Porcorosso

August 13, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments
Now that my stay in Sydney has been extended (didn’t quite expect this but I’m really blessed to have the support of everyone around me) to the end of the year, I have more excuses to explore the city and venture out of my comfort zone. This mantra applies to both food and activities.

For some strange reason, I’ve been rockclimbing and dancing the past week, a routine that I fully intend to keep up with for the period that I’m here (Note: keyword here is INTEND). My aching body is a testament to my hard work, and what better way to reward myself than with a sumptuous meal at yet another newly discovered restaurant.

Porcorroso is a Jap-Italian fusion restaurant that we decided to try on a whim after JW read about it online. He sure looks pretty smug about his discovery here. Haha.

I ordered the mentaiko (spicy cod roe) pasta and devoured everything within the blink of an eye. I’ve never had mentaiko pasta that tasted this good and now I can’t wait to head there for lunch again!

Every strand of pasta was evenly coated with mentaiko and a refreshing burst of flavour thanks to the lemon zest, basil and seaweed concoction.

JW had the parma ham pizza, which was good, but nothing out of the ordinary because it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that it’s almost impossible to go wrong with parma ham and wild rocket.

We’ll probably head back here to try the other pizzas some other time, especially since the reviews online seem pretty promising. πŸ™‚

Parks & Swings

August 10, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
There is something special about parks that draws me to them. The luscious greenery and blossoming flowers, coupled with azure blue skies and the sound of birds chirping, provide a tranquil environment for chilling out after a long day.

When a park comes equipped with swings, it’s even better. The adrenalin rush from swinging your legs in the air never fails to put a smile on anyone’s face and always seems to be the panacea for all worries and troubles. Spending a day in the park always makes me feel happier!

Now, let’s move on to my outfit for the day. Other than pastels, I’ve always loved neutral shades for their versatility. These colours exude a quiet elegance and femininity without being over the top. The muted shades also mean that the more focus is placed on the design and texture of the material used.

Tweed Jacket from Great World City
Cap from Forever New
Ring from Accesorize

Here’s wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

Campos Coffee and Sweet Potato Fries in Newtown

August 9, 2012 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

My coffee addict of a husband and I have been hunting down the best coffee in Sydney, so it was no wonder we decided it was time to head down to the flagship Campos Coffee store located at Newtown, which was awarded 3 cups (i.e. full marks) by Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Coffee Guide 2012.

Established 10 years ago, this cafe used to be a sleepy shop beneath an apartment. Things are different now of course, and it’s always bustling with life, even on weekdays!

The first floor is where the expresso bar is situated. Throngs of tourists and locals alike flock here just to savour the best coffee. No menus are provided but they offer the usual classics like latte, espressos, and also extras such as affogatos, iced coffees, teas and hot chocolate.

We only realized on hindsight that the second floor has a cupping room, which is probably worth a go for every coffee lover at $30 per pax. For the uninitiated, cupping is similar to wine tasting.

According to Campos Coffee’s website, “Cupping is a basic method of tasting coffee which is standard across the world. Whether it be Guatemala, Canada, Indonesia, London, Mexico, Kenya – everyone uses this same procedure which is almost a ritual. 5oz of water at 92 degrees is added to 10g of coffee coarsely ground. The coffee then steeps for 5 minutes and then the grinds removed- and the coffee is ready to be analyzed. “

Never knew brewing a cuppa coffee was so technical. πŸ˜›

After coffee, next up on our to-go list in Newtown was Burgerfuel for sweet potato fries with aioli!

They call it Kumara fries with Aioli on the menu. Aioli is a stronger, more pungent version of mayonnaise and is made of garlic, egg and olive oil. I’ve never tried it in Singapore previously but it certainly proved to be a very tasty complement to fries, especially sweet potato fries!

I’ve never tried sweet potato fries in my life either but these are really yummy! It’s the perfect alternative to its oilier counterpart (i.e. french fries) and is a much healthier treat for the health conscious.

Besides food and coffee, Newtown is also home to quaint little shops that line the lively streets. I would love to visit this suburb at night one day, because that’s when the lesbian bars come alive! πŸ˜‰

Bushwalking at the Blue Mountains Grand Canyon Track

August 3, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
As my dear friend Sushi puts it, Australia makes people do weird things. I am the perfect example. I don’t like outdoor activities but so far, I’ve gone on 2 bushwalks (i.e. hiking trips). My most recent bushwalk was at the Blue Mountains Grand Canyon Track.

I have chronic hydrophobia, so crossing streams freak me out big time. If I recall correctly, we had to cross at least 5 streams, not counting the one you see below, which has nicely paved flat rocks for you to step on.

Usually, crossing streams mean we have to step on rocks of all shapes and sizes just to get to the other side.

Yup, like this.

I was told this is an easy bushwalk, but when I checked it up on wildwalks’ website AFTER the walk, the difficulty level is HARD. Trust me to believe friends who are hardcore bushwalkers and campers.

On the brighter side, the lovely view at the bottom of the canyon, coupled with the tranquil and serene environment, made this a very scenic walk.

Compared to Boronia Point, which was where JW brought me on my first trip to Blue Mountains, the terrain here is much less treacherous as well.

Of course, positive thinking always helps. On our way back up to the carpark, we passed through a beautiful waterfall, stopped by to wash our feet in the icy cold water (yes, wearing Keen shoes during winter wasn’t such a good idea after all) and took many pictures while our toes slowly turned purple and fell off.

Fine, our toes are still intact.

So, will I still go for more bushwalks? Hm..possibly, but only if my fellow companions stop undermining the difficulty levels of the various bushwalk tracks!

Charity Sale in Support of UNICEF

August 2, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments
One of my very talented secondary school friends Yiquan converted her watercolour drawings to postcards for sale and the best part is, all proceeds for this sale will go to charity!
Your purchase will go towards supporting UNICEF for their work in providing humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and women in developing countries. The goal of this charity drive is to raise a minimum sum of S$3,000.

The amount may not be very high, but every cent goes a long way and every one of us can make a difference, no matter how small, to the less fortunate all over the world. So, let’s all do our part to make this world a better place! πŸ™‚

Each postcard set consists of 14 postcards with 7 unique drawings. Each set is priced at S$20.

To purchase, please click on the link here
Payment can be made through paypal/credit card.

Here are the rest of the watercolour drawings done by Yiquan. You can also read her inspiration behind each drawing below each picture. πŸ™‚

1) Sailing across the Rainbow Sky

Imagination. Sweeps us across rainbow hued skies to magical lands of incredible adventures – where dreams soar on rose petal wings and everything that can be imagined becomes real. But this wondrous world of imagination and belief often fades and disappears as we grow up.
We forget. We fear. We disbelief.
And β€œthe moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.”

Don’t doubt. Never forget.

For Imagination has the power to transform the world and bring forth a better tomorrow.

2) Lovers’ Bridge

Two little snails met on a bridge, spied on by a mischievous pixie. Somehow, while writing this, I was reminded of the thousands of love padlocks I saw on Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne. I was quite mystified when I first laid eyes on them but the reason soon became apparent when I read all the tiny lovey-dovey messages inscribed on the locks. Well, here’s to everlasting love! ❀

3) Misty Mountain
A week or so back, I climbed my first mountain – Mount Ophir. Standing at 1276m, it sits at the border between Malacca and Muar.

Climbing Mt Ophir was as much a mental challenge as it was a physical one. I learnt to push myself beyond my limits and silence the doubts within me. And after what seemed like forever, my eyes were finally treated to a breathtaking view of wide expanse of land and misty clouds that were almost within reach. Inhaling the fresh mountain air, I was reminded that I share this planet with other beings and that Nature is a gift that should be treasured and protected. However, the biggest reward came from the knowledge that I had conquered myself – the fear, the doubts and the self imposed limitations. Yes, we all want to stand atop a mountain but the joy and growth comes from the journey. And on this journey, I was also lucky to have great companions.

4) Snail Mail

These days, what I find in my mailbox (and I mean the physical one) are mostly just bills and junk mail. On the rare occasion that a card/postcard arrives, my heart leaps a little and I would take the time to study the envelope or the picture on the postcard before savouring every word within the message.

I like how everyone has his/her own unique handwriting – the neat rows of letters like little soldiers standing at attention, the dangerously sloping letters like little drunkards’ half-hearted attempts at defying gravity, the funny curls and swirls, the decorative flourishes …

5) Starry Starry Night

There is something enchanting and enthralling about the night sky. Filled with luminous pin pricks, it seems to hold within it the secrets of the galaxies and the untold wisdom of the Universe.
As a city dweller, the constant light pollution makes it hard to appreciate the full glory of the night sky. Thus, I would always remember the first time I camped out in the Australian wilderness and saw the biggest and brightest stars in my life! And as I sat gazing up at the starry starry sky, a little boy came up to me and pointed out the Southern Cross.

6) Watching Sunrise
I love this sketch! The beach is one of my favourite places though I prefer sunsets. In the sketch, the sky turned out surprisingly well, the colours blending nicely with balancing negative space.

7) My friend

β€œThe best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a [toadstool] with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you’ve ever had.”

Indeed. Oftentimes, as silence interrupts a smooth flowing conversation, there is that anxiety and desperate urge to fill that silence with something. Anything! But constant sound can become noise, easily relegated to the background and ignored. So, when moments of quiet happen, take the time to enjoy and appreciate them together. For in the crevices of sound, thoughts can be born and love strengthened.

Powder Pink and Rosettes

August 1, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments
Pastel and neon hues are the most trendy colours this season. Unlike neon, which is best worn as an accent colour (or you’ll risk being an eyesore literally), I like how pastels can be worn from head to toe.

If you’re interested, click on the posts below to see how I’ve worn pastels previously:

Sorbet Colours

Floral Denim

Colour Blocking with Pastel and Candy Colours

In this post, my top and jeans are in the sweetest shades of pastel pink, but I also decided to add a dash of nude hues to balance out the colour tones as well as to ensure that I don’t end up looking like pink panther!

Hat from Forever New
Pastel pink jeans from Mango
Korean pink sweater from Yuan, Far East Plaza
Rosette jacket from Hong Kong
Accessories from Chanel and Diva
Idylle Speedy from Louis Vuitton

You’ve probably seen most of the items in this outfit, largely because my luggage space was limited and I honestly don’t own that many long sleeve tops and jeans to ride out winter. It is quite a challenge to rework the same pieces to create different looks, but I must say it is pretty fun too.

The only new item that I’ve incorporated in this ensemble is my rosette jacket which I bought from Hong Kong last October, but never found the opportunity to wear it in Singapore’s humid weather.

I like how the chiffon polyester material and pop-up rosettes add interest as well as a touch of vintage girly glamour to the outfit.

Hope you like this outfit as much as I do!

Farewell Dinner for Chloe

July 31, 2012 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
The minute I arrived at Sydney airport 2 weeks back, I was whisked off to Darling Harbour for Chloe’s farewell dinner at Toros Tapas and Bar.

Chloe just graduated and was about to return home to Hong Kong then. Though I got to know Chloe not too long ago, she’s one of the most unassuming people I know and often brings humour to the table. Innocence personified, she comes complete with a heart of gold. πŸ˜‰

I fell in love with Sangria when I tried it in Spain last year, so you can imagine my excitement when we gamely ordered 1 litre of Sangria to share.

For the benefit of those who’re not familiar with the drink, Sangria is basically a wine punch that consists of red wine, sliced fruits and brandy. It’s commonly found in Spain and Portugal. I like it because it’s sweet.

We had tapas for dinner and I especially liked the mussels in white wine sauce. I’m so going to miss the seafood in Sydney when I eventually head home for good.

Thereafter, we adjourned to Lindt Cafe for hot chocolate and waffles. JW was a little tipsy by then and as usual, everyone commented that he’s more fun when he’s drunk!

Some parting shots with Chloe:

Here’s wishing you all the best in your job search and life back in Hong Kong! Keep in touch! πŸ™‚

The Wedge

July 30, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Do you remember Le Monde Cafe? (If you’re interested, click here to read my post) Two of their baristas left in late 2011 to set up their own cafe in Glebe. This cafe is non other than The Wedge.

I love the laid-back, relaxed vibes that percolate every nook and corner of this cafe. It’s tucked away from the main traffic flow that travels down Glebe, providing quiet respite from all the hustle and bustle.

The large windows open up into exposed bar counters, letting in warm bursts of sunlight which are a much welcomed relief from the wintry weather.

I also adore the modern industrial decor topped with a retro touch. The gunnysack look-alike cushions and raw, uneven brick walls lined with retro pictures add character and are quite a visual treat too.

It’s the perfect place for spending a leisurely afternoon chatting over good coffee and healthy but equally delicious food.

Chicken sandwich (Again) – JW eats only chicken, fish and beef most of the time…

My organic blood orange soda, which I personally think tastes better than San Pellegrino.

My toasted sourdough bread with vegemite and butter. This has become a staple for me!

Finally, here’s JW’s beautifully roasted coffee. The Wedge uses Perth’s Five Senses coffee, which is supposedly a superior brew because of the lighter roast.

Skiing and Snowboarding at Perisher

July 29, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments
We had our first ski trip ever at Perisher on Snowy Mountains not too long ago with a group of fun-loving friends. It was so much fun in spite of the cranky cars and continuous blackouts in our apartment. Little hiccups like these tested our patience but also played an important role in spicing up our lives.

Haha, yes, I’m very optimistic indeed.

Anyway, here’s presenting the wonderful people who embarked on this amazing journey with us. There were 3 skiers and 4 snowboarders in total. We didn’t know one another very well prior to this trip, but I’m glad we all got along pretty well.

Call me ignorant, but I never knew that skiing was possible in Australia until recently, and I was truly amazed by the various options available. You can ski at Thredbo and Perisher in NSW, Mount Hotham in Falls Creek or Mount Buller in Victoria. Out of the lot, Thredbo and Perisher are probably the most popular skiing destinations.

We were blessed with fantastic weather throughout our one week stay.
Check out the spectacular view and our snowboarding friends in the foreground!

I observed that most snowboarders were younger and clad in fashionable hip-hop garb, as opposed to the skiiers, who were usually older and more conservatively dressed.

I would love to try snowboarding one day, but the fear of falling accompanied by the physical pain thereafter really scares me. I really applaud our snowboarder friends for their perseverance and courage. LOL!

Our first ski class was terrible as the instructor didn’t dwell very much on the basics (e.g. gliding and braking). I nearly fell on many occasions but I narrowly escaped by some stroke of luck. Phew!

The lessons on the 2nd and 3rd day were significantly better and before long, I could ski, not without some trepidation though. I guess I’m generally more risk averse, so speeding down a slope is not really my kind of thing. I love to be in control, so I guess you could call me a control freak.

JW, on the other hand, is a dare-devil. I had to stop him from going up the higher slopes several times because he likes to stretch his limits and always seems oblivious to danger!

Despite our differences, we ended up enjoying ourselves thoroughly although we never thought we would like skiing.

That said, JW still prefers rockclimbing, but I would love to ski again some time. How I wish I could ski in Singapore, but alas, you and I both know that it’ll only happen in our wildest dreams.

We also took the opportunity to explore the rest of the ski resort by taking the ski lift right up to the top!

The slopes at the top are not meant for skiing but wow, the view was absolutely breath-taking. We literally felt like we were on top of the world.

I think I look like an explorer on Mount Everest or something in this picture, which really cracks me up because that’s the last thing that I’ll ever be!

For the duration of the trip, we stayed at Jindabyne, a quaint little town near Perisher. Our first accommodation was a 4-bedroom cottage facing the lake. It was decorated in the style of the 1970s, but we loved how warm and cozy it was.

Pretty boots all in a row!

Waiting for dinner to be prepared by our chef for the night, Felicia. Haha

Unfortunately, all good things had to come to an end at the stroke of midnight. Just past midnight, we experienced our first blackout, and this was in winter!! The absence of working heaters meant that we were cold to the bones. Thank goodness firewood was readily available.

If you thought that was it, you’re wrong. The blackouts continued for the next 2 days and the frequency only increased with time. We finally decided to throw in the towel and moved to another house provided by the real estate company.

Just look at how chic and modern this house is! We were sold the minute we stepped in. No regrets about moving at all.

Well, no regrets, until JW decided to frighten us with his remarkable apple-slicing techniques.

We took turns to cook breakfast and dinner everyday, but girls and boys, this is a negative demonstration of how you should slice an apple, so please do not try this at home ok? I have no doubt that JW will chop off his fingers one of these days, or even kill someone with that knife, but let’s move on to happier thoughts now, shall we?

To steer those negative thoughts away, let’s look at some food.

Yummy breakfast by Shaun

Pasta lovingly made by Peiyu. I love her carbonara pasta!

We spent a whole week focusing on just skiing and snowboarding, waking up at 7am and sleeping at 10pm everyday. I actually liked the routine very much, which came as a surprise, even to me. At the end of the week, I certainly felt more well-rested than ever before and very toned too, thanks to all the exercise!

Le Monde Cafe

July 27, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments

Coffee is a must before, during and after every meal. Well, for JW at least. I don’t take coffee at all, but I do love checking out cafes and trying out non-caffeinated drinks on the menu. So yay, that makes checking out cafes our shared interest.

I know everyone has heard so much about the cafe culture in Melbourne, but trust me, the cafes in Sydney are just as good. We’ve been hunting down the cafes listed in the Sydney Good Cafe Guide 2012 and so far, the coffee served by these recommended establishments is always rich, fragrant and smooth (JW attests to this), while the food is almost always tasty and flavourful.

Le Monde was one of the cafes on our checklist (it had a 3 cups rating in 2011, which means the coffee here is top notch!) and that was where we headed after breakfast at Bills. Latte is JW’s favourite type of coffee and it’s not difficult to see why.

The glass of creamy caramel goodness capped with an artful leaf design atop a cloud of fluffy floam is enough to make anyone go weak in the knees. I personally like the appearance of coffee. It’s the taste that disagrees with my taste buds for some strange reason.

So what do I settle for then? I usually go for either hot chocolate or salted caramel smoothie. The salted caramel smoothie here is pretty blend and doesn’t quite cut it for me. I much prefer the one at Reuben Hills. If you’re interested, you can also read more about Reuben Hills in my previous post here

The food menu looked interesting but we were way too full from breakfast to stomach anything else. We’ll definitely make a mental note to come back here for a meal though!
