Where to Eat Authentic Malaysian Cuisine in Kuala Lumpur (KL)

October 17, 2016 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

Most of us Singaporeans are familiar with Kuala Lumpur (KL), but do you know where to go for authentic Malaysian cuisine besides Jalan Alor? The rule of thumb is always to ask for recommendations from the locals, so before I popped by a few weekends ago, I spoke to my Malaysian friend. One of the restaurants that she recommended was Restoran Rebung by internationally renowned Dato’ Chef Ismail.

Lady luck must have been shining on me because the lovely team from Gaya Travel and Ministry of Tourism & Culture Malaysia already had it all planned!

  1. Restoran Rebung

We were personally greeted by the affable Dato’ Chef Ismail who gave us a thorough explanation of all the dishes we had to try (and also gamely posed for the camera with a huge pot of dodol!). You can choose between the ala carte menu or the buffet, but if you want a taste of authentic Malay cuisine in its full glory, I would highly recommend the buffet.

As a Singaporean, most of us are no stranger to delicious Malay food, but believe me, dining at Restoran Rebung is an eye-opening experience, and a very memorable one at that.

We were spoilt for choice with the endless selection of savoury curries and delicacies such as nasi lemak, assam laksa and roti jala. Plus, who could forget the wonderful dessert spread that ended our meal on a sweet note? At a pocket-friendly price of just RM75++ per pax, you can eat to your heart’s delight without worrying about bursting your budget (well, do beware of bursting seams though).

Restoran Rebung

Address:

5-2, Aras 5, Parkir Bertingkat Bukit Aman

No. 1 Jalan Tanglin

Taman Botani Perdana

50480 Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours:

Mon – Sun 7am – 10pm

2. Coliseum Cafe & Grill Room

Take a walk down memory lane at Coliseum Cafe & Grill Room, a restaurant that has been serving colonial heritage Hainanese cuisine since 1921. Much of Coliseum’s interior remains reminiscent of the colonial days and evokes a nostalgic feel. Coliseum Cafe and the beautiful building that it is housed in are gems, especially in this day and age when old buildings are torn down at lightning speed to make way for new ones.

When it comes to Hainanese cuisine, Hainanese pork chop is one dish that you can’t miss out on. All it took was one bite into the crispy crust that enveloped the succulent meat within for me to fall in love with Coliseum’s version of Hainanese pork chop. Popular among both Malaysians and tourists alike, Coliseum is a must-visit for those of us who fancy comfort food, photography enthusiasts and history buffs.

3. Street Food at Jalan Masjid Night Market

I don’t know about you, but I love night markets (also known as pasar malams) in Malaysia, especially in KL. I visited the pasar malam along Jalan Masjid recently as part of the KL Heritage Night Walk. The street food is amazing, you get to savour old school snacks and the stalls open till late.

I was completely bowled over by the delicious pancakes that were pan-fried to perfection. It left a lasting impression as I haven’t had anything quite like this in Singapore. Now you know where to head to the next time your stomach growls way past dinner time!

Have you tried these places? If there’re any other food haunts that you would recommend, leave a comment or drop me an e-mail!

Jiang-Nan Chun: Most Indulgent Peking Duck Experience in Singapore

May 26, 2016 by Regina Chow No Comments

Dreaming of crispy Peking Duck skin that crackles like a thin slice of caramel in your mouth?

Or a slice of tender and succulent duck meat that boasts an aromatic smoky flavour?
How
about completing your gastronomic experience with a generous dollop of
caviar that brings out all the flavours of the Peking Duck beautifully?
If
this sounds enticing to you, the newly revitalised award-winning
fine-dining restaurant Jiang-Nan Chun at Four Seasons Hotel Singapore is
where you should be heading to for the most indulgent Peking Duck
experience in Singapore.

Jiang-Nan Chun, Four Seasons Hotel Singapore

Fine
traditional wood carvings contrast with rough fishermen baskets – a
manifestation of Jiang Nan, located south of the Yangtze River

Traditional medical cabinets serve as decorative backdrops
Traditional chopstick holders are incorporated into the exquisite design of the reception counter

What’s special about the Peking duck?

Caviar aside, here’s essentially what differentiates the roast duck here from its counterparts.

Fresh
ducks undergo special preparation methods for 14 hours before they are
roasted in a mesquite wood oven, which not only imparts succulence to
the meat, but also ensures that the fat beneath the glossy crispy skin
is greatly reduced.

I
was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Peking duck when it was
swiftly wheeled out by the Chef, making a dramatic entrance in the
dining hall. Watching

the chef wield his magic and carve the duck in front of guests was a
feast for the eyes.

Chef carving the beautiful glossy Peking duck

The crispy duck skin was the first to be served,
followed by slices of succulent duck meat. I
usually find Peking duck skin a little too oily and the meat, when
taken alone without any sauce, too dry for my liking, but I soon discovered that Jiang
Nan-Chun’s Peking duck is truly in a league of its own.

Crispy skin that crackles in your mouth like caramel

I
thoroughly enjoyed the crackling crispy skin without the extra layer of
fats, which is perfect for even the most health-conscious patron, and
as I sank my teeth into a slice of duck meat, I was immediately greeted
by the wonderful aroma and an explosion of intense flavours.

It was only then that a wave of realization hit me – I have yet to even pair it with the condiments that accompanied this dish.

In
line with Jiang Nan-Chun’s new concept of “享乐主义”, or “the principle of
enjoyment and happiness” which promotes the idea that how you eat, and
why you eat, is just as important as what you eat, the various eating
methods of “Peking” versus “Cantonese” roast duck are explained when the
condiments and pancakes are served.

Caviar
is the main highlight of the condiments and surprisingly, it
complements the traditional flavours of the Peking duck perfectly,
lending the finishing touches to an unforgettable experience.

Highlight of the condiments – Caviar

Words
fail to describe how impressed I was as I have never tasted Peking duck
that has approached this level of sophistication.

But that’s not all
that Jiang-Nan Chun has to offer.

Beyond just duck, some of its
signature dim sum and claypot dishes are prepared in the
specially-customized duck oven to greatly enhance the depth of flavours.

Dim Sum

Crispy
Flaky Pastry with Black Pepper Beef, Steamed Shrimp Dumpling with
Mushroom, Char Siew Sliders with Homemade Pickled Green Chilli

Can
you see the beautiful layers on the Crispy Flaky Pastry with Black
Pepper Meat? There is a total of seventeen symmetrical layers alternated
between water-based and oil-based skin, forming a crispy textured
pastry that envelopes the wood-fired black pepper meat within.

It
takes many hours to make this and the chefs’ hard work certainly pays
off. Just take a bite and let the light, flaky layers melt in your
mouth, revealing the juicy black pepper meat.

I felt like I went to dim sum heaven.

Crispy Flaky Pastry with Black Pepper Beef

The
Char Siew Sliders with Green Pickled Chilli is yet another work of art
that showcases the chefs’ attention to the finest details.

Only
Kurobuta pork, the most highly prized pork in Japan, is used to create
its signature Char Siew. The juiciness, tenderness and distinctive
flavour set it apart from the usual char siew, and that tangy sweetness
of green pickled chilli gives it that extra punch.

Char Siew Sliders with Pickled Green Chilli

Now,
how could I forget the steamed shrimp dumpling, a dim sum mainstay?
Jiang-Nan Chun’s version is clearly a notch above the rest as it comes
with thin, silky smooth skin and generous portions of large succulent
shrimps.

Steamed Shrimp Dumplings with Mushroom

 Appetizer

What
I love about Jiang Nan-Chun is how innovative the dishes are. Take this
appetizer for example. The soft shell prawns are fried to perfection
(they’re so crispy you can actually eat them whole!) with curry leaves
and spices based on the chef’s secret recipe. The almonds and crispy
rice added that extra crunch which made this dish highly addictive.

Soft Shell Prawns with Sliced Almonds & Crispy Rice

Double-boiled Soups

Sea Whelk, Maka (Peruvian Ginseng), Dried Scallops & Pork Ribs

Jiang-Nan Chun’s double-boiled soups are well-loved by VIPs and dignitaries alike, and it is not hard to see why.

To
create a rich stock, the base of the soup is boiled for eight hours
with fresh, natural ingredients. Then, key ingredients are added to the
stock and boiled again for another eight hours. This process ensures that
you reap the wellness benefits of their nourishing soups, which have a
rich, complex flavour yet remain incredibly light on the tastebuds.

Double-boiled soups are my idea of comfort food and needless to say, I finished my bowl of hearty soup in a heartbeat.

Claypots

Wagyu
Beef Oxtail with Lemongrass-infused Oil

The
Wagyu Beef Oxtail with Lemongrass-infused Oil is a new signature dish
at Jiang-Nan Chun. Cooked for over 30 hours in the mesquite wood oven,
the meat is so tender it melts in your mouth. It is exceptionally
flavourful and goes very well with a bowl of fragrant white rice.

At
Jiang-Nan Chun, even the tiniest of details is not spared and you’ll be
happy to know that every bowl of rice is individually steamed, so that
every grain is moist and soft.

Main Dishes

Steamed Cod Wrapped in Paper Rice Roll

When
I first read that the next dish to be served was Steamed Cod Wrapped in
Paper Rice Roll, I wasn’t expecting it to turn up looking like a
beautiful art piece with an equally enthralling story behind it.

Can you tell that this dish evokes silk in the water ripples? This
dish tells the story of one of the Four Beauties of China, Xi Shi.
According to the legend, she used to wash her silks in the famous West
Lake in Hangzhou and her gorgeous reflection stunned even the fishes, so
they swam lower below the waters.

I
enjoyed this wellness dish with cod, mushrooms and water chestnuts,
accompanied by a touch of truffle personally shaved by the chef for
every guest.

 Dessert

Desserts are less traditional and like every item on the menu, each brings an element of surprise to the table.

Crispy Salted Egg Yolk Puff Pastry

Fans
of salted egg yolk can get your fix here with the Crispy Salted Egg
Yolk Puff Pastry with Almond. I was particularly enamoured with this as a
refreshing and creative spin is given to the salted egg yolk craze by
incorporating almond cream in this delightful crispy puff pastry.

Avocado cream, coconut sorbet, osmanthus jelly and cocoa nibs

Those
of you who are a little more health-conscious can opt for the Avocado
cream dessert which is lighter on the palate yet equally tasty.

Yogurt Cream, Mung Beans, Longan, Chia Seed, Sour Plum Granite

If
you are feeling more adventurous, opt for the Yogurt Cream dessert. The
juxtaposition of yogurt cream and sour plum granite, topped with a
sprinkling of Chia Seeds, gives it a unique east-meets-west twist.

Tea Pairing & Wine Pairing

In
line with the concept of 享乐, you can always look to the servers for
recommendations on a cup of tea or a glass of wine to complement every
dish and to complete your dining experience.

Tea Pairing

From now till 30 June 2016, call 6831 7220 and quote “25% off Peking Duck” when making a reservation to enjoy 25% off the Signature Peking Duck (U.P. S$98).

Travel: Street Food in Copenhagen

January 22, 2016 by Regina Chow No Comments

When it comes to food in Copenhagen, I have to admit that traditional Danish delicacies such as herring can be an acquired taste, but the street food and pastries are definitely among the best in their league.

Aside from the famous 2-Michelin star restaurant Noma (impossible to get a reservation unless you book early), here are 3 interesting places for good food and pastries that I would personally recommend.

Papiroen Street Food (Paper Island)

Indulge
in street food, people watch and soak up the sun outdoors with a group
of friends at Papiroen (Paper Island) along Copenhagen Harbour. Why is it called Paper Island? The building once served as paper storage for the Procurement Association of the Danish Press, but the raw halls have since been transformed into a place where colourful trucks and vans serve up a dazzling array of street food from all over the world. These street food vendors are temporary occupants whose lease will be up in end 2017, so do visit Paper Island while you still can!

Cinnamon Buns at St Peders Cafe (Sankt Peders Bageri)

St Peders Bageri/ St Peders Cafe

Delicious pastries at the oldest bakery in Copenhagen
I have never been a fan of pastries, but St Peders Cafe changed my mind for good. Cinnamon rolls are the highlight of Copenhagen’s oldest bakery (founded in 1652) and you instantly know why when you sink your teeth into its fluffy goodness.
Having cinnamon roll at 730am (totally worth waking up for!)
Words fail to describe how incredible it is to have a piping hot crispy cinnamon bun on a cold morning.
Piping hot cinnamon rolls, all ready to fly off the shelves!

Royal Smushi Cafe

Royal Smushi Cafe

Royal Smushi Cafe is a popular spot in town (even Oprah has visited this cafe!) known for its reinterpretation of the Smorrebord, an all-time Danish staple. Smorrebord is essentially an open-faced sandwich, typically with rye bread as a base and loaded with toppings like herring and the works.

Bite-sized Smorrebord, also known as Smushi

Royal Smushi created its own version of beautifully crafted bite-sized Smorrebord, lovingly termed Smushi. You can pop a few of these delectable goodies into your mouth and try all the different flavours without feeling overstuffed. I love the guilt-free experience. Oh, and did I mention that the cafe itself is just as captivating? It is hard not to fall in love with the whimsical decor and those Arne Jacobsen Ant chairs!

Florida's Natural Juices (Giveaway Winners)

May 17, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
I have always been a loyal fan of Florida’s Natural juices and my favourite is their Orange Juice with Most Pulp (Product of USA). Squeezed from Valencia oranges and not from concentrate, it is the next best alternative to having freshly squeezed juice.
Nothing else comes close, and naturally, I couldn’t conceal my excitement when I had the opportunity to be a part of their latest campaign, where I got to find out more about Florida’s Natural range of juices and their multiple uses through 3 challenges (hidden within the envelopes labelled A, B and C in the photo below) that were posed to me.
If you follow me on my Facebook page here, you may already have participated in my recent Florida’s Natural Juices Giveaway where the winner will receive 1-month’s supply of juices from Florida’s Natural. I asked you to choose the sequence in which I should open the envelopes which would determine the order of the challenges that I take up.
Which sequence did I pick in the end?
Who is the winner of this giveaway?
Sorry for keeping you in suspense for so long!  The winner of the giveaway will be revealed at the end of this post, but meanwhile, read on to find out more about each challenge.
Challenge B: Cooking (Orange-Sesame Noodles with Grilled Shrimp)

I started with Challenge B, a cooking challenge using Florida’s Natural Orange Juice.

Yes, that’s right. Orange Juice.

Before you start frowning at the idea, I have to tell you that I have tried using freshly squeezed orange juice to marinate shrimps previously. However, this was my first time using Florida’s Natural Orange Juice or any juice straight out of a carton for that matter as a sauce for soba noodles and I wasn’t so sure if it would taste good.
Here’s the recipe if you’re interested in recreating this dish:
Ingredients
1/4 cup fresh orange juice (I used the Most Pulp version)
3 tablespoons tamari
3 tablespoons peanut butter (I used organic unsalted peanut butter, but I think the sinful version would taste better)
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
2 teaspoons grated orange zest
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
10 ounce soba noodles
1 cup snow peas
1 carrot, cut into matchsticks (I used baby carrots as they’re sweeter and there’s no need to cut them up)
1.5 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined (I used ready cooked frozen shrimp for convenience)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
Preparation
1. Combine first 7 ingredients in a large bowl to make orange juice sauce.
2. Boil noodles according to package directions. Before draining, add snow peas and carrots to cook for 30 seconds.
3. Drain pasta, peas and carrots and toss immediately with orange juice sauce. Set aside.
4. Brush shrimp with sesame oil and grill over medium-hot stove for 3-5 minutes
5. Arrange pasta on serving plate, topped with shrimps.
And here’s presenting my final dish! I was surprised that it actually tasted better than expected. It had a pleasant nutty taste accompanied by a refreshing citrus flavour. I used organic unsalted peanut butter but I have a gut feel that this would taste better with the more sinful version.

Challenge C: Flatlay (What’s on my table?)

My next pick was Challenge C, which also turned out to be the easiest challenge for me as I love flatlays. I did a flatlay of my favourite beauty products, accessories (the lovely people who packed my challenge chose this gorgeous floral wreath and floral ring for me), and not forgetting Florida’s Natural Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice.

Since we are on the topic of beauty, did you know that grapefruit juice promotes a healthy complexion and helps with weight loss too? It gives you more energy at the same time and decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease too.

Now, I’m sure this gives you ample reasons to start consuming grapefruit juice! I have just started taking grapefruit juice during breakfast every morning so I always have a carton of Florida’s Natural Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice in my fridge. You should try it too!

If you prefer something a little sweeter, you could give Florida’s Natural Cranberry Ruby Red Juice a try. Cranberry juice acts as a sweetener and promotes urinary tract health too, which is perfect for us ladies.

Challenge A: Upcycling (Juice Carton Desk Organiser)

I wished the challenges were as easy as ABC (in that order), but the truth was, I was stumped by Challenge A. I was tasked to upcycle an empty carton of juice and in a nutshell, what this means is I had to make a useful product out of waste materials. I have to say it is a very meaningful task, but handicraft is definitely not one of my strengths.
Thankfully, with the help of my brother who loves art and craft, we managed to convert the juice carton into a desk organizer to store my girly stationery. As frivolous as my pens may look, don’t you agree that they’re so adorable? Looking at them brightens up my day instantly.

If you’re interested in making your own desk organiser, follow the instructions below:
What you need
 Empty juice carton
Craft knife
Hole punch
Preparation
1. Thoroughly wash and dry the interior and exterior of the juice carton. Use your craft knife to cut out an entire flap on the side of the carton.
2. Use your hole punch to punch several holes all over the flap that you cut out. Note that you have to use a hole punch that is able to create larger holes. The usual puncher does not work as well, so I used this hole punch that I purchased from Art Friend instead:
3. Use blu tack to stick the reverse side of the flap back onto the side of the carton.
Here’s a close-up of the final product:
I had a lot of fun with these creative challenges and I certainly hope this post has given you a better idea of what you can do with your Florida’s Natural juices.
And now’s the time for the big reveal.
Did you guess the sequence of my challenges correctly?
For those of you who guessed BCA, you could very well be my giveaway winner!

Giveaway Winner Announcement
There are two winners for this giveaway and they will each walk away with 1-month worth of Florida’s Natural Juices.

The winners are:
1) Serene Tay

2) Tan Bee Leng

Please drop me an email at regina.chow@gmail.com. Florida’s Natural will get in touch with you directly to make the necessary arrangements.

Thank you once again for participating in this giveaway. I took a while to sieve through all the comments as there were more than 100 responses!
Missed this giveaway? I’ll be holding giveaways regularly, so do follow me on Facebook here for more updates!

Four Seasons Hotel: One-Ninety Wood-fired Steaks and Seafood Buffet

May 7, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Buffets are usually known for quantity instead of quality, but in this day and age, discerning consumers value both qualities equally and Four Seasons Hotel’s One-Ninety Wood-fired Steaks and Seafood is one of the few places in Singapore that lets you have your cake and eat it.

I first had a taste of their Mezze Dinner Buffet (S$58++ including appetizer and dessert buffet spreads and one main course) earlier this year and I enjoyed it so much that I had to take JW there on a separate occasion.

Appetizer & Dessert Buffet

What I love about the appetizer and dessert buffet is that the extensive selection caters to all your whims and fancies. There is also an element of surprise as items are refreshed daily based on the freshest catch and produce, so you can expect nothing but the very best culinary offerings ranging from organic salads, cured meat, cheese, succulent seafood and exquisite desserts that promise to tantalize your taste buds.

I was blown away by the wide variety of seafood and organic vegetables. The prawns were very fresh and came with a hint of sweetness while the sweet cherry tomatoes oozed juicy goodness with every bite.

If you have a sweet tooth, you will be in for a treat at the dessert buffet which boasts a delectable array of cakes, bread and butter pudding (my personal favourite!), cookies and fresh fruits.

Main Courses

The main course menu features a sumptuous spread of cuisine wood-fired over the sweet aroma of apple wood.
Here’s what you can expect:
  • 120-day Grain-fed Steak Onglet
  • Sustainable Ahi Tuna Steak
  • Free-range Cajun-spiced Spring Chicken
  • Mediterranean Sea Bass Fillet
  • Grilled Ocean King Prawns and Calamari
  • Slow-roasted Japanese Pumpkin
  • Red Label Organic Salmon (add S$10)
  • Ranger Valley Wagyu 400-day Grain-fed Australian Rump (add S$10)
  • Black Angus Prime 200-day Grain-fed Beef Tenderloin (add S$32)
  • Baby Lamb Chops (add S$32)
If you are a meat lover, I would highly recommend the steaks here.I tried both the Wagyu Rump and Black Angus Prime on my first visit and I have to say they were well worth the top-up and calories. The Black Angus Prime was more tender, but both were equally succulent and tasty, with a delightful tinge of wood-fired flavour.

Black Angus Prime 200-Day Grain-Fed Beef Tenderloin

Good steaks are
hard to come by in Singapore, and given that JW is a huge fan of steak, I
insisted that he came along on my second visit. He too agreed that this was one of the best steaks he has tasted in Singapore.
On my second visit, I ordered the Grilled Ocean King Prawns and Calamari for my main course. I love seafood, and this dish has all the makings of the perfect dinner for a seafood lover. The King Prawns and calamari were very fresh and juicy, and the overall taste was enhanced with a slight hint of wood-fired flavour.

Some of the other ala-carte items that you have to try include the very fragrant truffle foccocia which was previously only reserved for VIPs.
Before the start of the meal, pamper yourself with Four Seasons Hotel Singapore’s signature Singapore Sangria, a cocktail that infuses flavours from Asian fruits such as dragonfruit, starfruit and lychee liquer. This delicious concoction was exclusively created for Four Seasons Hotel Singapore by Javier de las Muelas and can only be found on our sunny island. You could also pop by on Fridays for Happy Hour between 6-8pm and enjoy 1-for-1 on cocktails of your choice.
Aside from the delectable food and drinks, I truly appreciate the cozy and intimate ambience at One-Ninety, where you can catch glimpses of Executive Chef Giovanni Speciale, Senior Sous Chef Nicolas Owen and the team working their culinary magic as you just sit back, relax and indulge in the freshest and finest gastronomical fare. Definitely what I would consider as one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Royal Bird’s Nest & 5 Facts about Bird’s Nest

April 6, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, bird’s nest is your skin’s best friend. All you need to
do is to take a look at the porcelain skin of those who swear by bird’s
nest and have been consuming it religiously since young.
The boss of Royal Bird’s Nest, a bird’s nest specialty shop based in People’s Park Centre in Chinatown, is one such example. He has been taking bird’s nest everyday since he was a little boy. If you were to see him in person, you would certainly be in awe of his smooth, radiant and absolutely pore-less skin.
What are the benefits of consuming bird’s nest?
Traditionally
prepared as a soup, bird’s nest is rich in organic nutrients such as soluble glycoprotein, amino acids and minerals. Bird’s nest also contains “Cell Division Inducing Hormone” and an “Epithelial Growth Factor” that stimulate the growth and division of cells to enhance tissue growth, cellular regeneration and cell-mediated immunity in human beings.
If you consume bird’s nest regularly, you can be assured of fairer, younger and more radiant skin. It also strengthens your lungs, clears phlegm, and enhances your body’s immunity.
Did you know that consumption of bird’s nest during pregnancy also boosts your baby’s immune system? It also shortens your recovery time after giving birth.
I personally enjoy bird’s nest as a tonic from time to time as it is truly delicious in comparison to most traditional Chinese medicine concoctions. However, I could never quite figure out why there are so many varieties of bird’s nest in the market.
How do you tell if a particular type of bird’s nest is superior or inferior in quality?
Besides sharing more about Royal Bird’s Nest, I will also be highlighting 5 lesser known facts about bird’s nest that would give you tips on selecting and cooking bird’s nest to reap its optimal health benefits. Royal Bird’s Nest has also kindly extended exclusive discounts to all my lovely readers, so do read on till the end of this post to find out more.

Background of Royal Bird’s Nest
Royal Bird’s Nest specializes in 100% genuine bird’s nest without harmful chemicals, artificial colouring or preservatives.
No bleaching agents are used in the process of cleaning. To ensure that its bird’s nest is safe for consumption, Royal Bird’s Nest developed a state-of-the-art cleaning technology that uses tiny bubbles in water to release explosive energy. This energy, coupled with reactive oxygen, exterminates pollutants such as E.Coli, Fungi, Nitrate and Nitrite in bird’s nest without compromising its nutritional value.
Quality is assured as Royal Bird’s Nest oversees the entire value chain process in-house, beginning with harvesting, followed by cleaning, quality control and ending with packaging.
Royal Bird’s Nest believes in bringing bird’s nest to the masses by selling them at wholesale prices. Besides premium bird’s nest packed in transparent boxes which are perfect as gifts or even for personal consumption, it also serves pocket-friendly freshly brewed bird’s nest soup in four different flavours.
Too busy to brew a bowl of bird’s nest at home? Now, you can pop by Royal Bird’s Nest for a quick fix!
We were treated to the Rock Sugar, Ginseng and Osmanthus varieties. Priced at just S$12 a bowl, each flavour came along with its own distinctive taste to cater to varying preferences.
Karen and I generally have a soft spot for bird’s nest with rock sugar, hence that was our personal favourite at Royal Bird’s Nest.
For a more concentrated concoction, order their premium bird’s nest soup, priced at S$68. If you are too busy to drop by the shop, you can make arrangements to have your bird’s nest soup delivered right to your doorstep one day in advance. How very convenient!
Meant to be shared among 2-3 pax, the premium bird’s nest soup packs a punch as every spoonful delivers generous portions of nourishing bird’s nest. While it is best to consume bird’s nest when it is freshly brewed, you can still enjoy this bowl of bird’s nest goodness 5-6 days down the road as long as it is stored in the refrigerator.

As we indulged in servings after servings of delectable bird’s nest soup, questions about how to go about choosing and cooking the best bird’s nest for consumption began to fill our minds.
We had a very informative Q&A session with the boss of Royal Bird’s Nest, who patiently answered each and every question as candidly as he could to satisfy our curiosity. He took our breaths away with his candour as he debunked several myths about bird’s nest and shared invaluable insights with us, no holds barred.
I thought it would be useful to share these nuggets of information with you, so I have compiled 5 facts about bird’s nest that you probably never knew!
FACT #1:
Blood Bird’s Nest is NOT superior in quality

Blood Bird’s Nest, commonly known as 血燕 sports a reddish brown hue (far left in photo below) and is known to be a delicacy that is rich in nutrition as it is said to be produced by mother birds who rebuilt the nests many times till their saliva becomes blood. Contrary to popular belief, the reddish brown colour is typically due to the accumulation of swallow faeces, which does not translate to higher nutritional value.
(L-R) Fake Blood Bird’s Nest, Cave Bird’s Nest and House Bird’s Nest
In many cases, swallow breeders have also resorted to dyeing the bird’s nest or adding nitrites to create blood bird’s nest. Due to the potential health threats posed, the sale of blood bird’s nest has already been banned in China.
FACT #2:
There is NO difference in nutritional value between House Bird’s Nest and Cave Bird’s Nest
I was told by friends who buy bird’s nest frequently that cave bird’s nest is superior to house bird’s nest. If you were to step into a bird’s nest shop, you will realize that cave bird’s nest fetches a higher price as well. The main reason is because cave bird’s nest are produced by wild swiftlets and are thus considered to be more valuable.
The truth of the matter is, the higher price takes into account the danger harvesters face when harvesting cave bird’s nest and such bird’s nest typically contain more foreign materials such as feathers and twigs. It is also more susceptible to heavy metal contamination due to external environment factors.
Given all the potential risks and higher price point, it is probably best to stick to house bird’s nest since there isn’t any difference in terms of nutritional value between the two.
FACT #3:
Beautifully Molded Bird’s Nest and Bird’s Nest Strips have the same nutritional value
Most of the bird’s nest that we come across in shops come in a beautiful concave shape, as pictured below.
If you thought the shape is completely natural, sorry to burst your bubble. This shape is actually molded to perfection using a plastic mold.
Before they are molded, bird’s nest comes in strips. If you are less concerned about presentation or if you are buying for personal consumption, bird’s nest strips are just as good and are likely to be more attractively priced too.

FACT #4:
White Bird’s Nest is better than Yellow Bird’s Nest
Yellow bird’s nest is widely popular due to its gorgeous colour, but did you know that it belongs to an older harvest? Yellow bird’s nest are usually harvested after more than 4 -6 months and the colour is usually caused by fermentation or oxidation. The cooking process is also longer as it is much harder.
Fresh bird’s nest is white in colour. As bird’s nest is best taken fresh, white bird’s nest is more nutritious and beneficial for your body!
FACT #5:
Never boil your bird’s nest beyond a temperature of 120 Degrees Celsius as the nutritional value would be lost
Cooking bird’s nest is an art in itself. The first step is to soak the bird’s nest in water for 2 hours before double boiling. Double boiling is an integral step to preserve the essence and nutrients. Do take precautions to ensure that temperature does not go beyond 120 Degrees Celsius as this will cause the nutritional value of the bird’s nest to be compromised.

Now you know what to look out for when you go bird’s nest shopping! I hope you found these 5 facts about Bird’s Nest useful.

Foodpanda Review: Indian Curry House

February 23, 2015 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
There are times when all I want to do is stay at home and take a break from everything as it helps me to recharge. What do I do when it’s time for lunch or dinner then? I’d either whip up a simple meal or turn to foodpanda for more food options.
What’s foodpanda?
Foodpanda is an online food delivery platform that is available in over 45 countries worldwide.
All
you have to do is key in your postal code to find out which restaurants
are near you, browse through their menus, place your orders and your
meal will be delivered right to your doorstep. You can even opt for cash
on delivery if you prefer not to use credit card payment.
No access to a laptop or computer? You can also download the foodpanda mobile app and use it place your orders.

I’ve been using foodpanda for restaurant food delivery over the past two years, before this review opportunity even came up and it has never failed to deliver (haha!) when it comes to food quality and timeliness.

What did I order this time?

I usually order from Pasta Mania, but this time, I decided to try Indian Curry House. JW and I have been craving for Indian Butter Chicken and the numerous positive reviews online gave us the confidence to place our order with complete peace of mind.

We ordered a few other dishes to complete our meal and everything came within an hour. I was half expecting the food to be lukewarm, but was pleasantly surprised that every dish arrived piping hot.

As the portions were very generous, we invited a friend over to join us for dinner.

Butter Chicken & Kashmiri Rogan Josh

All of us were full of praise for the food as every dish was rich in taste and very flavourful. We initially thought that there would be more curry gravy than meat to fill our tummies, but every spoonful of curry came with slices of chicken or mutton to satiate the inner carnivores in us. We found both the Butter Chicken and Kashmiri Rogan Josh to be authentic and absolutely satisfying.

Aloo Gobi

The Aloo Gobi is a delightful vegetarian dish to accompany your favourite curries. The mix of potatoes and cauliflowers cooked in a blend of Indian spices is so delicious, we wasted no time in wiping the plate clean.

Chill Honey Potatoes are another addictive snack that would serve well as a side dish too. These are essentially Indian-style french fries. I did wish the fries were crispier but the touch of Indian spices is sure to perk up your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Chilli Honey Garlic Potatoes

Would I order from Indian Curry House again?
The answer is a resounding yes. In fact, throughout the meal, all three of us couldn’t stop nodding our heads in approval.
Being able to enjoy restaurant food in the comfort of our home is one of the pleasures in life that we truly appreciate and relish. With foodpanda, this wish is easily fulfilled.
Tired of takeaways, too lazy to eat out or cook?

Perhaps it is about time you checked out foodpanda too!

L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon Hong Kong

February 3, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
My previous trips to Hong Kong revolved solely around shopping, hence I decided that it was about time to pay a visit to some of Hong Kong’s best restaurants when I was planning for my recent trip in December.
L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon was one of the restaurants on my tick list and I made a lunch reservation there immediately after booking my air tickets and accommodation. Yes, that was how eager I was to secure a seat at the highly raved French restaurant which was awarded three Michelin stars by the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong and Macau for three consecutive years.
Located at Landmark Atrium at Central, the restaurant is easily accessible by MTR and usually fully booked, so do remember to make your reservations early. Reservations can be made through their website here.
The contemporary decor exudes seductive charm while the casual atmosphere and cozy setting at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon was a breath of fresh air and made us feel right at home. We were seated at a circular bar facing the kitchen where we could feast our eyes on all aspects of the food preparation process, a refreshing change from the usual fine dining experience that we were used to.

We truly enjoyed the vast selection of warm breads which went really well with the butter, and as much as we wanted to have seconds, it was best that we reserve our stomachs for the main highlights of our sumptuous lunch.

The lunch menus at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon are customizable and affordably priced at HKD$588 (3-course), HKD$698 (4-course) and HKD$838 (5-course) respectively. Every set comes with an amuse bouche, coffee and tea and mignardises (commonly known as petit four).
Amuse Bouche

For appetizers, we had the L’ceuf De Poule (crispy poached egg on mimolette cheese emulsion with “Iberico” ham) and La Saint-Jacques (pan seared scallops with crunchy endive salad and mango).
The crispy poached egg was an instant hit with us. The individual flavours of the mimolette cheese emulsion, crispy poached egg and Iberico ham meld together seamlessly to create an unexpectedly delicious entree. Bursting with flavours with every bite, this ingenious creation is one of the best entrees we have had.

Appetizer: L’ceuf De Poule (Crispy poached egg on mimolette cheese emulsion with “Iberico” ham)
The pan seared scallops were fresh and succulent. What I liked most about this appetizer was the interesting play of textures in the form of thinly sliced croutons, mangos and greens, which added a delightful crunch to the dish.

Appetizer: La Saint-Jacques (pan seared scallops with crunchy endive salad and mango)
For our mains, we had Le Saumon (semi-cooked Scottish salmon with teriyaki sauce and wasabi flavoured spinach) and Les Spaghettis (Maine lobster spaghetti and coral emulsion).
You could also choose to have Pan-fried maigre with ginger in baby leek bouillon, or pick from their selection of meats, such as L’Agneau (roasted lamb leg with white beans and chorizo), La Volaille (chicken fricasse with Chateau Chalon sauce and mashed potato) and  Le Cochon Iberique (roasted Iberico pork “pluma” with broccoli puree and hazelnuts)

Mains: Le Saumon (semi-cooked Scottish salmon with teriyaki sauce and wasabi-flavoured spinach)
The Scottish salmon could have been better marinated to enhance the sweetness of the fish but I loved that it was paired with wasabi-flavoured spinach to give it that extra kick.

I can never say no to lobsters, and the Maine lobster spaghetti and coral emulsion made my heart skip a beat. The spaghetti was cooked al-dante and the Maine lobster was cooked to perfection, leaving the meat juicy and tender, creating a symphony of rich flavours that will certainly tantalize your taste buds. If you’re afraid that the tapas style servings here are inadequate, you should consider ordering this dish.
Mains: Les Spaghettis (Maine lobster spaghetti and coral emulsion)

The mashed potatoes side dish may look ordinary, but taste-wise, it was extraordinary. It was extremely smooth, fluffy and creamy, leaving us wanting more with every bite. I could have this as a snack everyday.

Mashed Potatoes

You could choose to end off the meal with a fine french selection of cheeses or desserts. We chose to go with desserts instead.

Desserts: La Poire (cinnamon pear compote with caramel ice-cream)

The cinnamon pear compote with caramel ice-cream looked like an exquisite work of art but it tasted rather ordinary. In comparison, the classic Mont Blanc blew our minds. I usually try to steer away from heavier desserts such as Mont Blanc but this time, I couldn’t stop after taking my first bite. Absolutely divine.

Desserts: Le Mont-Blanc (classic Mont Blanc with chestnut ice-cream)
To round off our meals, we had a cup of tea each paired with petit four. I particularly loved the light and refreshing taste of the citrus flavoured fruit jellies.

Petit Four

Hailed as the “Chef of the Century”, Joel Robuchon has since clinched a total of 25 Michelin stars across the chain of restaurants he operates in cities such as Paris, Tokyo, Las Vegas, Bangkok and Hong Kong. No other chef in the world has achieved more Michelin stars than he has.
L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon Hong Kong is definitely a must-try as it is the closest 3 Michelin star Robuchon restaurant to home and probably the most pocket-friendly one to boot.

Food at The Clementi Mall: Tori Q

August 7, 2014 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
I live in the west and Clementi Mall is a mall that I frequent regularly because of the numerous food and shopping options available.
Directly linked to Clementi MRT Station at Level 3, Clementi Mall is always bustling with life. Frankly, with a total of 142 shops in Clementi Mall, including 16 restaurants and cafes, it isn’t hard to see why.
Some of the shops that I visit to top up my beauty essentials and for grocery shopping include FairPrice Finest, Watsons and Guardians. I often head there for dinner too and one of my favourite places to dine in is Tori Q (#B1-19), which serves delicious yakitori with Japanese rice at affordable prices.

As Clementi Mall is situated in the heart of the Clementi neighbourhood, which is just a stone’s throw away from key tertiary institutions such as NUS, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and SIM University, I always see hoards of students and young adults queuing at Tori Q, in a bid to fill their tummies after a long day at school.

You can either go for the set meals or ala carte options at Tori Q. For ease of convenience, I always go for the yakitori set which comes with 4 types of yakitori and Japanese rice topped with seaweed.

Tori Q presents a myriad of yakitori options, leaving me spoilt for choice every time. On occasions when I’m feeling greedier than usual, I would also order additional sticks just to satiate my hunger.

Their quail’s eggs and asparagus wrapped in pork are just some of my personal favourites.
I have a penchant for quail’s eggs and can have them everywhere and anywhere. The asparagus wrapped in pork, on the other hand, is superb and an absolute delight to savour. The well-marinated pork is the perfect accompaniment to the fresh, juicy asparagus. I love it!
The seating capacity at Tori Q is rather limited but I really enjoy dining at the cozy bar counter. Thus far, I have never had any difficulties finding a seat as the turnover is brisk. That, I guess, is the beauty of fast food.

I usually end off my meal with a durian pancake at Four Seasons Durian (#B1-K10), but as fate would have it, I came across a relatively new joint called Crepe Signature (#B1-K17) that very evening and decided to give it a go instead.

I was craving for the banana nutella crepes that I’ve had on many occasions when I visited Bangkok and also during my recent trip to Phuket with Karen and Raphael. I have never seen such crepes being sold on our sunny island, so you could imagine how excited I was when I realised banana nutella crepe was on Crepe Signature’s menu! However, I was already bursting at the seams from the satisfying dinner at Tori Q and was lulled into sharing a strawberry nutella crepe with the hubby instead. Yes, my hubby loves strawberries.

The crepes here are much crispier than what I had in Thailand. I personally prefer the softer and less crisp version found in Thailand and I also wish the stall could have been more generous with the nutella spread. But that is just my personal preference. On a more positive note, this version is less sinful and it definitely made me feel less guilty about devouring it!
Food aside, Clementi Mall also offers a phlethora of renowned fashion and specialty stores such as Charles & Keith, Cotton On, Rubi Shoes and Young Hearts.
I will be sharing more about shopping in Clementi Mall in my next post later this week, so do keep a lookout for it!

Yum Cha Restaurant

April 2, 2014 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

Yum Cha (which means “drinking tea” in Cantonese) is a Chinese tradition that is similar to having brunch or high tea, minus the sandwiches, scones and macroons. Instead, yum cha often conjures up images of waitresses pushing wooden carts filled with dim sum laid in piping hot bamboo steamers.

I don’t think I have ever mentioned this, but dim sum is one of my favourite comfort food. The endless varieties leave me spoilt for choice and the fact that they always come in small bite-sized portions make them absolutely perfect for fussy eaters like me who love to try a little bit of everything.

I especially like dim sum buffets but most of them take place during lunch on weekdays (ending at 2.30pm) and can be crazily crowded. You can imagine my delight when I discovered that the weekday dim sum buffet at Yum Cha Restaurant starts from 3 – 6pm instead. If you want to avoid the lunch crowds and enjoy a slow leisurely meal, Yum Cha Restaurant is the place to go. Plus, you’ll get to savour 60 over dishes out of more than 80 items on Yum Cha’s menu at such an amazing price!

Yum Cha Restaurant is conveniently located in the main artery of Chinatown along the crossroads of Trengganu Street and Temple Street. The restaurant may be situated in the heart of a bustling tourist spot filled with modern shops selling gifts and souvenirs, but it chose to retain an old world charm with marble tables and wooden chairs reminiscent of tea houses from the past.

A wave of nostalgia hit me when I sat down as it was only then that I realized that the waitresses here continue to serve dim sum the good old fashion way, by pushing wooden dim sum carts from table to table while patrons like you and I peered into the glass display to place our orders.

I had the privilege of trying out an assortment of delicious dim sum from Yum Cha Restaurant during a food tasting session recently.  With a total of over 80 dim sum dishes on the menu, Yum Cha offers a sumptuous spread to tantalize your taste buds. Karen and I had such a satisfying meal, we almost had to skip dinner!
YUM CHA SIGNATURE DISHES
Their
signature dim sum include Xiao Long Bao, Prawn Dumplings,
Shark’s Fin with Meat Dumpling, Fish Roe Siew Mai, Phoenix Claw, Paper
Chicken Wings, Prawn & Mango Sesame Fritters, Baked Mini Egg Tarts,
and Crispy Red Bean with Banana.

Yumcha Prawn Dumpling (S$4.60)
Shark’s Fin with Meat Dumpling (S$3.80)

Fish Roe Siew Mai (S$3.80)

Phoenix Claw (S$4.00)

Paper Chicken Wings (S$4.60)

Xiao Long Bao (S$4.60)
Prawn & Mango Sesame Fritters (S$4.00)
Baked Mini Egg Tarts (S$2.80)

Crispy Red Bean with Banana Pancake (S$3.80)
Among these signature dishes, the fish roe siew mai was probably the most popular dish at our table and it is not difficult to understand why. Made from a tasty mix of chicken and prawn paste, it was bursting with flavours with every bite.
The Crispy Red Bean with Banana turned out to be a hot favourite too. Fried to golden perfection, it was light and crisp on the outside, yet tender and moist on the inside. I could taste the goodness of the red bean and banana combination with every mouthful.
TRADITIONAL DIM SUM DISHES
We also tried the usual dim sum suspects such as Fresh Prawn Rice Roll, Century Egg and Lean Meat Congee, Fried Carrot Cake, Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice, Crispy Vegetarian Spring Rolls, BBQ Pork Buns, Chicken Yam Puffs, Deep Fried Shrimp Beancurd Roll and Custard Buns, Filo Scallop Rolls, Prawn Wanton Crisps, Crispy Silver Fish and Fish Meat Stuffed Beancurd.
It was difficult for us to pick our favourites as each dish brought its own distinctive flavours to the table. I was personally drawn to the Fresh Prawn Rice Roll and Prawn Wanton Crisps as the
prawns were fresh and succulent. Apparently, choosing the right type of prawns to be used in dim sum is an art in itself and makes a significant difference to the overall taste. We were told that Yum Cha only uses white prawns as this particular breed is best suited for dim sum.
Fresh Prawn Rice Roll (S$4.00)

Century Egg and Lean Meat Congee (S$2.80)

Fried Carrot Cake (S$3.80)

Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice (S$4.20)
Crispy Vegetarian Spring Rolls (S$3.00)

BBQ Pork Bun (S$2.80)
Chicken Yam Puff (S$3.80)
Deep Fried Shrimp Beancurd Roll (S$4.00)

Custard Buns (S$2.20)

Filo Scallop Rolls (S$4.60)

Prawn Wanton Crisps (S$4.00)
Crispy Silver Fish (S$8.00)

Fish Meat Stuffed Beancurd (S$3.80)
Contemporary Creations

Yum Cha also created a series of innovative specialty dim sum dishes to cater to the ever-changing tastes of its customers.
The Squid Ink Dumplings were one of the most unique creations that we tried. I would give this dish top marks for creativity as I have never seen this being served anywhere else. Although I generally have a preference for more traditional dim sum dishes such as xiao long bao, this was certainly a welcomed change.
Squid Ink Dumplings (S$4.80)

The Oyster Siew Mai is yet another specialty dish with a slightly chewier texture than its traditional counterpart.  I have a soft spot for oysters and I really liked this dish.

Oyster Siew Mai (S$4.80)
My favourite savoury dim sum that afternoon came in the form of Yum Cha’s Crabmeat “Sea Treasure” Dumpling Soup, a premium item that is currently not included in the buffet menu. The soup was flavourful and I really enjoyed the generous servings of shredded crabmeat. I would definitely order this again on my next visit.

Yum Cha Crabmeat “Sea Treasure” Dumpling Soup (S$7.80)

Desserts

Just when we were about to surrender after devouring all these delectable dim sum dishes, desserts were served. I am convinced that all of us have separate stomach compartments for dessert, because none of us seemed to have problems woofing down these yummy traditional desserts although we were already so stuffed!

Double-boiled Hashima with Red Dates (S$8.00)
I love hashima for its nourishing properties (and collagen!), hence the Double-boiled Hashima with Red Dates was a natural choice for me. Thankfully, the chewy, soft gelatinous texture of the hashima was easy on the stomach too.
The osmanthus cake was fragrant with just a hint of sweetness and it also had a nice bouncy texture to it. These are perfect as light refreshments.

Osmanthus Cake (S$3.60)
One of the more unique desserts we had at Yum Cha was the Lemongrass Jelly with Fruits. The subtle citrus flavour was absolutely refreshing and the fruits added a delightful crunch to the silky smooth lemongrass jelly.
Lemongrass Jelly with Fruits (S$4.60)

Well, that pretty much summed up my meal!  Are you salivating yet?

The good news is, you’ll get to enjoy most of these delicacies and more at Yum Cha’s Dim Sum Buffet for just S$21.80++ on weekdays! This is definitely one of the most value-for-money dim sum buffets around and as you are reading this, I have already made plans to head down with my friends and family for yet another feast!
