What & Where to Eat (and Drink) in Bangkok

February 28, 2016 by Regina Chow No Comments

Food was the highlight of my recent trip to Bangkok. We literally spent every waking moment hunting down cafes, restaurants and local eateries in the Land of Smiles. If you follow me on my instagram and snapchat accounts (@reginachow_sg), you would know that aside from my personal style posts, they were filled with pictures of food!

For once, shopping took a backseat, something that I didn’t think was possible in the past. I probably already gave you a flavour (pun intended) of what and where to eat in Bangkok on your next trip but I wanted to share more details in this post so you’ll know what to expect and more importantly, how you can get to these locations as well.

 1. Audrey Cafe & Bistro

Audrey Cafe & Bistro
Audrey Cafe is one of the prettiest cafes in Bangkok that also offers an extensive range of authentic Thai and Thai-fusion fare. Popular items on the menu include Tom Yum Pizza and Thai Milk Tea Crepe Cake (very soft and delicious!). I would also highly recommend the fluffy omelette with Thai sweet chilli sauce as the perfect accompaniment.
There are many branches in Bangkok, but do visit its first flagship stand-alone cafe in Thong Lor to truly bask in the beauty of its French country-inspired interior.
Thai Milk Tea Crepe Cake

Address:
136/3 Soi Thonglo 11, Vaddhana, Sukhumvit 55, Bangkok
(Take BTS to Thong Lo, followed by a short walk)

Opening Hours:
11am – 10pm

Directions to get to Audrey Cafe

 2. One Ounce for Onion

One Ounce for Onion
Other than Thong Lor, the Ekkamai area is home to several quaint cafes. One Ounce for Onion is an example of a lovely hole-in-the-wall café that serves coffee and light meals in Ekkamai.
Popsicle waffles is definitely the highlight of this café. The flavours blend together seamlessly and leave you wanting more with every bite.
Popsicle Waffles at One Ounce for Onion
To get here, you can take the BTS to Ekkamai and catch a cab. If you enjoy walking in the heat, you can do so as well, but do note that the walk takes at least 15-20 minutes on average.
If you’re an early bird, you would also be happy to know that One Ounce for Onion opens at 9am, unlike most cafes which only open from 11am onwards.
Address:
19/12 Ekkamai 12, Sukhumvit 63 Road,
Klongton Nua, Wattana, Bangkok
(Take BTS to Ekkamai, followed by cab)

Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 9am – 6pm
Weekends: 9am – 8pm

3. Karmakamet Diner

Karmakamet Diner’s Strawberry In the Clouds
Karmakamet Diner needs no introduction as you probably would have seen its Instagram-worthy signature dessert, Strawberry In the Clouds, circulating on the internet by now. How does it taste? I am happy to report that the strawberry cheese cake in the cup beneath the massive rainbow coloured candy floss is pretty satisfying.
But what struck me most when I stepped into this restaurant is how it instantly transports you to a land of magic and mystery. This is one of the most beautiful restaurants in all of Bangkok and is the perfect location to spend a leisurely afternoon or for romantic dinner dates.
The perfect spot for romantic dinner dates
Be transported to a land of magic and mystery at Karmakamet Diner
Stunning décor at Karmakamet Diner
To get to Karmakamet Diner, take the BTS to Phrom Phong and head towards Emporium Suites hotel. You will see this signage right after the multi-storey carpark.

Look out for this signage after the multi-storey carpark

Address:
30/1 Sukhumvit Soi 24 Bangkok (take BTS to Phrom Phong station)

Opening Hours:
10am – 1130pm

4. After You

Honey Shibuya Toast
After You is another popular café in Bangkok with several branches in major malls including Siam Paragon and Central World. Their Honey Shibuya Toast is the bomb. Crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside, it is an absolute delight to sink your teeth into this delicious dessert.
If Shibuya Toast is not your cup of tea, try the Kakigori Strawberry Cheesecake. Essentially flavoured ice (think bingsu) with chunks of strawberry cheesecake hidden within, this is my preferred choice of dessert for beating the heat.
Kakigori Strawberry Cheesecake
If you are staying in the Siam area, as with most Singaporeans, head to the Ground Floor of Siam Paragon Shopping Centre or the Ground Floor of Siam Square One (nearest BTS: Siam). There is also another branch at the 7th floor of Central World (nearest BTS: Chit Lom).
Opening Hours:
Siam Paragon: 10am – 10pm
Siam Square One: 12pm – midnight
Central World: 11am – 10pm

5. Chu Chocolate Bar & Cafe

Carbonara pasta stole the show at Chu

Located at the Exchange Tower that is directly linked from Asoke BTS and diagonally across from Terminal 21 shopping mall, Chu Chocolate Bar & Cafe is one of the more accessible cafes in Bangkok.

It serves up a wide range of brunch options including perennial favourites such as eggs benedict and french toast, but in my humble opinion, the carbonara pasta stole all the limelight. Topped with a perfectly poached egg, the pasta was cooked to al dante perfection in a light creamy sauce that was tasty yet not overwhelming on the palate. Two thumbs up!

Address:
2nd floor, Exchange Tower (Asoke Intersection) – linked to Asoke BTS

Opening Hours:
Mon- Fri: 730am – 930pm
Sat-Sun: 9am – 9pm

6. Roast

Strawberry Honey Iced Tea & Cafe Latte

Roast is another popular brunch spot that is equally known for their coffee (try their iced coffee!) and Strawberry Honey Iced Tea.

Iced Coffee from Roast

Its main location at The Commons is currently under renovation, but you can still visit its branch at Emquartier, a luxury mall linked to Phrom Phong BTS station, which is even more accessible to the masses. You can expect snaking queues at this joint throughout the day.

Address:
First floor, The Helix, Emquartier (take BTS to Phrom Pheng)

Opening Hours:
10am – 10pm daily

7. SabX2 Wanton Mee

SabX2 Wanton Mee

Brace yourself for the long queue at the famous Sabx2 Wanton Mee stall. Located across Platinum Mall at Soi Petchburi 19, this simple yet addictive bowl of wanton mee is a must-eat for most Singaporeans (including myself) in Bangkok. In fact, downing two bowls per person seems to be the norm here. In my opinion, the secret ingredient lies in the generous serving of crispy pork lard which makes this dish out of this world.

Address:
4/32-33 Soi Petchburi 19, Pratunam, Bangkok (nearest BTS: Chit Lom)

Opening Hours:
9am – 4pm

8. Rod Dee Det

Delicious beef and pork ball noodles at just 50 baht

If you prefer true-blue local food frequented largely by the Thais, Rod Dee Det is a good bet. This long-standing institution is known for their beef and pork ball noodles drenched in a peppery, flavourful broth that is bound to set your heart aflutter. Servings are small, so you can either have it as a snack or order two portions to make it a meal. Since it opens bright and early at 7.30am, you can even have a light breakfast here.
The shop is located directly across from TMB Bank. One thing to note about this shop is that its signage is entirely in Thai. To make it easier for you to locate the shop, here’s what it looks like:
Rod Dee Det

Address:
420 Siam Square Soi 7, Bangkok 10330, Thailand (Take BTS to Siam)

Opening Hours:
7.30am – 8pm

9. Inter

Affordably priced authentic Thai food

Inter is an affordable option for authentic Thai food. It is very popular among locals and is usually packed during meal times. Typical Thai dishes such as Morning Glory with Sambal, Basil Chicken, Garlic Pork and the likes will not disappoint, but if you were to ask me to pick my favourites, the Tom Yum Soup and Pad Thai would make the list as they are breathtakingly good.

Address:
432/1-2 Siam Square 9, Bangkok (Take BTS to Siam)

Opening Hours:
11am – 930pm

10. Number One Thai Iced Milk Tea

Me & my daily dose of Number One Thai Iced Milk Tea

If you are a huge fan of Thai Iced Milk Tea, Number One Brand’s version is a must-try. It is suitably thick and has just the right hint of sweetness to give you that extra kick. There are several kiosks and stalls around Bangkok, usually accompanied by long queues. You can find the kiosks at several BTS stations and at the food courts of major malls. For your easy reference, I have also included a link with a full listing of its stalls below.

Travel: Commune Cafe in Gold Coast

July 2, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
Waking up early for breakfast is usually a tall order for me, but not when I’m in Australia because the day starts early here. Cafes open as early as 6am and seats start filling fast from 7-8 am, so it is true when they say the early bird catches the worm.

We stopped by Commune Cafe before our day trip to Mount Tamborine. If you’re interested, I will be writing a separate post about some day trips you could do from Gold Coast, especially if you’re a nature lover.
Commune Cafe is located at Burleigh Heads, right beside Gold Coast Highway. We actually passed by this quaint little cafe on our way to our apartment from the airport on our very first day and made a mental note to come back for a visit.

I have a soft spot for corn fritters and chai latte. If I see them on the menu, I’ll definitely place an order for these two items. And that was exactly what I did at Commune Cafe. What I like about the food here is that everything is made from natural, organic ingredients, so you can be sure that you are feeding your body with nothing but the best.

The corn fritters here come with generous servings of avocado, rocket salad and a tangy thai chilli sauce dip, which goes surprisingly well with the star of the show. I loved it.
The chai latte is freshly brewed from tea leaves and served to you in a little metal pot, which makes the experience all the more authentic.

What did JW have? Well, he is just as predictable as I am when it comes to breakfast. Eggs Benedict is his Archilles’ heel and he orders this all the time whenever we go to a cafe for breakfast or brunch.

 Outdoor seats
here are aplenty and this is one cafe where you can sit all day long, bask in the sun and soak up the good vibes with a cup of coffee and some delicious yet healthy organic food in
tow. It is a beautiful spot to relax and chill with fellow friendly
cafe-goers who never fail to wear a warm smile on their faces.

Travel: Elk Espresso Cafe in Gold Coast

June 16, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

I was under the impression that cafes in Gold Coast pale in comparison to those in Sydney and Melbourne, but my recent trip to this sunny city proved me wrong. In fact, JW and I came across quite a number of good cafes thanks to recommendations from Urbanspoon, now known as Zomato (the Australian equivalent of Hungrygowhere) and Elk Espresso at Broadbeach was one of our favourite spots. If you ever visit Gold Coast, you have to come here for breakfast or brunch.

Why Elk Espresso? In a nutshell, the casual, laid-back Australian vibe and friendly service at Elk Espresso go hand-in-hand with its unpretentious yet absolutely delicious food to give you an experience that you’ll never forget. No wonder it is so popular with the locals! One of the most popular items on its breakfast/brunch menu is the very photogenic French Toast which comes with a medley of poached pears, salted caramel and dehydrated berries with vanilla bean mascarpone (A$17.50). Its prepossessing appearance is bound to brighten up any instagram feed.

The salted caramel sauce adds just a hint of sweetness to the french toast while allowing the natural flavours of the fruits and berries to shine through. I loved the refreshing touch of vanilla bean mascarpone which further enhances the party of flavours in your mouth, giving a new dimension to the overall taste.

To complement the comparatively sweeter french toast, we ordered a savoury breakfast favourite – Potato Hash with bacon, avocado, rocket, free-range eggs, hollandaise sauce, garlic, thyme and mushrooms (A$17). What a mouthful, literally, but this makes such a hearty and satisfying breakfast.
Aside from seasoned chefs, there is just something special about the eggs in Australia. They are always perfectly poached, with bright orange yolks that ooze out like liquid gold when you cut into it.

The portions are very generous and despite the temptation, we were way too full by the end of the meal to add anything else to our order.
Well, except that a cafe experience is never complete without a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and he had to have his coffee and me, my hot chocolate.
The cafe latte (A$3.60) is good by Australian standards (usually much higher than Singapore’s) but in comparison to the hot chocolate that I tried at Lindt Cafe in Sydney, I felt that the Lindt Hot Chocolate (A$5.50) here could be richer. Don’t get me wrong though, it was gratifying nonetheless.

We had such an enjoyable experience at Elk Espresso that we headed over to the owners’ new restaurant, Sparrow Eating House at Nobby Beach for dinner during our stay.
If you were wondering, yes, we gave two thumbs up for both establishments, and I can assure you that you wouldn’t want to miss them for the world.

Buck Tile St Cafe

November 25, 2014 by Regina Chow No Comments
Buck Tile St Cafe is a new cafe that we stumbled upon in our neighbourhood in the Western part of Singapore. I cannot express how delighted I was with this new discovery because sipping on a piping hot cup of cafe latte (or chai latte) while savouring delectable desserts in rainbow colours in a cafe that is situated just a stone’s throw away from where we live is right up my alley.
I love the cozy, non-pretentious vibe of the cafe. What stood out the most for me was this row of clocks that adorned the main wall. I’ve seen this decor in another cafe in town and to my amusement, the time in Pulau Tekong at that cafe was intentionally adjusted backwards. I’m sure all the men who have served National Service can relate to this as the first three months in Pulau Tekong would have felt like an eternity.
The time in Tekong at this cafe however, remains the same, though both of us felt that the time in West Coast could be slower here to depict a slower, more leisurely pace of life that you’ll get to experience the moment you step into Buck Tile Cafe, which was exactly what we felt.

I also love the sense of humour here. Anywhere with free wifi is a plus, especially if it is very wavy.
Did you know that the name Buck Tile St. Cafe came from the term Bucket List? At the back of the cafe, you will see little squares of colourful handwritten notes and wishes on a board titled “Bucket List”.

I personally think that the main highlight at this cafe is their interesting selection of cakes and desserts. I was tempted to order a slice of every cake just to have a taste, but JW wasted no time in turning down my suggestion. Only two servings of dessert please, he said.

I had to order their Tiramisu dessert because it comes in a really cute flower pot with a wooden spade that doubles up as a spoon! Let me assure you that not only is this dessert aesthetically pleasing, it fares very well in the taste department too. It is light, moist and has just the right balance of bitter chocolate powder to complement the creamy filling.

I also ordered the very peculiar blue velvet cake. JW was skeptical about my decision at first, but the cake’s extremely light and fluffy consistency won him over. Moist and soft on the inside, every mouthful was a delight. This is easily one of the best cakes we have tried in a long time.
Did I mention that I really adore the colourful confetti balls too?

I was craving for fries too as I’ve been abstaining from them for a long time due to a cough that wouldn’t go away. I needed that plate of spam fries.
It was a little salty, which was to be expected since you’re really munching on luncheon meat, but we thought it could have been fried a little more to make the edges crispier. Even then, it is hard to go wrong with spam fries and they were nonetheless a satisfying addition to our meal.
What about the drinks, especially the coffee? Coffee addicts would be happy to know that the coffee beans here are from Toby’s Estate. The cafe latte may not be mind-blowing, but it was definitely good enough to meet my hubby’s requirements whenever he needs a coffee fix.
I had the chai latte, my default comfort drink if I can find it on the menu in any cafe, and I am very happy to report that Buck Tile St Cafe serves up one of the better chai lattes in Singapore.
Many cafes that offer chai lattes make the mistake of adding too much milk, which drastically waters down the flavour and takes away the essence of the drink.  Here however, the milk takes a back seat while the distinctive flavour of the chai spice blend takes centre stage and really shines through. I love it.

So yes, we will definitely be coming back for our cafe latte and chai latte fix. I can’t wait to try the other desserts that we missed out this time too!

Getting my Ice-Cream Fix at Moments of Delight

July 1, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments
Who doesn’t love a
cold, icy treat on a balmy (and hazy!) day in Singapore? Better yet if
you’re getting freshly made, preservative-free ice-cream from Moments of
Delight!

Moments of Delight is a local ice-cream parlour that specializes in home-made ice-cream and sorbets. I visited their Bedok Point outlet some time back and had the good fortune of meeting up with Stephanie, the owner of the esteemed establishment.

A chat with Stephanie revealed that unlike most ice-cream parlours which offer artificially-enhanced and preservative-laden flavours, Moments of Delight uses only the freshest ingredients and fruits to achieve the natural goodness of their delectable ice-cream flavours.

Thanks to their healthier concoctions, Moments of Delight was awarded for their fine culinary skill by the Singapore Food Map.

Besides the usual suspects like vanilla, strawberry and chocolate, Moments of Delight also offers a myriad of unique flavours that are hot favourites among customers.  Some of the popular flavours include sea salt caramel (I LOVE this!), nutella with
hazelnut and marshmallow and milo.

If you love a dash of alcohol in
your ice-cream, the rum and raisin here is a definite must-try as the
taste of rum fills your mouth with every bite.

 I brought JW
along with me for the ice-cream tasting and we ordered a doublescoop of
salted caramel ice-cream and milo ice-cream.
Rich, creamy and
tasty, the salted caramel flavour departs from its conventionally sweet
counterparts and strikes the perfect balance between sweet and savoury.
The taste is exquisite and it’s my favourite out of the lot!
The milo ice-cream is devilishly yummy too. The velvety, silky smooth texture makes this a delight to savour. Absolutely decadent.

Next up on the menu was waffles with ice-cream. JW and I decided on a double scoop of nutella with hazelnut and marshmallows as well as vanilla.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I adore the waffles. Light and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, this is the perfect comfort food to indulge in on a hot day. I am not exaggerating when I say this is beyond divine!

The rich, chocolatey goodness of the nutella ice-cream complemented the milky vanilla ice-cream very well. Personally, I think this is the best ice-cream pairing ever.

However, you may wish to note that some waiting time is required as there is only one waffle machine at the outlet. But good things are worth waiting for, and I can assure you that this waffle is certainly worth the wait.

If you like sorbets, you would be pleased to know that Moments of Delight offers tantalizing sorbet varieties as well. I particularly love the lime and mango sorbets, which are great for refreshing your palate and beating the heat.

As you can tell from the menu, Moments of Delight also serves up a bevy of reasonably priced beverages and pastries to satisfy everyone’s palate.

I was craving for a cool, fizzy drink to quench my thirst that day, hence I went for the Ribena soda, which is essentially Ribena mixed with soda water. It was refreshing without being overwhelmingly sweet, just what I needed.

JW opted for the cafe latte, his go-to drink at any time of the day.

Delicious ice-cream and yummy drinks aside, I love the non-pretentious and cozy vibe that Moments of Delight exudes. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal place for intimate conversations with friends.
I will definitely be back with my friends for more waffles and ice-cream!

Joe’s Kitchen

March 26, 2013 by Regina Chow 2 Comments

Authentic Thai cuisine is hard to come by in Singapore, so if you’re looking for authentic Thai cuisine in the heartlands, you have to try Joe’s Kitchen. Located in Bukit Merah Lane 1, opposite Alexandra Hospital, it is a gem that I unraveled during a recent food review with Karen, Jasmine and Ruiying.
Joe is Thai (in the blue t-shirt below) and he’s the
wonderful chef behind all the sumptuous delicacies that you are about to
see in this post. While Joe whips up a storm in the kitchen, Jamie, his
wife, is always serving customers with a warm smile and making sure
that everyone is well taken care of.

I really liked the restaurant’s non-pretentious, homely ambience and the friendly service, which made me feel right at home. This is a place where you can let your guard down and unwind after a long day’s work by indulging in delicious Thai food!

Thai Iced Tea (S$2.50)
I like that the Thai iced tea here isn’t overwhelmingly sweet. It’s very refreshing and one of the best that I’ve tried. I can’t take caffeine because
it keeps me awake all night, but I have to order Thai iced tea whenever I
have Thai food. Now you know what my favourite drink is!

Mango Salad (S$7)

The mango salad appetizer has just the right mix of textures and flavours to awaken your tastebuds. The nuts add crunch and do a good job of balancing the sweet, sour and spicy flavours. In general, this appetizer is a pretty spicy one and will definitely not disappoint those of you who love spicy dishes.

Thai Prawn Cake (S$2.50 per piece)

The prawn cakes here are fried to golden perfection. The batter was light and crisp, just the way I like it. I would definitely order this again on my next visit!

Seafood Tom Yum Nam Kone (S$5.50/S$9.90/S$13.90)

The tom yum soup here packs a punch of flavours, complete with a lingering spiciness that makes this dish unforgettable. No wonder it is touted as one of the top 10 best tom yum soups in Singapore!

Mixed Vegetables (S$8/S$12/S$16)
The sliced chilli padi peeking out from all corners of this seemingly innocent dish promises to stimulate your tastebuds in the most unexpected ways. This dish is certainly not as bland as it looks. In fact, it is so flavourful, we finished the dish in minutes.

Black Olive Rice (S$8/S$12/S$16)

I have a penchant for olive vegetables in general and I liked that the black olive rice here is very fragrant and tasty. Yummy!

Thai Style Steamed Sea Bass (S$24)
The best way to test if a fish is fresh is to steam it, and I must say the fish here is really fresh! Infused with a blend of thai herbs and lemongrass, the fish is sweet, succulent and flavourful. This is another dish that I would highly recommend.

Claypot Crab with Vermicelli (Seasonal Price)
I love crabs and vermicelli so you can imagine how my eyes lit up the moment this dish was served. The glutton in me manifested and I devoured everything in no time.

Thai Red Ruby (S$3)
What better way is there to end a spicy meal than with a bowl of ice-cold Thai red ruby? This dessert is delicious and great for cooling down your palate. 😉

Tapioca with Coconut Milk (S$4.50)
I didn’t think I would like this dessert very much, but I was wrong. I LOVED it! The soft but firm texture of the tapioca went really well with the mild flavour of the coconut milk. Among all the desserts that we tried, this is my personal favourite.

Mango Sticky Rice (S$5.50)
Jamie told us that the mango that day was sour, but all of us were yearning for mango sticky rice that day and she was so sweet to accommodate our request. The glutinous rice was good, but as we had expected, the mango was sour. I’ll order this again when the mangoes are sweeter!
I thoroughly enjoyed the Thai cuisine at Joe’s kitchen and I’m very sure that I’ll be back again when I next crave for Thai food. If you’re looking for authentic Thai food in a cozy, homely setting, Joe’s Kitchen is the place to go!

Carpenter & Cook

March 14, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments
Ever since we got back to Singapore, JW and I have been on the lookout for great cafes. I’ve heard about Carpenter & Cook from a couple of friends and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it’s just a stone’s throw away from our home! Finally, the cafe culture is starting to permeate the western part of Singapore!

I was mesmerized by the decor
the moment I stepped in. I love retro and vintage items as they’ve so
much character. Check out those retro clocks. They make excellent
conversation pieces don’t they? The best part is, these vintage items
are up for sale!

Who would have thought that kitchen utensils could look this good on the wall? I thought this was a pretty novel idea for storing pots and ladles.
Now, on to the food! We were a little disappointed with the menu as we were expecting a comprehensive menu or at least one with sandwiches or pies to fill our growling tummies. If you’re thinking of coming here for a meal, do note that this cafe only offers pastries and muffins for tea.
I settled for the scone (S$4) and a bottle of lemonade. The scone was good!
JW liked the coffee too, although he opined that the coffee at Chye Seng Huat is much better. Here he was, trying to take an artistic shot of the coffee cup. It’s amazing what boredom does to a man. LOL

One thing that I didn’t quite like about the cafe was the limited seating capacity. They’re very packed during the weekend and it’s not uncommon to see patrons sharing seats at the larger tables. I prefer a cozier atmosphere where I can chat with friends without having strangers eavesdrop on our conversations, so the lack of personal space didn’t quite cut it for me.

That said, I would still revisit this cafe to try out the other snacks. This time, I’ll probably head there on a weekday. 😉

District 10

March 11, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments

I always try to find time for a leisurely brunch during the weekend and it’s great that most restaurants these days serve brunch till 4pm or even all-day brunch. I’m always on the lookout for new restaurants that serve brunch, so you can imagine my delight when Karen invited me for a food review at District 10 together with Calvin and Darren.

Located at the boundary of the
CBD district at UE Square (how strategic!), District 10 is a quiet
restaurant with a wonderful chillout vibe, perfect for losing yourself
to a couple of hours well spent.

Look at the wine bottles on display! Yes, you can also head to District 10 if you’re game for drinks after work on weekdays!

Losing ourselves to a delightful spread of breakfast varieties complete with desserts and drinks was precisely what we did on a lovely Sunday afternoon!

I have a huge soft spot for Eggs Benedict (S$24) – as Karen rightly pointed out, and I almost always order this when I’m out for brunch.

I love the spanish Jamon Iberico Ham that accompanied the poached eggs topped with hollandaise sauce. I was also pleasantly surprised to see crispy hash browns on the plate, which is a breath of fresh air for a dish like Eggs Benedict. I adore hash browns and having all my favourite breakfast foods in one dish is enough to make my day.

If you prefer a hearty breakfast with the full works, go for the Grease Spoon District 10 breakfast (S$26). It comes with bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns, tomatos and baked beans. If this is not enough to fill you up, I don’t know what will. 😉
The Spanish Omelette (S$18) is an interesting addition to the breakfast menu. Chock full of chorizo sausages and nutritious vegetables, this dish certainly packs a punch!
Aside from egg dishes, Karen decided to order something out of the ordinary – Wagyu Meatballs (S$24)! I thought the meatballs could be a little more moist but I absolutely loved the crispy shoestring fries which were fried to golden perfection.
The brunch ended off on a sweet note with delectable desserts.  The Sour Cherry Pie (S$12) that came with a dollop of pistachio ice-cream tasted great. The ice-cream flavour was very unique and complemented the cherries, which had just a tinge of sourness.

The Bitter Chocolate Tart (S$12) was my favourite of the lot. I generally like chocolate desserts and this was no exception. This lovely tart was made of delicious, rich dark chocolate that literally set my heart aflutter.

The Warm Apple Crumble (S$14) was equally good and every spoonful brought moist apple chunks lightly sprinkled with crumble to my mouth. Coupled with the sweet, lingering taste of creamy vanilla ice-cream, this dessert was very satisfying indeed.

I love meringue and pavlovas, so it was no surprise that I ordered the Pavlova (S$12) here. I liked the tangy flavour of the passionfruit ice-cream, which went really well with the meringue.

We were bursting at the seams by the end of the meal, but we had a lot of fun chatting and savouring all the different dishes at the restaurant!

January 9, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments
Those of you who have been to Australia would know about its highly raved coffee culture. I’m not just talking about cafes, but good coffee, which is hard to come by in Singapore. Thankfully, I heard that Chye Seng Huat Hardware serves excellent coffee. Given that it was set up by the same people who established Papa Palheta, JW and I had high hopes for its coffee.
Chye Seng Huat is housed within an old shophouse where one would least expect to find a cafe. Don’t be fooled by its shabby exterior though, for you will be surprised by its modern industrial decor, which completes the cafe’s chic, cozy vibe.

The key to great coffee lies in the barista’s skills. I may not be an avid coffee drinker, but I do enjoy watching the baristas hard at work. If you’re like me, you’ll love the counter seats here.

JW ordered a latte while I had their homemade lemonade. Both were good! To my surprise, JW exclaimed that the coffee here is just as good as what he was used to in Sydney.  Although I thought it would be a waste to taste his latte as my tastebuds tend to be rather undiscerning when it comes to coffee,  I decided to give it a go. My verdict? I was impressed! The coffee was rich, aromatic and smooth. If you’re a coffee lover, this is definitely THE place to go!
As I was feeling a little peckish, we ordered french toast to share. It was pretty decent although it may not be the best that I’ve tried. I’ll give it top marks for presentation alone!

I’m sure we’ll be heading down to Chye Seng Huat again soon. If you’re yearning for a cup of good coffee, I would highly recommend that you try out this place for your coffee fix!

Strawberry and Watermelon Cake

December 3, 2012 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
Nestled in a quiet spot away from the heaving Newtown traffic, Black Star Pastry is home to an assortment of delightful pies and desserts. My favourite dessert here is its popular strawberry and watermelon cake, sprinkled with slivered pistachios and rose petals.
It’s hard not to fall in love with such a beautiful yet wholesome cake, especially when it is devoid of sinful layers of sweet cream. Made of two layers of almond dacquoise, succulent strawberries and watermelon laced with just a hint of whipped cream, this cake definitely aims to please. More importantly, it tastes refreshingly light and every bite sends you to dessert nirvana.

Just thinking about it now makes me salivate. Need I say more? 🙂
