Riders Cafe & Octa Cafe

May 19, 2010 by Regina Chow 6 Comments
In a food paradise like Singapore, it is no wonder that gatherings always take place in cafes and restaurants in the company of glorious food.
Karen, Jolene and I have been talking about having brunch at Riders Cafe for eons before we finally made it there successfully one fine Sunday morning, undeterred by the scorching sun and sweltering heat.
After all,who could resist the temptation of having a meal in a quiet respite amidst lush greenery and galloping horses, away from the concrete jungle.
Be enveloped by Mother Nature as you enjoy a delicious breakfast/brunch in the comfort of warm service and flowing conversations.

We were famished by the time we arrived at Riders. Karen and I ordered iced chocolate, which unfortunately turned out mediocre as it was basically just a mixture of chocolate milk and Hershey’s chocolate syrup.

JW and Karen had pancakes for their mains. The light and fluffy pancakes topped with creamy butter, whipped cream and fresh blueberries were absolutely gratifying and a joy to devour! I already have my sights set on this for my next visit.

Jolene and I had the Riders Breakfast Set. This is the usual set that I order on the rare occasions when I do manage to crawl out of bed in time for brunch on a Sunday.

I relish the crunch of the bacon which goes so well with the runny yoke of the sunny-side up eggs. The savoury potatoes, baked beans and buttered toast with jam also add texture and variety to the overall taste. This is absolutely divine!

I also brought along a very thoughtful belated birthday gift from Jolene that day. I have just started learning cooking, so she decided to get me a handy cookbook and cooking utensils to encourage me to whip up more delicacies!

But here comes the surprise! Who would have thought that cookbooks and utensils could come in the form of earrings? Aren’t they pretty? πŸ™‚

JW tried his best to take a close-up photo of my earrings. All I can say is, the best is yet to be…LOL

After a heavy meal, it was time to work off all those fats by going shopping at Parco@Millenia Walk. Aside from my daily walks to the train station, shopping, otherwise known as mall walking, is the only other form of exercise that I partake in.
This photo below encapsulates the essence and intensity of shopping as an activity. When girls shop together, they virtually enter another realm and become totally oblivious to their surroundings as well as how much they have in their pockets.

The harsh reality that their credit card limits have burst only hits them at the cashier, by which time turning back is no longer an option.

That is when they consider the only other viable option – suicide.

You know I was kidding about the last part right?! πŸ˜›

Anyway, when hunger finally got the better of us again, we made a pit stop at Octa Hotel for tea after Jolene left. Contrary to popular belief, this hotel is actually a Japanese shop-cafe.

We were dazzled by the wide selection of beautiful crockery as well as intricate jewellery and gift items found at the shop. This shop exudes the elusive wow factor that one can only find in Japanese retail establishments.

It is true when they say that the magic behind every successful shop lies in the smallest of details. Everything in the shop, from its decor to the products and service, is the epitome of perfection.

Every table top is decorated with a touch of class.

I indulged in the Strawberry Parfait which came with generous servings of berries, ice-cream and my favourite – cornflakes! Absolutely sinful but I couldn’t care less!

Karen, on the other hand, had mushroom soup. Unlike the rich, creamy soups that one would usually expect, this was very light, almost broth-like. Yet, this soup brought out the aroma and flavour of the mushrooms as the essence permeated the soup base.

Now, what did I say about attention to details? I really loved their choice of lace curtains as this softened the ambience of the cafe, making it more intimate and welcoming.

Our parting shot at the end of our afternoon tea session.

In case you were wondering, I wore the Anna lace dress from ClubCouture that day. It’s incredibly versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I had a dinner at a club that day so it made sense to up the glam factor a little.

Here, I accessorized with a sequinned bow belt and then played down the feminity of the ensemble with a pair of fierce cage heels.

Check out the sexy cut-out back detail! This lovely number scored numerous compliments from friends and relatives alike.

Don’t you just love simple dresses with an unexpected twist and an element of surprise? πŸ˜‰
I’ve been pretty busy lately with gatherings and events, but do stay tuned for more updates on my short getaway and of course, my favourite outfit posts! πŸ™‚

Mum’s Birthday @ Dian Xiao Er

May 16, 2010 by Regina Chow No Comments
I love to go to Chinese restaurants for meals, especially when I am out with friends and family. Some of my favourite Chinese restaurants include Royal China@ Raffles Hotel, Peach Garden, and Dian Xiao Er. Out of the three, Dian Xiao Er is the most affordable, but the quality of the food is certainly not compromised.

JW and I took my mum to the Dian Xiao Er branch at West Coast Plaza recently for her birthday celebration. We try to spend time with both sets of parents as often as we can, and while work takes us away from our filial responsibilities at times, we always make sure that we meet at least twice a month and are around for their birthdays.
We usually order the family set menu, and it was no different this time except that we added a tofu dish to complete the meal.

The Angelica Herb Duck was a clear favourite. The savoury gravy was full of herbal goodness, definitely a perfect complement to the crispy skin and succulent meat. Likewise, the baby kai-lan dish was absolutely delightful. The unexpected pairing of salted fish and lime added a burst of flavour to the baby kai-lan, and was a refreshing change from the traditional oyster sauce.

Another favourite dish of mine has got to be the Mongolian Spare Ribs. These spare ribs were marinated with a rich, tangy sauce and cooked to golden perfection. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Just looking at this photo alone makes me salivate!!

The Emerald Tofu is a new dish developed by the restaurant. It is a nutritious concoction of wheatgrass, tofu and delectable bits of prawns and broccoli. I found it a tad tasteless, but I guess food with high nutritional content usually tastes a little blend.
My parents and brother enjoyed the meal so much that they are now Dian Xiao Er converts too.

By the end of this post, I have already decided that I will be having Dian Xiao Er for dinner. In fact, I have been heading there so often that I can clearly remember that the family set menu for 2 persons cost exactly S$45.45.

My Verdict
Food: 9/10
Service: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10

Ma Maison

May 7, 2010 by Regina Chow No Comments
I used to frequent Ma Maison at Bugis Junction for their value-for-money set lunches when I used to work in the vicinity. The ambience alone is a huge draw for many of its patrons, especially if you appreciate interior decor.

Ma Maison, which stands for My Home in French, serves Japanese-style Western food. It is famous for its hamburger steak which comes with a rich, flavourful sauce that has been simmered for 28 days!

The wooden pillars and chairs, coupled with the floral table cloth and brick walls remind me of a little cottage in the European countryside. All it needs is a cozy fireplace to complete the look!

Old vintage bottles serve as candle holders. Unique isn’t it?

The menu cover feels like luxurious leather and the quality is probably even better than what some fine dining restaurants provide.

After much deliberation, these were the dishes that we ordered:
1) Camembert Cheese Fritters – Appetizer
The fritters were fried to golden perfection and the generous portions of cheese fillings will leave you wanting more!

2) Corn Soup

3) Hamburger Steak (Original Sauce)

4) Black Pepper Hamburger Steak

When making payment, all you need to do is bring this vintage-looking huge brass key to the counter. What an apt way to end the meal in a cottage!

Heading off for my weekend getaway now! Enjoy your weekend babes!

Spontaneous Meet-up and Ayam Bakar

April 17, 2010 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
I unwittingly flushed my contact lenses down the sink shortly after I returned from Tokyo (must be the fatigue from rushing reports!) so I had to wear my nerdy black-rimmed specs out for a while.
Thank goodness it didn’t take long for the optician to replace my lenses. I decided to head down to town to collect my lenses once I received a call from the optical shop. Jo happened to text me on the same day and that’s when we decided to meet-up for dinner!

This was my second time at Ayam Bakar Ojolali that week. JW and I had gone there earlier in the week as I have been itching to go there after Shihui recommended this Indonesian restaurant at Lucky Plaza. Apparently, Ayam Bakar Ojolali serves the most authentic Indonesian grilled chicken in Singapore.
According to the restaurant’s website, Ayam Bakar means “Grilled Chicken” and Ojolali means “Don’t Forget”. Well, the grilled chicken was indeed unforgettable enough for me to patronize the eatery twice in a week!

The restaurant was jam packed when we arrived during dinner time. I recommended that Jo order their chef specialty, which is no other than Ayam Bakar of course! I wanted to try another dish so I ordered the fried chicken with rice instead.

The grilled chicken meat was tender and well-marinated. The black sweet sauce used also compliments the taste of the chicken very well. The fried chicken that I had was very savoury too. It was fried to golden perfection and absolutely crispy! We also ordered keropok and beefball soup to go with our dishes.
Jo also had one of their drink specialties, Es Ojolali (Iced pink coconut), which she raved about while I settled for Happy Soda,a common drink found in most Indonesian restaurants. For the uninitiated, Happy Soda is essentially a concoction of Bandung (Rose syrup with condensed/evaporated milk) and soda. The one I had here was one of the better ones that I’ve tried so far!
Needless to say, Ayam Bakar Ojolali is now one of my favourite food haunts to get my indon food fix!

I wore my specs that day but changed out into my contacts subsequently. Nevertheless, that did not stop us from taking turns to model in my nerdy specs!

The funny thing was, we could hardly see a thing with my specs because my degrees are unbelievably high due to my poor eyesight. I am practically blind without contacts/specs!

Here’s what I wore that day:

I really like this look but as I had to take a bus that day, I decided to pull up the shirt dress and pair it with white shorts as well as flats. πŸ˜›

**Oops forgot to add that the photos of our dinner were all courtesy of Jo! πŸ™‚

Japanese Food

April 7, 2010 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Singapore may be known as a food paradise, but the quality of the Japanese food here still pales in comparison to that in Japan. Nonetheless, I love Japanese food and would love to have it practically everyday.
Recently, we decided to try the latest craze in town, Ippudo at Mandarin Gallery after hearing all the raves. The Ippudo ramen chain hails from Fukuoka. Besides Singapore, it also has an outlet in New York. πŸ˜‰

The queue was long but the waiting time was only about 15 minutes because we were there at about 3pm on a Sunday.

Green tea here is served in pots

I had the Shiramaru classic ramen. The soup base was rich and flavourful. In my opinion, it is pretty decent by Singapore standards. While the meat serving was rather miserable (only 3 slices of pork loin at most?!), it was very lean and tasty. I liked the ni-tamago too.

JW had the seasonal ramen. He gobbled everything up before I could even taste it, so I assume it must have tasted great. Either that, or he was just greedy.

Anyhow, a quick check with him later confirmed that it was indeed finger-licking good.

I had just returned from Japan where I got hooked on to cherry blossom ice-cream. I knew I had to order it when I saw it on the menu at Ippudo!

Tastewise, it didn’t match up to the ones I had in Tokyo, but I liked it all the same.

All in all, we were pretty satisfied with the dining experience at Ippudo. I wasn’t completely bowled over by the ramen, but I must say it is one of the better ones around.
Later on in the day, when I got a little hungry again, we popped by Liang Court for crepes at Mazazu crepes. I had the strawberry cheese cake crepe. My verdict? Absolutely yummilious! The whipped cream was light and fluffy. Definitely a perfect complement to the cheesecake and sweetened strawberries.

Outfit for the day:

DKNY Silk Bubble Hem Dress – my current wardrobe favourite because it is so cute and can be converted into a skirt!

Papa Palheta

April 2, 2010 by Regina Chow No Comments
Papa Palheta is a specialty coffee boutique that I came to know about while I was browsing through photos that a friend posted on facebook.
Nestled in a quiet little shop house near town, Papa Palheta is a comforting retreat away from the city buzz. The shop specializes in coffee beans from Latin America, Africa and Asia, and you get to sample them free of charge before making a purchase.
Unlike JW, I’m not exactly a fan of coffee, but I love new concepts, coffee places, good service and interesting decor. The taste and aroma of the coffee were invigorating. This, coupled with the warm and sincere service, easily sets this place apart from other run off the mill coffee joints.
We chilled out at the breezy courtyard before heading into the quaint living room when it started pouring.

I absolutely adore the decor of the living room. It has so much character. The juxaposition of new and old furniture pieces also enhances the eclecticism of its interior.

For those of you who are interested, Papa Palheta is located at:
140 Bukit Timah Road
And here’s what I wore that day:

TWG

November 22, 2009 by Regina Chow No Comments

I’m taking a quick break from my Japan trip posts. πŸ˜‰

JW and I had tea at the newly opened TWG outlet at ION shortly after I returned from Japan. Although TWG is a Singapore company, they have such a huge assortment of tea that it leaves you spoilt for choice! The queue on weekends can be pretty horrendous, so if you want to try out this place, I’ll suggest that you go on weekdays instead.

We had tea and scones. I had Geisha Blossom tea while JW had Earl Grey Gentleman. I personally think that the tea is value for money as it comes in a gigantic pot. I think each of us had about 10 cups of tea! The scones are pretty average though. I prefer the ones at Royal Copenhagen anytime.

Here’s what I wore that day:

Skirt and bow belt were my new purchases from Snidel in Tokyo. The skirt comes with pretty embroidery and tulle lining. It was love at first sight for me. ;P

The clutch was also newly purchased from Pleats Please by Issey Miyake. I was totally mesmerized by the bold and innovative designs in their store at Tokyo Midtown.

The mesh of florescent colours and gem accents add a dash of fun and playfulness to the design, without compromising functionality.

JW, on the other hand, wore the new gecko choker that I got for him from Agnes B in Tokyo. I like that the colour of the choker blends in with his skin tone. It is so different from the usual black leather ones that I see around.

Laksa & Mee Siam

August 11, 2009 by Regina Chow No Comments
Some of my favourite local food include satay, hokkien mee, chicken rice, laksa and mee siam. I am very fastidious about food, hence I would usually only frequent tried and tested stalls.

Laksa and mee siam, however tend to be very consistent in terms of taste and quality among hawkers and eateries. That is the reason why I usually wouldn’t mind ordering these dishes at random eateries.

I had a sudden craving for laksa last weekend so we popped by Toast Box to satiate my cravings and hunger pangs. Sometimes, I have laksa at Toast Box for breakfast on weekedays as well.

I like the laksa there because the coconut milk is creamy and the chilli isn’t too spicy. They are also pretty generous with the ingredients, which typically comprise shelled prawns, sliced fish cakes and tofu. Besides laksa, their mee siam is good too, as affirmed by JW.

The bandung drink that I had with my laksa was really refreshing! The taste was rich and to my surprise, there were little jelly bits in there too. It wasn’t just pleasing to the eye, but tantalizing to the taste buds as well. πŸ™‚

Breakfast

May 9, 2009 by Regina Chow No Comments
I like Riders Cafe. It is tucked away in a little corner, miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It can be rather crowded on weekends though. I always see expatriate families as well as tais-tais with their husbands and children in tow.

We go there for breakfast sometimes. I like the Riders Breakfast set, mainly because I love sunny-side up eggs. It also reminds me of the breakfast that my dad used to prepare daily when I was still staying at my parents’ place. I should really learn how to cook!!Riders BreakfastDecided to try the Eggs Benedict set this time. I wasn’t too fond of it because the eggs were too buttery sweet for my liking.

Ok..need to go off to blow my nose now. It’s running like a tap!
