was so fascinated with my swollen cheek that he kept asking me when I was going to extract the wisdom teeth on my right! =S

What about now?

Nope, there is still no pain. After my stitches were removed on the 5th day, I was given a syringe and taught how to dislodge food when it gets stuck in the gap where my tooth used to be. I’m currently using the syringe to flush out trapped food after every meal. My jaw and gum still feel slightly sore as the wound will only heal completely after 3 months, but the soreness is subsiding with each passing day and I have been so busy it doesn’t bother me at all!

What’re your dentist’s contact details?

Chew & Chew Dental Surgery

Mount Elizabeth Hospital

#10-16

Tel: 6738 6033

What’s the cost like?

For wisdom tooth surgery, the cost ranges from S$1000-S$1,500, of which a maximum amount of $950 can be claimed from Medisave.

For wisdom tooth extraction, it was about S$200. Unfortunately, Medisave cannot be used for normal extraction. πŸ™

Liz Lisa Wedges

August 22, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments

I was looking for a pair of simple wedges but I didn’t want to compromise on either design or versatility. I was attracted to this pretty scallop design Liz Lisa wedges the moment I set my eyes on it. Fans of Japanese fashion magazines such as Vivi would know that Liz Lisa is a popular Japanese gyaru brand. If you love floral prints, tulle and lace (like me), Liz Lisa is the perfect shop for you!

What I like about this pair of wedges is that the flowers are detachable, so you can choose to remove them if your outfit is too complicated or attach them to spruce up an otherwise plain ensemble.

Just when I thought that was all, I was caught by surprise when I saw the gorgeous cute lace-up corset design at the back of the shoes.

I’ve also brought in a pair Liz Lisa inspired slip-on wedges for sale, specially for my lovely readers.

Besides statement jewellery, every girl needs a pair of statement shoes to complete her wardrobe.

To ensure exclusivity, I only have one pair in size 36 (fits true). It is brand new and unworn. πŸ™‚

Price: S$30.00 – SOLD-

Measurements: Length 23.5 cm, Height 9cm

If you’re interested in purchasing this pair of shoes, do drop me an e-mail at regina.chow@gmail.com to order.

Please note that a meet-up is preferred for this item as I will be heading overseas very soon! I am available this Tuesday (23rd Aug) and Wednesday (24th Aug) in town area. πŸ˜‰

Do photos reflect your mood?

August 21, 2011 by Regina Chow 6 Comments
Ruffle Cotton Top from MDScollections

I wore one of my favourite tulle skirts to lunch today and I could barely open my eyes for a photo under the blazing afternoon sun!

Coincidentally, the mood of this photo seems to reflect the rough week that I had due to some personal issues which I will not disclose here. All I can say is, I’ve finally understood the real meaning of the adage “true friends are only found in times of adversity”.

Perhaps everyone had different expectations, so perhaps nobody’s to blame for the situation. But I’m disappointed because of the way we were trampled on despite all that we have done, and while we all wish things could have been different, what is done is done and now it’s time for us to move on, come what may. Our worries and actions may have come to naught, but I always believe that every cloud has a silver lining. I believe tomorrow will always be a brand new day and that it’ll always be better than yesterday. πŸ™‚

Without forgiveness, life is governed by an endless cycle of resentment and retaliation. ~Roberto Assagioli

We are willing to forgive, but will the level of trust ever be the same again? I really don’t have the answer to that. Only time will tell.

Whatever happens, we will only wish the best for you, as always.

T Forty Two in KL

August 20, 2011 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
T Forty Two is a cozy cafe located at Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur (KL). The cafe is decorated in the style of a boutique hotel, with dark paneled walls, plush Victorian-chairs and dazzling chandeliers.

We met Karen, her mum and Ethan for tea as they happened to be in KL during the same period as us. πŸ˜‰ While JW’s primary objective was to hone his rockclimbing skills in KL, my main aim was to gorge myself silly before my wisdom tooth operation.

The high tea set for two came in a traditional 3-tier stand (love it!!) comprising a wide array of desserts, sandwiches and scones. Have a sweet tooth but can’t bear to forgo savoury food? Over at T Forty Two, you can have your cake and eat it (literally!) as there is a good balance of both sweet and savoury treats to satisfy your cravings and please every customer’s palate.

Food aside, I especially like their tea sets as the whimsical design reminds me of the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Alice in Wonderland.

The teapot is so adorable. It evokes feelings of nostalgia as it bears a striking resemblance to the teapot which was part of a toy tea set that I used to play with when I was a kid.

I once scooped up water from the toilet bowl with my toy teapot (because I couldn’t reach the basin due to my height, or lack thereof) and offered to make tea for my mum, thinking that the water was actually drinkable. I lived to regret this because to this day, my mum continues to tease me about it!

Ah well, I digress. With a cup of tea in one hand and a macaroon in another, bask in the cafe’s relaxing atmosphere and indulge in long, leisurely conversations while savouring the goodness of afternoon tea treats. T Forty Two is one cafe that you can certainly consider for your next tΓͺte-Γ -tΓͺte in KL.

Statement Jewellery

August 17, 2011 by Regina Chow 13 Comments
I bagged some statement jewellery during my weekend stay in KL, which was quite unlike me because I’ve never really been a huge fan of accessories. I find it a hassle having to match them with different outfits.

Well, that was until recently at least. I started including more plain, minimalist pieces in my wardrobe and thought it would be interesting to jazz them up with jewellery. That way, I’ll get different looks without having to do a wardrobe overhaul.

I love this beautiful statement necklace. It is an instant conversation starter and the soft pink hue makes it the perfect accessory for plain pastel tops and dresses.

Besides the necklace, I also came across this lovely ring encrusted with pearls and roses. It was love at first sight and even my other half gave his stamp of approval. I don’t usually bother about men’s opinions on fashion but sometimes, a little affirmation helps. πŸ˜‰

An Affair with Floral Prints & Ruffles

August 16, 2011 by Regina Chow 7 Comments
Pink puffed sleeve top from Korea

Floral print skorts from Platinum Mall, Bangkok

Pink skinny belt from Cache Cache

Diamonte butterfly flats from Mitju

To cheer myself up for my dental visit yesterday afternoon, I decided to put together an outfit with some of my favourite details such as floral print, ruffles, the colour pink and diamontes. This photo above was taken right after my wisdom tooth surgery so if you look closely, you’ll probably notice that my left cheek is a little swollen. I look like a chipmunk with a huge fishball stuck in my mouth.

I had two of my wisdom teeth extracted yesterday (normal extraction for the upper tooth and surgery for the bottom tooth) and to my surprise, the experience was completely painless. I’m not sure if the pain will only strike in a day or even a few days’ time but I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that this ordeal will be over in a jiffy.

I’ll write about my experience in another day or two so that I can give a more accurate account, so stay tuned if you’re interested to find out more. πŸ™‚

What I’m Wearing Today (WIWT)

August 12, 2011 by Regina Chow 10 Comments
WIWT stands for What I’m Wearing Today and I have tagged most of my outfit posts so everyone can just click on the “wiwt” label at my sidebar to view my outfits. πŸ™‚

This is what I look like after a movie, dinner, shopping, and drinks. Thank goodness I had my lace edge high socks from ClubCouture to keep me warm in the cinema.

Lace Edge High Socks from ClubCouture

Black ballet pumps from Tangs

This is totally random but I just made an appointment for my wisdom tooth surgery this coming Monday. I don’t have the jitters yet but I’m pretty sure I’ll freak out on the dentist chair. πŸ™ I’d better stuff myself silly in KL this weekend to prevent any weight loss thereafter!
