Making a Statement with Statement Jewellery

March 4, 2013 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
I’ve taken a
liking towards statement jewellery and I’ve been trying my hand at
layering them in different ways. For a person who doesn’t own that many
pieces of jewellery, this can be a rather daunting affair.
Beautifying your wrists is probably the easiest way to start experimenting with statement jewellery. I’ve seen how fashionistas and celebs alike have gone all the way with layers of chunky bracelets and bangles, but given my tiny wrists, I prefer to keep the look simple with just 2 bangles.
Mini gold spiked bangle from CC Skye (You can get this from Shopbop)
Strangely, I am a little more adventurous when it comes to necklaces and I love how they instantly add panache to a bare neckline, transforming my otherwise plain attire into a glamorous ensemble!
This was my first attempt at layering necklaces. The baroque choker was from Vera Moda during my work trip to Beijing some time back, the spiked crystal necklace and long bauble chain were gifts.

This is my chunkiest statement necklace to date. I love how it dresses up the neckline so effortlessly. The amazing thing about this is despite its chunky appearance, it is surprisingly light as a feather!
Here’s yet another statement necklace that I acquired recently from a supplier. I had an additional piece which I put up for sale on instagram and it was sold in minutes!

Besides necklaces and arm candies, my attention has turned towards statement rings as well. One of the rings I love most is the YSL arty ring, which has probably found a place in every self-respecting fashionista’s home to date. I don’t own one yet unfortunately, but I’ve got my eye on another ring, the Angelica ring from Lucien Elements.
All the colours are incredibly captivating, don’t you think? πŸ™‚

New Additions to My Skincare Routine

February 24, 2013 by Regina Chow 6 Comments

I’ve been using a number of newly discovered facial products for a few months now, and I thought I’d share the products that worked for me. I don’t usually like to try new products on my face, but I succumbed to these after my friends strongly recommended them to me, and I’m happy to report that I’m pretty impressed with these products!

1) Likas Papaya Skin Whitening Herbal Soap

The most unexpected find among this stash of new products which I’ve incorporated into my daily routine is the Likas Papaya Skin Whitening Herbal Soap, recommended by my good friend Veron.
At just over S$2 (yes, you’re not seeing things here!), Likas hails from the Philippines and is well-known for being the country’s first organic herbal soap. It is enriched with natural papaya enzymes to whiten your skin and can be used on your face and body. I’ve been using this soap as a facial wash everyday and I like how it makes my skin feel so smooth and clean thereafter. I was darker when I first used it thanks to my New Zealand holiday (everyone asked if I got a tan on purpose!), but now I’m almost as fair as before!
For those who are interested, you can find this in any of the shops selling Filipino products at Lucky Plaza.

2) St Ives Green Tea Scrub

Besides the Likas soap, I’ve also been using this St Ives’ Green Tea Scrub which I bought from Sydney before heading back to Singapore for good.

I’ve been trying to cut back on products that are artificially enhanced by chemicals, and this paraben-free scrub totally fits the bill. This green tea scrub is meant for acne prone skin but it’s great for preventing spots too. The tiny exfoliating beads are very gentle on the skin, which means that the scrub can be used on a daily basis to stimulate cell renewal. If your skin is sensitive, then it’s probably best to just use it once a week. My sis-in-law was the one who uncovered this gem of a scrub when she went over to Sydney to visit us. I haven’t been able to find this green tea scrub in Singapore, so if you know where I can find this, please let me know!
I switch between the Likas soap and this St Ives scrub everyday. Sometimes, I’ll even use them together. I know it sounds harsh to double cleanse like this, but I find that this method has been effective in keeping my skin zit-free. This routine also helps to even out my skin tone. That’s the reason why I no longer require tinted sunscreens. Now, I just dab on my Jane Ardell powder sunscreen (which is translucent) and I’m all ready to face the world!
3) Etude House Daily Masks

I know there are
many brands of sheet masks around. I’ve tried a number of them and some
are either too rich, which leaves your skin with a sticky after-feel,
while others just didn’t have much effect on my skin. Well, that was until I tried Etude House’s masks.

Grace first got me hooked onto Etude House’s Daily Masks when she got me a pack of the ginseng masks as a gift. Each box comes with 20 sheet masks and I’ve since finished my first box. There’re three different types of masks to target different problems such as whitening, hydrating or acne. I’m now on my 2nd box and I’ve decided to give the yeast and Vit C masks a try this time.
The yeast and vitamin C masks are meant for acne control, skin tone correction and anti-aging. I was drawn to this for its whitening and anti-aging properties, and I love how supple my skin feels after masking. Yeast has oil-control properties, which is good for acne prone skin or if you have oily skin/T-zone like me. Vitamin C has whitening and anti-ageing properties, which is great for maintaining your skin texture and reducing the appearance of fine lines.
These 3 products that I shared today are probably the most inexpensive skincare products that I own, but in terms of efficacy, I can safely say that they have surpassed many of my more expensive skincare items.
Whoever said that good things don’t come cheap certainly didn’t know what he/she was talking about! πŸ˜‰

Year of the Snake Outfit

February 15, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I’ve been hunting high and low for a yellow or green tulle skirt for the longest time and funnily enough, I came across one that I really liked when I was shopping for a friend’s baby at Gingersnaps. Gingersnaps may be a children’s boutique, but its Raffles City outlet stocks the same clothes in larger sizes (up to 14 years old). Needless to say, I got myself this pretty little tulle skirt in the largest size.

You can’t see it here, but the hems are manicured with a row of rosettes which gives the skirt an added flounce. I felt just like a ballerina!

Skirt: Gingersnaps
Accessories: Hermes and Elitrend
Bag: Forever New

Yellow is supposed to bring my Chinese zodiac sign good luck in the year of the Snake, so it was only natural that I wore this skirt on the first day of Chinese New Year. Besides, yellow, I’ve been wearing a lot of black. Contrary to popular belief that one should wear bright, vibrant colours for Chinese New Year, black is apparently another lucky colour that bodes well for me this year. I guess that works well to my advantage since 80% of my work wardrobe is made up of black and grey pieces. Don’t take me too seriously though, I just find these predictions very entertaining and since there is no harm in abiding by these “rules”, I thought, why not?

What about you? What are your lucky colours for the year of the Snake?

Jardin de Fleurs Event at the Singapore Turf Club

February 12, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments

A
couple of weekends ago, I was invited to the Singapore Turf Club’s Jardin de Fleurs event, organized by One9Ninety. Felicia happened to be
back in Singapore for her school holidays so I invited her along as my
plus one. She was my trusty lunch buddy back in Sydney and it was great
catching up with her again!

Dress: ClubCouture
Floral headband and vintage tapestry bag: Sydney Glebe Market
Shoes: Korean
As
the theme of the event suggests, all the ladies turned up in feminine
floral dresses while the men donned edgy floral shirts. There were so many eye candies around, it was quite a
sight to behold!
  What
was even more amazing was how the function room (Sage Room) was done
up. Every table was adorned with beautiful flower bouquets. Even the
walkway leading up to the room was sprinkled with flowers. Very
impressive indeed.

It was a feast not only for our eyes, but our stomachs too, as we indulged in a sumptuous buffet.
In fact, if you’re looking for a venue to host networking parties, team building or corporate events, the Singapore Turf Club might just be the perfect spot. The myriad of room choices are designed to accommodate different types of events and group sizes! Coupled with the adrenalin rush you’ll get from the races, the Singapore Turf Club certainly aims to please. πŸ˜‰

More details can be found here.
If you were wondering why we were looking on so intently, this is the reason:

I love watching the horses parade around the square in their best attire, although some may not be at their best behaviour. But I guess that’s all part of the fun, isn’t it?

I also had the opportunity to catch up with Jessie from the Singapore Turf Club! She’s the sweetest lady around and it’s always fun chatting with her. πŸ™‚
Before the afternoon came to an end, we wasted no time in maximising the use of the photo booth, which in my opinion, is a must-have at every event. We received the polaroid versions instantly and they make such lovely momentos!

The photos that you see here are the high res versions kindly provided by One9Ninety. πŸ™‚

 With Fel
 With Jessie
With Fel and new friend, Vikki

 Us and the Ninja Girls!

Us with Smith and Eunice from One9Ninety. πŸ™‚ They’re hilarious!
With the rest of the One9Ninety ladies!
Thank you so much for the invitation!

Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner at Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant

February 11, 2013 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
How are your Chinese New Year celebrations coming along? After a week of gorging on rich, sinful delicacies which started a week before the actual reunion dinner, all I’m craving now is a bowl of plain Teochew porridge to clean my palate. Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate the finer things in life, especially when it comes to food, but sometimes, too much of a good thing can be too excessive for me. πŸ˜‰

This year, the reunion dinner with my in laws was held at Ah Yat Seafood at Turf City. Despite being very packed, the food quality was not compromised and every dish turned out really well. I found the octopus appetizer and the shark’s fin soup exceptionally flavourful.
Jw and I are not fans of abalone because the rubbery texture just doesn’t cut it for us. I think the older folks appreciate this dish much more than the younger generation. Perhaps we really can’t appreciate the finer things in life after all. LOL
True to its name, Ah Yat seafood certainly boasts a wide array of fresh, succulent seafood. The prawns were sweet, juicy and crunchy. Every bite brought tears of joy to my eyes. Ok I admit I’m exaggerating just a little. πŸ˜›
The Garoupa was delicious! The meat was cooked to perfection with a mildly sweet, delicate flavour. Just thinking about it makes me salivate. I know, I claimed that after all that feasting, all I want now is a bowl of porridge, but isn’t this the perfect complement to a bowl of plain porridge too? πŸ™‚
It’s a yearly tradition for us to take a group photo after every reunion dinner, and this year was no exception. In place of my elder sis-in-law who’s on holiday overseas (how envious I am!), we had the honour of having my younger sis-in-law’s boyfriend join us for the dinner. πŸ˜‰
Finally, here’s my outfit of the day. I wore a cat motif shirt with a poufy lace cut-out skirt from my Bangkok trip some time ago. I’ve been collecting anything and everything with cat motifs because they’re so adorable!
Shoes: Salvatore Ferragamo
Bag: Dip Drops
Socks: Gift from Shihui

Vanilla Mood: In Her Mood

January 29, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I’ve been so caught up with work, catching up with family and friends as well as unpacking (5 suitcases down to 1 now!) that I haven’t had time to sit down and write a proper blog post. Well, now that most of my spring cleaning is done, it’s about time I ended my little hiatus!

I’ve been very active on Instagram these days, and for those of you who follow me at reginachow_sg, you might have noticed that I recently received a beautifully wrapped parcel courtesy of Vanilla Mood.

Vanilla Mood is a sister brand of ClubCouture. If you love romantic lace and floral pieces (like me!), you’ll definitely be in for a treat, because Vanilla Mood stocks an amazing selection of sweet, feminine apparel. It is currently based in Bangkok, but if anything catches your fancy, all you have to do is to drop them an email at hello@vanillamood.me and they’ll be happy to ship it to you, wherever you are!

Lace top: Vanilla Mood
Bangle: Hermes
Bag: Loewe
Jacket: F21
Earrings: Forever New

I had a hard time taking my pick from their  In Her Mood collection because I would personally wear every single item in that collection. I eventually decided on a dainty lace top which you see here and I absolutely adore how the delicate white lace material stands out so beautifully against the black collar and sleeve trimmings.

Keeping the look simple and clean was my objective here, and what better way to do it than with a black asymmetrical faux leather skirt, my trusty Loewe bag and pumps from Australian label, Basque. Since I’ve been wearing way too much black, grey and white lately, I couldn’t resist injecting a splash of colour with a silk foral blazer from Forever 21.
The black collar, juxtaposed against the floral lapels, creates an interesting contrast and for some reason, the pairing of floral and lace always has a mood-lifting effect on me. Does it have the same effect on you? πŸ˜‰

I’ll be back soon with more backdated posts, so do watch this space! πŸ™‚

Chye Seng Huat Hardware

January 9, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments
Those of you who have been to Australia would know about its highly raved coffee culture. I’m not just talking about cafes, but good coffee, which is hard to come by in Singapore. Thankfully, I heard that Chye Seng Huat Hardware serves excellent coffee. Given that it was set up by the same people who established Papa Palheta, JW and I had high hopes for its coffee.
Chye Seng Huat is housed within an old shophouse where one would least expect to find a cafe. Don’t be fooled by its shabby exterior though, for you will be surprised by its modern industrial decor, which completes the cafe’s chic, cozy vibe.

The key to great coffee lies in the barista’s skills. I may not be an avid coffee drinker, but I do enjoy watching the baristas hard at work. If you’re like me, you’ll love the counter seats here.

JW ordered a latte while I had their homemade lemonade. Both were good! To my surprise, JW exclaimed that the coffee here is just as good as what he was used to in Sydney.  Although I thought it would be a waste to taste his latte as my tastebuds tend to be rather undiscerning when it comes to coffee,  I decided to give it a go. My verdict? I was impressed! The coffee was rich, aromatic and smooth. If you’re a coffee lover, this is definitely THE place to go!
As I was feeling a little peckish, we ordered french toast to share. It was pretty decent although it may not be the best that I’ve tried. I’ll give it top marks for presentation alone!

I’m sure we’ll be heading down to Chye Seng Huat again soon. If you’re yearning for a cup of good coffee, I would highly recommend that you try out this place for your coffee fix!

My Face Make-up Products

January 5, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
After I shared that I’ve stopped using powder foundation on my face, I started receiving enquiries about the face make-up that I am currently using. Today, I’ll share more about these products with you. πŸ™‚
1. Jane Iredale’s Powder Me SPF 30 (Translucent)

My skincare routine has not changed in years (I use DRx products) but in place of their tinted sunscreen, I have switched to Jane Iredale’s Powder Me SPF. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked DRx’s sunscreen, but the thick texture made my face look greasy all the time when I’m in Singapore. However, it is great for drier climates as it is very moisturizing, hence I would still use it when I travel.

Jane Iredale’s Powder Me SPF, as the name suggests, is a powder sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. It’s actually skincare, as it is made of Titanium Dioxide (as with all sunscreens) and a unique clay that contains minerals to nourish the skin. Karen first recommended this product to me and I fell in love with it the moment I tried it on. I use this like any other powder, after primer and concealer, before applying blusher. There is no greasy after-feel and the best part is, it is water resistant, made of natural ingredients and doesn’t clog pores at all! This product is highly recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as well. My mother-in-law bought this for me from her regular facial salon. You can also check out their official facebook page for more information on where to get their products in Singapore.

2. Loreal BaseMagique

Loreal BaseMagique is great for minimizing imperfections such as pores and fine lines. You can use this all over your face alone or under make-up, but I only use this on my undereye circles before concealer. Not only does it help the concealer to go on smoothly, it also ensures that eye make-up lasts longer without caking. I have tried this on my forehead as well, where I’ve got some fine lines, and lo and behold, the lines vanished miraculously upon application!
3. MAC Blusher and Mineralize Skinfinish Make-up

I use MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Medium Dark for contouring my cheekbones, jawline and forehead. I also use MAC’s sheertone blusher in Pinch O’ Peach. This is the last step of my face make-up. πŸ™‚ I generally like MAC products as they are very pigmented.
4. YSL Touch E’clat and Ettusais Medicated Acne Real Concealer

I turn to my Ettusais medicated concealer on days when I have small zits as it has healing properties and SPF 12. I also like that it’s extremely versatile! I use it together with YSL’s Touche Eclat in shade no. 1 to conceal my dark eye circles as well, and this formula seems to work pretty well for now.

So there you have it, a list of all my face make-up products!

Streetdirectory Mobile App: Singapore Maps

November 30, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Streetdirectory.com is no stranger to Singaporeans. Singapore may be a small island, but thanks to the addition of new roads and changing traffic conditions, it’s always useful to check out how to navigate from Point A to B in the shortest possible time!

Now, with Streetdirectory’s latest app, Singapore Maps, all iPhone and Android phone users can enjoy the convenience of road navigation with the touch of a finger! Road directions aside, the Singapore Maps app also comes with a slew of brand new features that promises greater user satisfaction and ease of usage!
Here are two new features that I find particularly useful:
1. Offline Maps
This new feature that enables you to download street maps of not just Singapore, but that of Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Philippines too! Internet access is not required, so you’ll always know exactly where you are and where you’re heading to. That means you’ll never get lost when you’re overseas. πŸ™‚
2. Business Directory
Looking for the nearest restaurant or the location of a particular hair salon? The information is now right at your fingertips! Just click on the “Directory” tab and you’ll find a comprehensive list of businesses categories to help you with your search process.

I particularly love the Women category, which is further broken down into subcategories that cater to your every whim and fancy!

The Singapore Maps app allows you to make free calls to businesses that are listed in their database. Need to ask a question or make a reservation? All you need to do is leave your number and you’ll receive a call from the store.
The app also
automatically maps the store’s location on your street map, which means
you can immediately locate the store and get directions there! Talk about convenience!
3. Sharing Tips

Getting timely traffic updates or reviews on the latest deals/stores/food has never been easier with the Tips tab. You can also share pictures, comments and your location with friends. I especially like the up-to-date traffic alerts. Now, I’ll always know which roads to avoid when I’m in a hurry!

Mentaiko Pasta

November 21, 2012 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

I haven’t been cooking much in Australia, but ever since I tried the mentaiko pasta at Porcorosso, I’ve been curious about the possibility of making it on my own. This isn’t much of a recipe actually because lazy me would never make sauce from scratch. I went to the Asian supermarket to get prepacked mentaiko sauce just to try it out.
Each pack (priced at A$4.20) comes with mentaiko sauce and seaweed (2 packets each) and makes a great meal for two!
I tend to be very picky about the texture of my pasta, so these are the steps that I would usually take to ensure my pasta tastes exactly the way I like it:
Step 1: Boil pasta in water together with a dash of sea salt and olive oil
Step 2: Drain pasta with strainer the minute it is cooked, douse it in cold water before draining it again
Step 3: Finally, fry pasta with butter in the pan together with prawns
What I love about the prepacked mentaiko sauce is, after cooking your pasta, all you have to do is mix in the sauce (without cooking), top it off with the seaweed provided and voila, you’re done!

The verdict? This recipe promises to tantalize your tastebuds with every bite, even if you weren’t a mentaiko fan to begin with! JW
is now a mentaiko pasta convert, and as for me, I would never splurge on
another plate of mentaiko pasta at a restaurant again!
Trust me, this home-cooked mentaiko pasta tastes just as good, if not better. πŸ˜‰
