Seeing Red

February 6, 2011 by Regina Chow 6 Comments

I never used to like red, but I started taking a liking to the colour in recent years because it seems to complement my fair skin tone. It also adds a pop of colour to the rows of black dresses that hang in my wardrobe.

This particular dress, which I wore for the first day of CNY, caught my eye because of its origami inspired design and the cute embroidered sparrows sprinkled all over. It looks almost like a painting, don’t you think? The well cut silhouette accentuates the female form, making this the perfect alternative to a cheongsam.

My Grandmother, the Grande Dame of Peking Opera

February 4, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Feminism, in my books, refers to the empowerment of women and my maternal grandmother is the epitome of feminism. She always had a fiery maverick streak, and was a sharp, opinionated and determined lady who defied the conventions of her era.
In those days, the role of women was to be a virtuous wife and mother. Nothing more. But my grandmother chose to take fate into her own hands by pursuing a career in Peking opera. The journey, though tumultuous to say the least, eventually led to her resounding success as a top notch Peking opera actress. She was a born performer and could easily memorize her lines although she was illiterate.

Her hard work and resilience paid off. She stayed true to her art for the decades that followed and became a common fixture in the media and the Peking opera scene in Singapore till she retired some years ago. I remember that one of her proudest moments was when she received the Cultural Medallion award in 1992. For years thereafter, she would beam with pride whenever anyone made mention of the award.

I was surprised to find a clip of her interview for the award on the internet. If you’re interested to find out more, here it is for your viewing pleasure:

credits: http://infopedia.nl.sg/articles/SIP_1364_2009-09-14.html

Now, my grandmother has mellowed with age, in tandem with gradual memory loss. Her memory has deteriorated to the extent that she tends to repeat herself several times during a conversation. Sometimes, she can’t recall if I am already married and on other occasions, she would be urging me to procreate and respond to the government’s plea for a higher birth rate. Nonetheless, the one thing that remains unchanged is that child-like sparkle in her eyes which continues to express her relentless zest for opera and life.

It may be a scary thought to depart from this earth, but to die without having lived is much worse than one can imagine. To follow in my grandmother’s footsteps literally is no mean feat, but I can at least try to abide by her mantra and embark on a path that passion takes me.

Thank you grandma, for being my inspiration.

Reunion Dinner at Dian Xiao Er

February 4, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Hey guys, are you still gorging on those CNY goodies? CNY is that time of the year when you can devour the most sinful snacks without feeling guilty, just because everyone else around you is doing it too! I’ve been eating so many chocolates, bak kwa and pineapple tarts that I can sense a sore throat coming my way!

Two days ago, I had my reunion dinner with my in-laws at Dian Xiao Er, one of my favourite mid-tier Chinese restaurants. In line with the festive cheer, I threw on a tangerine ruffled dress to partake in the season’s festivities!

If you ever head down to Dian Xiao Er, be sure to try the flavourful duck and crispy cod fish as these are highly raved dishes that you won’t want to miss.

Most of my girlfriends fear their in-laws, especially their MILs because of their supposedly nitpicking ways and unreasonable behaviour. I have to count my blessings because my in laws are some of the most understanding people in the world and I look up to them as role models in many ways.

Families are the compass that guide us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter. — Brad Henry

I think this quote captures the essence of Chinese New Year. It is not only that time of the year for endless feasting, but it is also that time of the year when families come together as one to bask in the purity of family bliss, knowing deep inside our hearts that we are who we are today because of our family’s guidance and upbringing, and most importantly, that familial love will always stand the test of time.

Lohei with Friends at Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant

February 3, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
My second lohei celebration was with JW’s friends at Szechuan Douhua Restaurant, located on the 60th floor of UOB plaza. The spectacular view of the city skyline and Marina Bay Sands is one of the key highlights of the restaurant.

At S$28++ per pax for the dimsum set, the food was not bad as there was a wide selection of dim sum. However, if given a choice, I would still prefer Royal China or Peach Garden .

The main grouse that we had was the service, or rather, lack thereof. The service here was somewhat lacklustre due to the long waiting time and the servers’ lack of attentiveness. There was hardly any other guests around but the restaurant seemed so severely shorthanded that we had much difficulty trying to attract the servers’ attention.

We certainly didn’t see this coming from a supposedly top class restaurant. Save for the picturesque scenery and ambiance, Si Chuan Dou Hua didn’t quite cut it for me. Nonetheless, we did have fun chatting away and taking photos of the beautiful view before it started pouring!

Early Reunion Dinner At Grandma’s

February 2, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
Here’s wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year! How was your reunion dinner? I’ve already had 3 loheis so far, and it’s only the eve of Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year came early for my family this year as the first lohei celebration started last Saturday at my grandmother’s house.

It has become a tradition for my extended family to gather at my grandmother’s house for reunion dinner every Chinese New Year. We hardly get to meet one another usually as we all have hectic schedules but without fail, year after year, we would all make it a point to meet and catch up during our reunion dinner.

This year, we have a new addition to our family. My baby cousin Shuhai was born in January and joined us just in time for our reunion dinner! It’s funny how most newborns tend to possess an extraordinary ability to sleep soundly throughout the entire day. Likewise, Shuhai has this superpower too. She slept the whole night despite all the noise from the telly and our endless chatter.

And here’s presenting one of my favourite cousins, Shuya, Shuhai’s elder sis. She’s a whiz at iPhone games (she was holding her mum’s iPhone in the photo below), is extremely bright and not to mention very hyperactive too. I could barely keep up with her energy level and was hopelessly exhausted by the end of the night!

Oh and kids nowadays are so vain! We took a couple of photos, but this photo below was the only one that passed Shuya’s QC test. LOL!

Have a great rabbit year ahead people! May this new year bring good health, prosperity and happiness to you and your family! Meanwhile, let’s all enjoy the long weekend filled with lots of feasting and angpows!

Team Building & Seoul Yummy

February 1, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
The month of January is usually a busy period for everyone at the office as this is when all our overseas-based colleagues return for work plan discussions, training and team building. After a whirlwind of events, I’m glad we finally have some time to recuperate during the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays!

After our department teambuilding at ECP, I met JW at Novena Square 2 for dinner at Seoul Yummy. My friends have been raving about this Korean restaurant for eons, and I was elated that I finally had the opportunity to try it.

We ordered the set meal for 2 persons and the food was so yummy (I love puns!) that I practically wiped out everything on the table single-handedly. I actually finished the whole bowl of kimchi soup by myself! No wonder JW always tells me that my eating habits are burning an enormous hole in his pocket.

Erm…well, I guess you would have realised by now that food is an integral part of my life (in addition to shopping) despite my petite frame! Sometimes I wonder if all the nutrients have gone into my long hair!

Speaking of which, looking at these photos is making me terribly hungry again! I would kill to have a bowl of kimchi soup right now.

My Birthday Celebration Yet Again

January 31, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
I’ve just received the full set of birthday photos from Karen and I just couldn’t wait to post them up! Yes, I blogged about my birthday previously (click here) but here’s the final piece to complete the jigsaw.

Just before Sushi delivered Leonidas, all of us gathered for a massive pig-out session at Vivocity’s Shin Kushiya. This is another Japanese restaurant with absolutely yummy yakitori and grilled dishes.

Sweet Sushi surprised me with a cowhide rug for my early birthday gift! I was very touched as I’ve always wanted one and she actually remembered! This thoughtful gift is now sitting in my guest room and I get this warm, fuzzy feeling every time I look at it.

On my actual birthday, Jolene, Karen, Ethan, JW and I had a scrumptious meal at my favourite Japanese restaurant, Nanbantei.

JW got me a mini cake, a bouquet of purple Eustomas (my favourite flowers!) and a long Chanel pearl necklace (many thanks to Jun for purchasing this on his behalf!).

After a hearty lunch, we popped by Old Town White Coffee to unveil the presents they got for me. There were so many gorgeous items hidden within the lace paper bag!

I feel very blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful friends and loved ones. The company is all that matters and I’m grateful to have these beautiful people in my life.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

January 30, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Right behind URA centre, rows of beautifully conserved shophouses line the streets, juxtaposed against a backdrop of towering skyscrapers. Never forget your roots, this picture before me seems to say. To me, these restored shophouses serve as a constant reminder of our heritage while the skyscrapers depict our growth and development over the years.
Club Street and Ann Siang Street, in particular, now house cafes, stand-alone boutiques run by local designers, as well as one of my favourite bookstores, BooksActually. The buildings here were given a brand new look but elements of its glorious past were carefully preserved.

JW and I chanced upon a quaint little cafe called Le Chocolat Cafe at Club Hotel on a dreamy afternoon after our visit to URA. We were immediately blown away by both its exterior and interior as it reminded us of cafes typically found in Europe. It was a breath of fresh air.

We popped by for a quick bite of salad and sandwiches. The cafe primarily serves salads, sandwiches as well as desserts such as cakes and tarts. It also has a breakfast menu which ends at 10.30a.m. Service was great and I would recommend this place for afternoon tea if you’re in the vicinity.

My Caesar salad came in a cute little wooden bowl!

I was so enthralled by the surroundings and was looking forward to wandering around a bit more, but unfortunately, it started drizzling! I’ll definitely be back again when the weather is friendlier! Again, the dress here is from my lovely sponsor, ClubCouture.

The Magic of Architecture

January 29, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
Close friends would know that I developed an interest in architecture and interior design after I did up my own home. I still pore over fashion magazines such as Cleo, Female and Vivi, especially when I’m at the hair salon (it’s the only way to keep myself awake!), but nothing gets my attention the way my favourite interior design magazine Home & Decor does.
Recently, I made my way down to the URA centre for the “20 under 45: The next generation” exhibition. It is a showcase of famous works by young and talented architects in Singapore who have since made a name for themselves in the local and international arena.

I never realised that we had so many talented architects who are capable of creating beautiful buildings and transforming our cityscape into a magical work of art.

Many of them have international accolades to their names and wow, I must say their works definitely do not pale in comparison to their contemporaries in the western world. Some of the more interesting works that caught my eye include the origami house by Formwerkz Architects, (above) inspired by origami planes and the Stadium MRT station (below right). Who would have thought that such amazing architecture existed on our tiny island?

Besides these state-of-the-art designs, there is also a myriad of conserved buildings and shophouses in Singapore that add spice and character to the overall city scape. I promise you’ll see more of these buildings in my following post.

Finally, here’s what I wore to the exhibition. This lovely grecian-inspired maxi dress was a gift from ClubCouture. I’m very honoured that ClubCouture has invited me on board their ClubCouture Ambassador 2011 programme. I’ll talk more about that soon, and you can be sure that there will be more goodies from ClubCouture coming your way!

Ruffles & Bows

January 27, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
I have a soft spot for bows and ruffles, which can be a little over the top sometimes if you’re not careful.

Here, I tried to strike a balance by pairing my pretty floral bow top (it’s a reversible top with a cat print behind!) with simple white ruffled shorts for running errands on a weekend.

Love it? Hate it? I’ll love to hear from you!
