Holiday Plans

As some of you may already be aware, I’m currently on a sabbatical. 😉 That gives me time to refocus on interests, hobbies and people who truly matter to me. I’ll never want to be someone who gets so caught up in the rat race that I forget about what life means to me.

To me, life is about spending time with my loved ones, pursuing my interests and hopefully making a career out of one or more interests that I am passionate about. There are so many things that I want to do and I’ll strive to make this break as fruitful as possible.

Travelling is probably an interest that I can never make a career out of unless I find a job in the tourism industry. I used to travel for work in the previous jobs that I’ve held, but that’s very different from travelling for leisure.

Now, travelling for leisure is precisely what I will be doing for the next 1-2 months. I will be in Europe for a month, followed by US, possibly for 2-3 weeks. I am very excited at the prospect of being out of town for such an extended period of time, and for the first time in years, work will be the last thing on my mind. Correction, it will not even be on my mind at all!

My Europe holiday plans include Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. I intend to continue blogging there whenever my time permits because it has become such an integral part of my life.

Antoinette

Antoinette is another gorgeous cafe housed in an old office building at Penhas Road, right beside Fragrance Hotel. The location may be a little dingy, but rest assured that you will be transported into another world upon entering the cafe.

My eyes lit up the moment I stepped into this hidden gem of a cafe. I was first greeted by a plethora of colourful meringues, cakes and desserts at the entrance, which set my heart a flutter. And as I walked deeper in, an inexplicable sense of familiarity came over me. The beautiful decor, reminiscent of the baroque era, actually resembles that of my favourite cafe in Paris, Angelina.

I read that Antoinette was set up by Chef Pang, the ex-executive pastry chef of Canele and its rating on hungrygowhere.com has always been a perfect score of 100%. Excited to try as many items on the menu as possible, we went on to order 3 breakfast items, thinking that we could finish up everything and still order dessert.

How ambitious of us. In the end, we left without having dessert (what a punishment for being greedy!!:( ) and still had to pack half a crepe home. The same thing happened at Arbite previously, and still, I didn’t learn my lesson. Well, I’m definitely going back for the desserts!

The gratin with tomato fondue and the crepe were good, but the pancakes were divine! It is supremely difficult to find thick, fluffy pancakes in Singapore, and Riders’ Cafe’s pancakes are the closest you could get to that. Much to my disappointment, they have since removed pancakes from their menu. Thanks to Antoinette, I finally have a new favourite cafe for pancakes!

Going Bohemian

Just wanted to share one of my favourite dresses in my wardrobe. It has all the elements that I adore – crochet, scallop hems, flutter sleeves, embroidery and chiffon.

With such intricate details, accessorizing isn’t even necessary! It’s great for days when you’re running late and just want to throw on a frock before darting out of the house.

Loysel’s Toy & Raw Kitchen

I realised there’s an interesting phenomenon in Singapore’s cafe scene recently. Increasingly, more and more cafes are being housed in obscure office buildings located far away from the heart of the city.

In Kampung Bugis alone, there are two quaint cafes in a refurbished standalone office building facing the Kallang River – Loysel’s Toy and Raw Kitchen. I can’t explain it but there’s an alluring old-school charm about this place which I love.

Loysel’s Toy, run by the same people behind Papa Palheta, was named after Edward Loysel de Santais, an engineer in the 1800s who was dedicated to the production of a magnificent coffee machine that made over 1000 cups of coffee an hour. In the same vein, Loysel’s Toy aims to produce a good cup of coffee for every customer.

I’m not a fan of coffee in general, but I was excited to visit Loysel’s Toy because unlike Papa Palheta, they actually serve food here! We were there on a late Tuesday afternoon, but surprisingly, the cafe was so packed that we had to sit outdoors.

Jw is an avid coffee lover and he felt that like Papa Palheta, Loysel Toy’s coffee is excellent!

The chocolate cake here is heavenly! I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. The cake is rich and moist. If I’m not wrong, dark chocolate is used, hence the sweetness is not overwhelming and there is just a slight hint of bitterness. I wolfed down the whole cake, leaving just a small slice for JW. LOL!

Here I was, looking innocent and demure before I gobbled up the cake ravenously. 😛

After that, we ventured to the second floor of the building, where Raw Kitchen is now located.

I fell instantly in love with the decor. Cement floor and walls, put together with wooden and vintage, washed-out furniture create a very comfortable, homely atmosphere.

If you sit beside the grills, you’ll be treated to a breath-taking view of the Kallang River. The breezy, tranquil environment is sure to make you feel right at home.

I ordered prawn pasta with creamy mentaiko sauce. I can’t recall if this is a new item on their menu, because the last time I tried their mentaiko spaghetti at their previous premises during Karen’s birthday, I was bowled over by the wonderful flavours. This time unfortunately, the angel hair pasta tasted a little too dry for my liking. I would love to try the highly raved steak tartare one day though!

I bought this quirky cartoon dress from Bangkok. You can’t see it from the photo above but there are cute little yellow polka dots on the green skirt. 🙂 I love the cute cartoon bear in a pink striped t-shirt. It’s so adorable!

Closet Matterz – Your Closet is all that Matterz

I love experimenting with fashion and I can’t resist the urge to update my wardrobe all the time to keep up with the latest trends.

My work dresses tend to be very well-tailored and structured while my casual dresses are usually either feminine or edgy. Rarely do I get to bag a dress that marries sophistication with casualness without compromising on style.

Well, at least that was the case until I saw this dress from BCBG.

And I was delighted to know that Closet Matterz designed their first manufactured piece, My First Love Cape Dress, after this highly coveted BCBG dress!

I adore the floaty cape-like design and the superb workmanship of the dress. The cutting is very flattering and enhances the overall silhouette.

The best part is, it is so versatile you can wear it for work or for afternoon tea on a weekend. I usually do not like dresses from most blogshops because the material usually makes it inappropriate for work. But this dress is made of quality cotton/ and lycra. Not only is it smooth and comfortable to the touch, the workmanship makes it work-appropriate.

My First Love Cape Dress comes in 5 different colours, but I chose the very striking vermillion because it makes a statement effortlessly.

The dress also comes with a petticoat and belt. The petticoat is made of a soft cotton lycra blend and can be used with other dresses too. I thought that was a very thoughtful gesture because VPLs are definitely a huge no-no. 😉

Vintage Candy Stripes is a lovely casual top made of polyester. I like how it goes well with practically anything. You can tuck it into a pair of shorts, like the Green High Waist Shorts here, which is made of very good quality thick cotton material (comes with a side zip and side pockets too).

Canary Breeze is another top that goes well with the Green High Waist Shorts and is in line with the Colour Blocking trend.

It is made of soft, slightly sheer chiffon material and comes in a cheerful yellow hue. The front of the top can also be tied loosely (as shown below) or tied into a bow depending on your preference.

Peperoni Pizzeria (Binjai Park)

Peperoni is one of my favourite restaurants for dinner simply because their pizzas are one of the best around. Honestly, with the Les Amis brand name under its belt and a 92% rating on hungrygowhere.com, it is pretty hard to go wrong.

Unlike the thick, chewy pizzas that are a dime a dozen, Peperoni serves thin crispy crust pizzas with generous toppings. My favourite would have to be the parma ham and rocket pizza. It is so light and crispy, just like table water crackers topped with quality ingredients. I can easily finish a medium sized pizza all by myself. One of the specialties here is its XXL 21″ pizza, which is absolutely perfect for huge family gatherings! I don’t have pictures here, but their portobello mushrooms are not to be missed as well. 😉

We tried their Lasagna recently. Much to our surprise, it is not overly cheesy like most of the other lasagnas. It has just the right quantity of mozzarella cheese. If you’re a meat lover (like us!), you will be pleased to know that there are copious amounts of minced beef filling to go around.

I also like the casual, laid-back environment. It resembles Billy Bombers in many ways, with retro posters lining the walls and a juke box playing music from the 1960s. The only difference is, Peperoni definitely looks much classier.

Arbite – A Chance Encounter

Arbite was a chance encounter for us. We were on our way to visit Grace and my God-daughter when we decided to make a pit-stop at Serangoon Gardens to grab a quick bite.

In fact, I would have missed the restaurant entirely if it wasn’t for the large signboard right at the entrance where you’ll find a flight of stairs leading to its premises on the 2nd storey.

And that was when my eyes lit up. It is just the type of restaurant that I like. The decor was simple and white-washed, not unlike the usual Scandinavian style of interior design.

It is cozy and unpretentious, a place where you can just be yourself and relax on a lazy weekend. I felt like I was eating at a friend’s place and that is precisely why I like Arbite.

I absolutely adore the collage of pictures on the walls. I’ve always wanted to do up one of the walls in our rooms in this fashion.

Coincidentally, I also bumped into two friends there who frequent the restaurant. They recommended the Grilled Moroccan Chicken for my mains while JW, who loves breakfast food (i.e. bacon, eggs, sausages..you get the drift) went for the Arbite Breakfast.

The food was distinctly flavourful and came in generous portions! The service provided was immaculate as well. Marcus, the owner of the restaurant was professional yet affable, always wearing a smile on his face.

My only grouse was that we were so full at the end of our main courses, we had no more room for dessert! I really wanted to try My Wife’s Chocolate Cake, so that gives me an excuse to drag JW there with me again!

That’s not much of a grouse, is it? LOL. I will certainly be back soon!

Goodwood Park Hotel, Gaia Restaurant & Thai Express

Not too long ago, Jo and I met up on a whim so that we could photograph each other in our ClubCouture attire (see previous post for photos!). We decided to meet at Goodwood Park Hotel because it has such a majestic visage, almost magical in fact.

Just in case you were wondering why our summer style photos didn’t seem to reflect the grandeur of the hotel, alas, it only looks beautiful from afar and its interior gave us nothing to shout about. Silly us thought we could somehow incorporate the building’s visage into our photos while capturing the beauty of our clothes!

Anyhow, we did capture someone’s attention. While taking photos of ourselves outside the hotel, we caught the attention of a gentleman who happened to be the owner of Gaia restaurant. He thought we were tourists at first, but his friendliness didn’t wane even after he found out that we were just two vain Singaporean girls engrossed in cam whoring.

He very kindly offered to take photos of us and then invited us into his restaurant for a drink on the house! We were too embarrassed to take up his offer of coffee so we settled for iced water instead. 😉

Crocheted Dress in Pink from ClubCouture

We were so touched by his warmth and hospitality, we decided to get his namecard so that we could dine in his restaurant on another occasion when we were more appropriately attired.

Instead, Jo and I found a quiet spot at Thai Express Paragon because we had some clandestine plans to discuss. You will find out what these plans are in due course, but until then, I will have to keep you in suspense! 😉

Summer Style 2011

The weather this summer has been a little unpredictable. It can be scorching hot today but raining cats and dogs the very next day.

Whatever the weather brings, a pop of colour always chases the gloom away. I always start with my favourite colour, pink.

By now, you would probably have guessed that the colour blocking trend is also my favourite summer trend because it is so easy to style and the cheerful kaleidoscope of colours never fails to make my day.

Here’re some of the summer styles that I personally dig.

1) Crochet – Crocheted Dress in Pink

I love the crochet details on this dress, which happens to be in line with the recent crochet trend too. This breezy number is perfect for lounging around and chilling out with your girlfriends on hot summer days. This dress is a steal at just S$29!

I paired my dress with mustard yellow suede heels from Zara.

Mustard seems to complement pink pretty well, such that both colours can shine without stealing the limelight from each other.

2) Chiffon Tops – Flared Chiffon Top in Pink

For unbearably hot days, you will definitely spot me in a comfortable camisole and shorts. I picked this top from ClubCouture because it exudes femininity and is so versatile it can be styled in various ways.

In this instance, I layered my top with a tube underneath and matched it with… yes, you guessed it, mustard shorts. 😉

3) Creamy Whites – Tiered ruffled dress in cream
