Barcelona: Moo Restaurant

October 27, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Moo Restaurant is a one-Michelin star restaurant at Omm Hotel in Barcelona. Having heard so many wonderful things about Spanish food, we had to give it a try!

This restaurant is highly recommended by Quotient TravelPlanner, our travel planner which provides private customized travel. πŸ™‚

Our impression of the restaurant was sealed even before our meals were served. The cozy minimalist decor and warm, attentive service were all it took to make us happy.

And of course, we were over the moon when the food was served.

This slice of lightly toasted cheese bread was so delicious I could eat up an entire loaf if not for the fact that I had to save some space for my main course.

The entrees were beyond spectacular. It was here that we had our first taste of molecular gastronomy.

We were on cloud nine, popping in these little cubes into our mouths and waiting for the explosion of flavours as they burst inside our mouths, releasing such juicy goodness that is only fit for a king.

The foamy egg white and salmon roe concoction was divine. Even JW, who usually shuns fish roe, savoured every spoonful of it.

Then, it was time for our main course. I had the red mullet with tomato confit and pepper broth.

The skin is pan fried to crispy perfection while the meat is so soft and tender it melts in your mouth – a wonderful combination that tantalized my taste buds to no end.

JW had the veal tenderloin with herbal butter. The juicy, succulent meat is the highlight of this dish. The meat is amazingly tender, almost to the point that it dissolves in your mouth without chewing.

Check out the generous serving of herb butter, the perfect accompaniment to the mouth-watering veal tenderloin.

Finally, we had the white chocolate souffle with red fruits for dessert. Unlike the usual souffles, the outer layer of this white chocolate souffle is made up of a thin, crispy white chocolate wafer, which forms a protective layer over the creamy white chocolate mousse. It was so yummy!!

As if dessert was not sweet enough, we were treated to candies and chocolates to end the entire meal on an even sweeter note.

We were so satisfied with the meal we’ll definitely head back to Moo Restaurant on our next visit to Barcelona!

And Fall is Here

September 23, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments

I’ve been travelling for a month now and dressing up everyday, especially when I’m transitioning between summer and autumn, can be a real challenge. I could be in shorts one day and all wrapped up the next day because of the crazy weather.

Temperatures can vary very drastically from city to city too. There was one point in Slovakia when I even had to pull out my winter trench because it was freezing cold! Brrr…and the funniest thing was, when I reached Hungary the next day, it was summer all over again!

Here’s one of my get-ups for the fall season:

Black turtle neck blouse from Uniqlo

Denim skinny jeans from Mango

Cowl scarf from H&M

Tote bag from Prada

Nude patent wedged boots from Far East Plaza

I had just arrived in Cesky Krumlov from Prague where it rained in the morning (read: massive temperature drop alert!!). It was hot and sunny when I took these photos and I was getting all these curious stares from passersby who probably thought I was from outer space. LOL

Needless to say, I changed out of my outfit the minute I reached my hotel room! πŸ˜›

Prague Polka Dots

September 17, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
I’m sorry I haven’t been updating as frequently, but I’ve been so overwhelmed by the sights and happenings around me. I’m currently in the Czech Republic, where I visited Prague and am now in Cesky Krumlov, a beautiful town that is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. I’ll blog about the attractions I visited in Barcelona and Prague separately when I have better wifi connection and more time on my hands. Of course, I will also be replying your comments soon. I love reading them so do keep them coming!

For now, I’ll leave you with an outfit shot in Prague. πŸ™‚ Don’t be deceived by these photos on the iconic Charles Bridge. The bridge looks practically empty here, but truth be told, the maddening crowd in Prague almost drove me crazy because I couldn’t admire the beauty of the city in its entirety without having to elbow through truckloads of tourists!

Polka dot tunic from Far East Plaza

Nude patent wedged boots from Far East Plaza

Ribbon bag from Naraya

Rosette ribbon hair clip from Ching, Far East Plaza

This polka dot tunic is one of my favourite pieces for travelling. It doesn’t crease at all, is lightweight and thus perfect for hotter days. It is also great for layering when temperatures nosedive.

Have a great weekend everybody! Meanwhile, there’ll be more outfit shots coming your way. πŸ˜‰

A Day in Alquezar, Spain

September 9, 2011 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
Yesterday, we drove 30km out of Rodellar to another town by the name of Alquezar. It is a medieval city listed as a historical site in Spain.

Don’t you feel like you’ve been transported back in time? πŸ˜‰ Images of castles, kings, queens, knights and princesses came to my mind immediately. Playing make-believe has never been easier!

I love taking photos of dazzling sun rays peeking out from tree branches. So pretty!

Before we continued touring the town, we stopped by Narbona restaurant for lunch and an extended tea break thereafter. We had yummy cordon bleu for our main courses (we took the kid’s meal cos the portions are huge!). At 2 euros, you can also get yourself a glass of sangria, which is the same price as what a coke or coffee would cost!

Over here, the siesta starts from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, and families would gather for long, leisurely lunches together. Wish we could do that in Singapore too, where work-life balance is more of a myth, don’t you think? Unless you’re self-unemployed like yours truly. πŸ˜‰

After filling our tummies with sangria and oily fried food, we climbed up to the highest point of the town, where the Santa Maria La Mayor castle-collegiate church is. This church used to be a Muslim castle until it was conquered by the King of Aragon in the 1600s.

The gold plating and coloured wood carvings are well-preserved in its original glory, which is pretty amazing for something so ancient!

The Romanesque pillars also remind me of a romantic scene from the movie Great Expectations, where the child leads locked lips over a drinking fountain.

The mesmerizing view atop the clock tower of Santa Maria collegiate-church.

We spent the rest of our time walking through the pebbled streets and charming architecture of medieval origins.

Here’s what I wore to battle the sweltering heat.

Lace Ribbon Camisole from Forever New

White denim shorts from H&M

Along the way back, we passed by El Puente, a campsite with a beautiful arched bridge against the captivating backdrop of Sierra de Guara just as the sun was setting.

Sigh..I’m so gonna miss this place!!!!

Byebye Rodellar, and hello Barcelona.

Memories of Rodellar

September 8, 2011 by Regina Chow 6 Comments
After staying in Rodellar for close to 2 weeks, I think I’ll miss this place when we leave for Barcelona soon.
This is where I accomplished many personal firsts. Pretty astonishing, not just for myself, but for others who know me well too, because everything that I did here is completely out of character for me.

1) I had my first hiking experience here (4 hikes actually!) and enjoyed it thoroughly despite having to fend off bees/flies and balance on rocky paths that threaten to give way any time.

I even crossed the streams twice! I think I did mighty well for someone who’s afraid of water. πŸ˜‰

2) I belayed JW for the first time in my life! That’s no mean feat cos I’ve never belayed him or anybody for that matter, not even in the indoor rockclimbing gyms in Singapore and Malaysia.

Check out my harness. LOL! Cool or what?

Pls pardon the hideous shoes. Obviously they don’t belong to me. πŸ˜›

The second time I belayed JW, I nearly flew off the cliff when he swung outwards like a pendulum while coming down an inclined section of the rock formation. Luckily, there was a huge rock behind me, so I clung onto it for my dear life, not without first screaming my lungs out and making a scene!

Besides getting laughed at by the seasoned climbers around me, I also sustained a humungous bruise on my left leg and some scratches. So embarrassing! πŸ™ I’m surprised I agreed to belay him for a grand total of 8 other climbs!

3) It was my first time staying in a rural European town, which is something I’ve always wanted to do although I’m very much a city girl.

There’s just something about the fresh air, the untainted scenery and the lack of amenities that makes it inexplicably attractive and almost magical.

So, will I come back to Rodellar again? I would, but I would probably think twice about belaying my husband again. πŸ˜›

Huesca: Capital City of Aragon Province in Spain

September 3, 2011 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

There are a few towns near Rodellar but we drove all the way to the capital city of Huesca for a spot of sightseeing and grocery shopping. With a population of about 50000 (but it seems we only saw a maximum of 500 people walking around LOL!!), Huesca is one of the least populated province capitals in all of Spain.
Every time I go to a city or country that I’ve never been to before, I would make it a point to visit the museum to have a better understanding of the history and culture. The Museum of Huesca is an archaeology and art museum which displays artifacts that have been discovered in the province. Unfortunately, everything is in Spanish and there are no English translations. Also, the guard was so vigilant it was quite impossible for me to take any photos.
The only person who spoke English was the staff at the Tourism centre, who was very enthusiastic about introducing us to all the places of attraction in Huesca. He also pointed us to the pedagogy museum located within the tourism centre as well as the oldest grocery shop in Spain, La Confianza.
Set up in 1871, La Confianza, which means trust in Spanish, has for sale a smorgasbord of candies, preserved fruits, meat and groceries. The shop is adorned with intricately designed shelves, antique ornaments and old school posters.

If you ever stop by Huesca, do check out La Confianza at:

Plaza del Mercado 7, Huesca. Telephone: 34-974-222-632

Rodellar: Hiking, Climbing, Belaying

September 1, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Hiking is the only way to enjoy the scenery in Rodellar, which is located in the northeast of Aragon province in Spain (doesn’t it remind you of Lord of the Rings?). The hiking trails are pretty treacherous by Singapore’s standards as the terrain is very steep and rocky. There are no barriers too, so if you lose your footing, off the canyon you go. Well, but I guess that adds to the thrill of it all. πŸ˜‰

The amazing thing is, we came across many children who are barely 8-10 years old hiking effortlessly alongside their parents, which really put me to shame. There were many occasions when I had to go down on all fours, just like a dog, because my shoes were a tad too big for me and I was afraid of losing my balance. πŸ˜›

We made it all the way down the canyon to an area called Bikini, which is apparently the most accessible area for climbing. As most of the climbers here do not speak English, I ended up belaying JW. I think I did well considering that it was my first time after 2 years. Looks like I’m well on track to becoming his belay slave for the rest of the trip.

Besides climbing, swimming is a popular activity too. There were so many bikini clad babes and half-naked hunks walking around, it is no wonder they decided to name this place Bikini. Regardless of the type of scenery you’re looking for, rest assured that Rodellar does not disappoint on all fronts. πŸ˜‰

Tomorrow is my next hiking day, and I sure am looking forward to it! πŸ˜›

Spain (Rodellar) – Refugio Kalandraka

August 29, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments

We arrived at Rodellar yesterday after driving 300km. It was quite a harrowing experience as we were unfamiliar with the roads and made wrong turns around the one million roundabouts in Spain.

But when we finally turned into Rodellar, after maneuvering on the narrow mountain trails meant for 2-way traffic, we realised how gratifying it was to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Gorgeous architecture, stone houses and a picturesque view of the mountains were just some of the beautiful sights that took our breath away.

Here’s presenting our quaint little cottage, our home for the next two weeks. It looks like something that came out of Heidi. I can imagine sheep running about the large expanse of greenery, but in reality, there are countless numbers of huge dogs instead.

This is what I wake up to every morning, coupled with the fresh mountain air and invigorating cool breeze. I could get used to this except that there isn’t hot water for bathing at all!

Check out the Scandinavian decor of our little lodge. It is surprisingly homely and cozy.

The bed is super comfortable too and the weather is so cool, there is no need for any air-conditioning. I can spend practically the whole day just rolling in bed and doing absolutely nothing. LOL.

Have a great week ahead! I don’t know what I’ll be doing yet but I hope I don’t end up as a belay slave to JW. Haha!

Austria (Innsbruck): Seegrube Mountain

August 6, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
As I was looking through some videos that I took in the past, I found a short clip of my visit to Seegrube Mountain in Innsbruck, Austria.

The breath-taking view was so captivating, we spent several hours just admiring the beauty of mother nature while sipping on hot chocolate.

It felt like heaven on earth. I can’t wait to do this again when we head over to Europe. πŸ˜‰

Have a good weekend everyone!

Holiday Plans

July 30, 2011 by Regina Chow 5 Comments
As some of you may already be aware, I’m currently on a sabbatical. πŸ˜‰ That gives me time to refocus on interests, hobbies and people who truly matter to me. I’ll never want to be someone who gets so caught up in the rat race that I forget about what life means to me.
To me, life is about spending time with my loved ones, pursuing my interests and hopefully making a career out of one or more interests that I am passionate about. There are so many things that I want to do and I’ll strive to make this break as fruitful as possible.

Travelling is probably an interest that I can never make a career out of unless I find a job in the tourism industry. I used to travel for work in the previous jobs that I’ve held, but that’s very different from travelling for leisure.

Bratislava, capital of Slovakia (source: Wikipedia)
Beautiful Prague, capital of Czech Republic (source: Wikipedia)

Now, travelling for leisure is precisely what I will be doing for the next 1-2 months. I will be in Europe for a month, followed by US, possibly for 2-3 weeks. I am very excited at the prospect of being out of town for such an extended period of time, and for the first time in years, work will be the last thing on my mind. Correction, it will not even be on my mind at all!

My Europe holiday plans include Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. I intend to continue blogging there whenever my time permits because it has become such an integral part of my life.

For sponsors/online retailers who are interested, I’ll be happy to do advertorials complete with photos of your products against the backdrop of the countries that I’ll be visiting. Just drop me a note at regina.chow@gmail.com. πŸ˜‰

Before I end off, I would like to share this beautiful song recommended by Lady Ayn Rose. It has since become my favourite song too. πŸ™‚

Have a good weekend everyone! πŸ˜€

**Edited to add: I’ll still be in town till end Aug!! Blog updates will continue, even when I’m away. πŸ˜‰
