Fashion Fridays: Spicing Up an All-Black Outfit

October 30, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Do you have a uniform that you turn to on days when you feel like you have nothing to wear? I do, and it helps me look presentable on days when I am feeling lazy or simply do not have the time to make a conscious effort to coordinate my outfit before heading out.
My everyday uniform is solely made up of shades of black, grey and beige. Isn’t my wardrobe boring without colours? I used to think that way too, but various textures and prints in monochromatic and neutral shades have proven me wrong. Hopefully this all-black OOTD that I’m sharing with you today will prove you wrong too.

To say I love my blacks is an understatement. Black occupies the bulk of my wardrobe now and naturally, I pack a lot of black with me when I travel. Case in point – I packed this black outfit with me during my recent trip to Shanghai and it is one of my favourite lazy day outfits.
What makes an all-black outfit interesting?
Textures, textures, textures. In my opinion, the easiest way to play up a single colour outfit is to mix and match textures.
The juxtaposition of black pleather with black fur amps up the glam factor instantly while my trusty ripped Frame Denim jeans and New Balance sneakers add a touch of casual chic to the ensemble.
When you put several stand-out textures together, accessorizing becomes unnecessary. All I did was to top it off with a cap, which is the best accessory for lazy days as it hides your out-of-bed hair, shields your face from the sun and pulls your outfit together without any hassle.

If you have any other tips for spicing up all-black outfits, do share them with me!
For now, I’ll be capping off (pun intended) this post with a photo of JW and I on a cruise along Huangpu River.
If you don’t already know by now, he’s usually the man behind the camera, and a very talented camera man at that although he claims he abhors photography. Don’t you also agree that he is more photogenic than I am? His winning million-dollar smile and sharp features can do no wrong, plus he has absolutely no bad angles to speak of. He’s my better half in every sense of the word and while he is everything that I am not, he completes me and makes me a better person everyday.
Thanks for reading and here’s wishing everyone a lovely weekend with your loved ones!

Fashion Fridays: Sporty Minimalist OOTD

October 23, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
The minimalist
look is a classic look that never goes out of style. Less is more, as
the minimalist chic outfit is all about comfort and clean lines. It may
sound a tad boring to some, but the minimalist wardrobe provides a blank canvas for experimentation, making it
possible to inject some fun into the whole minimalism game with
different style influences.

 Today’s
Fashion Fridays post is all about the sporty minimalist look. After
living out
of a suitcase for more than a month now, I have ditched my heels in
favour of comfortable sneakers and sports shoes for practical reasons. I
walk a lot in China and the terrain is not exactly ideal for heels. Trust me, you wouldn’t want to risk ruining your loubies or Valentinos here.

I have gradually
fallen in love with the sporty minimalist look, pairing my running shoes
with simple, functional minimalist pieces, such as this grey knit top
and skirt set, that are a tad more stylish than your typical track suits
and sweat pants. This look marries style with comfort, and in my
personal opinion, is great for those of you who travel frequently and
wish to pack light.
One
of the perks of the minimalist style is that you can create a variety
of looks simply by picking out a few tops and bottoms in neutral shades
or monochromatic hues. You’ll definitely get more mileage out of your
suitcase and more importantly, paying for excess baggage will fast
become a thing of the past!
What do you think of this look?
Thanks for reading and have a great weekend ahead!

Fashion Fridays: 5 Tips for Styling the Little Black Dress for Fall

October 16, 2015 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
One of the perks of living in a country with four seasons is the endless recipes for personal style. As temperatures dip in Nanjing, I’m all ready to welcome early fall with open arms as it marks the start of the layering season. If you’re interested in how I go about styling my fall and winter outfits, do stay tuned to my Fashion Fridays series every week.
This week, I’ll be sharing more about how I styled everyone’s favourite little black dress for fall. In early fall, temperatures in the day range from 21-26 degrees while temperatures in the night are within the range of 13-18 degrees.

How do you wear the little black dress out without catching a cold at night and still look presentable?
Here are 5 tips from experience:
1. Go for light knit dresses
Light knit dresses are more versatile than their thicker counterparts as you can roll up the sleeves easily in the day when it gets too warm. Another bonus point – you won’t look like a dumpling even after layering when it gets colder.
2. The devil is in the details
This
little black knit dress featured here has cut-out details at the
shoulders (i.e. cold-shoulder style) that add interest to the outfit.
Wear it on its own in the day and throw on a jacket in the evening for a
different look (and also to brave the cold winds of course).

3. Wear a hat
Always
wear a hat out during fall. It helps to shield your face from the sun
in the day and also keeps you warm at night. Plus, it amps up the chic
factor.

4. Wear slightly sheer stockings
Don’t go for the full-on fur lined stockings for fall or you’ll risk sweating buckets in the day. I
prefer to pair slightly sheer black stockings with my little black
dress for both style and practicality. The juxtaposition of opaque black
against slightly sheer black lends dimension to the outfit, so even
though you’re clad in black from head to toe, it doesn’t shout
b-o-r-i-n-g.
Gentle
reminder – don’t go for stockings that are too translucent unless tacky
is your thing and you are not afraid of the cold at night.

5. Go for genuine leather footwear
Genuine
leather footwear is not only more comfortable, they are also more
breathable and versatile. Leather shoes keep your feet cool and dry in
the day, yet sufficiently warm at night.

Coming
from a country that is sunny all year round, I have to admit I am still
wrapping my head around the basic principles of layering, especially
when there are drastic differences in day and night-time temperatures. I am learning as I go along and I hope this post will come in useful for those of you who are traveling to colder countries at this time of the year. If you do have
any other tips, feel free to share them with me too!
Happy Friday and here’s wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

Fashion: Minimalist Matching Sets & Life In Nanjing

September 15, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
For ease of travel and packing, my minimalist wardrobe now comprises several matching sets and comfy flats or sneakers. I
never used to like sneakers but the Adidas Stan Smith collection caught
my eye and had me head over heels in love, so much so I had to get them
in both white and navy. The slim cut is a refreshing change from the
classic Adidas Superstar range (and more sleek in my opinion). The fact
that it is made from genuine leather also gives you unparalleled comfort
without compromising on style.
Today, I will be sharing with you some minimalist looks featuring my trusty Adidas sneakers and matching top and bottom sets.

Top and pants set from random shops in Singapore
Cap from Brian Lichtenberg
Bag from Givenchy
Sneakers from Adidas Stan Smith
Shades from Marc by Marc Jacobs

Top and shorts set from MURUA
Flats from Pazzion

Top and skirt set from random shops in Singapore
Sneakers from Adidas Stan Smith

 If
you have been following me on instagram (@reginachow_sg) or Facebook here, you would
have realized that I am currently in Nanjing. I am on sabbatical this
year and will be shuttling between Singapore and China (yes, my blog
will still be active!) as JW is based in Nanjing for the coming year.
 What
a whirlwind the past few months has been. Thankfully, we are settling
in well and we are finally getting the hang of things. Besides improving
my grasp of the Chinese language and mastering the art of Taobao
shopping without the use of agents, traveling ranks high on my
priorities this year and I hope to explore as many cities as I possibly
can. Some cities on my bucket list are Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu,
Mongolia and Tibet. I also plan to visit North Korea and Russia if time
permits.

For now, I can’t wait to explore Nanjing and the many
historical sites it has to offer. If you have any suggestions on where
to go or places to visit, please let me know!

Get Rakuten Cashback and Promo Codes with Shopback

August 26, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Online shopping is so popular these days that it has become part and parcel of our lives. I buy everything that I want online without having to step out of the front door, and I love unwrapping the items when they arrive at my doorstep. I always feel like a kid in a candy store and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels such inexplicable joy.

And the joy only gets magnified when you snag a good deal through promo codes online. Promo codes aside, did you know that you could also get cashback when you shop online via websites like Shopback? I first read about Shopback when it was featured on Yahoo and Cosmopolitan previously and it is true that you can get the latest fashion deals and offers here.

Shopback teams up with your favourite online retailers such as Zalora, Rakuten, Taobao and Asos so that you can get cashback credited to your account simply by shopping.
Yes, real hard cash and not store credits.
Here’s how it works:
Take Singapore-based Japanese retailer Rakuten for example. Did you know that you will receive 5% cashback when you make a purchase at Rakuten via Shopback? With Shopback, you can get the best Rakuten cashback and promo codes.
I have been eyeing these Japanese snacks/gift sets on Rakuten and with the 5% cashback, I see no reason why I should hesitate any longer.  If you are a fan of Japanese snacks, you would probably know that most of these popular snacks are exclusive to Japan and hard to come by in Singapore.

Now, Rakuten is just one of the many online retailers that Shopback has tied up with. You can even get cashback when you shop on Taobao and find out more about the latest Groupon deals and promo codes from Shopback. They have been featured in both Cosmopolitan and Yahoo previously
The next time you decide to go online shopping, remember to check out Shopback too for the best cashback deals. Finally, we don’t have to wait for the next sale to start shopping!

Fashion: Styling The Vest (Minimalist Look)

August 25, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
Vests are my favourite outerwear as they make layering possible in our humid climate. Cardigans and jackets may be stylish but are best reserved for the cinemas, official work meetings or freezing lecture theatres, unless of course you think sweating buckets can help you to lose weight.
How do you style a vest? There are many ways to style it as it is very versatile and goes well with shorts, skirts, pants and even dresses. In fact, adding interest to a casual outfit has never been easier with a trusty vest.

I picked up this long flowy white vest from Topshop when I was shopping in London and to tell you the truth, I have been working this vest really hard as it hasn’t had time to sit in my wardrobe for more than a couple of days. I am convinced that it is a worthwhile wardrobe investment and today, I’ll show you two ways to style this wardrobe workhorse.
Styling the Vest with Jeans/Pants
With so many errands to run on a daily basis, my preferred ensemble these days comprises a comfy tank top and jeans paired with sneakers. The tank top and jeans combination is a full-proof combo but it can get a tad boring. Throw on a vest to shake things up a little and watch as your outfit transforms right before your eyes!

Tank top from Mphosis
Jeans from Frame Denim (Shopbop)
Vest from Topshop
Shoes from Adidas
Bag from Givenchy
Styling The Vest with Dresses

If you prefer a dressier look, try styling the vest with a dress (pun unintended). I like my white vest with classic black dresses as it instantly jazzes up the otherwise plain outfit.

These photos were taken when I was down with a bad flu in Copenhagen. I looked pale as a sheet but the warmth of the sun and the dose of white put some colour back in my cheeks. I would have looked far worse if I was clad in an all-black dress without my white vest.

Dress from Acne Studios
Vest from Topshop
Sunglasses from Marc by Marc Jacobs

Now, I am sure it is not hard to see why vests are fast becoming my wardrobe staples. The key to styling vests is to pair them up with simple, basic everyday pieces. I have been falling back on sleeveless dresses and tank tops but vests complement long sleeve tops and sweaters too.
I promise this wouldn’t be the last time that you’ll see of my vests in this space as I’m about to experience autumn and winter in a foreign land this year. More updates on that in time to come, but meanwhile, have a great week ahead!

Fashion: 10 instances of Kpop Stars’ Cardigan Obsession

August 18, 2015 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
Love it or hate it, the preppy hipster look is a
major trend and cardigans play an important role in completing this look.

Thanks to the rise of modern British aesthetics,
and the revival of the preppy look first popularised in the early 1900s, cardigans
are receiving new-found appreciation among the younger demographic, and
particularly among the boys. Yes, for the first time ever, I will be sharing
some looks that the boys can relate to. After all, fashion is not only for the
fairer sex, and I am secretly hoping that my hubby will be able to pick up a
tip or two from this post too (oops, looks like that it’s no longer a secret)!
For the ladies, cardigans used to be regarded as
boring granny clothes. But with the explosion of prints and cuts these days,
cardigans are anything but boring. Just take a cue from the K-pop artists who
are unafraid to experiment with the wildest prints and designs. Sure, there are
hits and misses, but they have definitely made the humble old cardigan come
alive again.
You could break all the rules and wear cardigans the K-pop way, but first let’s review
the good, the bad, and the ugly.
1. Donghae

Super Junior’s baby-faced looker Donghae looks
impossibly adorable in this collegiate outfit, complete with a bow-tie and geek
glasses.
2. Nichkhun
Speaking of baby-face, here’s another one who does
not seem to age. 2PM’s Nichkhun does college cool for South Korean fashion
label Basic House with boat shoes, stripes and a bright cardigan.
3. Kyuhyun
Taking a leaf from his hyung‘s book,
Super Junior’s Kyuhyun does the bow-tie and cardigan look too, this time with a
mustard-coloured cardigan that brightens up the talk show he is co-hosting.
4. Park Bom
2NE1’s four-dimensional (code word for kooky)
powerhouse singer, Park Bom, looks right at home in her ice-cream printed
cotton cardigan. I am sure that you would agree that this cardigan is as
whimsical as her personality.
5. Shinee
Shinee looks ready for the eggnog and log cakes in
this colour-coordinated getup that involves scarves, beanies and, yes,
cardigans.
6. Shinee
Boy, they sure are fond of cardigans in a multitude
of colours and prints.
7. Minho
Here’s another instance of Shinee – this time just
the “visual” of the group, Minho – showing some love for the
cardigan. Unfortunately, he looks like a rejected Christmas tree or a child’s
failed art project.
8. G-Dragon
Dubbed South Korea’s most stylish dresser, Big
Bang’s leader G-Dragon manages to pull off a punk look even with a muted grey
cashmere cardigan from Thom Browne.
9. Jessica
Girls Generation’s Jessica does mixed prints right
with a slouchy knit cardigan and printed dress. Those brown ankle booties complete
the laidback vibe of the outfit.

10. Tiffany
Like her fellow member, Girls Generations’ Tiffany
rocks a printed cardi. The bright scarlet print on her oversized cardigan makes
for a majestic airport entrance. Plus, it totally goes with her hair.
Well, I did warn you there were hits and misses
(I’m still scarred by Minho’s awful cardigan), but at least they’re not afraid
to give it a try!
Now, which look is your favourite?

Fashion Fridays: Nine West Spring Summer Collection 2015

July 24, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
Nine West shoes have always been known for their classic designs, comfort and quality. In fact, my very first pair of leather high heel work pumps came from Nine West and they were so durable and comfy, it took me a long time to wear them out.

Fast
forward many years down the road and I am still an ardent fan of Nine
West. I attended their Spring Summer Collection preview at their new Suntec branch a couple of months back and couldn’t be more thrilled to see how the brand has reinvented
itself with bright bursts of colours and sporty elements as the sports luxe look gains widespread popularity.

Think flatforms, colourful loafers and wedges that can easily incorproate into your weekend wardrobe for a casual chic look infused with athletic vibes.
My favourite pair in the collection has got to be this pair of stylish white and gold brogues. I made a mental note to purchase it on my next visit and I really need to make time to pop by soon.
Summer just isn’t summer without pastels and florals, and Nine West knows just that. These dainty pastel heels with intricate floral details and diamontes are the perfect accompaniment to your summer wardrobe. They come with matchy-matchy bags too so you can easily complete your summer look!
Nine West’s Spring Summer Collection is now available at all stores island-wide. Since it’s summer all year round in Singapore, it’s never too late to update your wardrobe with these gorgeous finds!
Happy Shopping!

Fashion Fridays: Summer Outfits To Beat the Heat

July 10, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Long breezy tunics, shorts, rompers and gladiator sandals are my summer must-haves. When temperatures soar and the weather gets insanely hot, beating the heat in comfortable clothes becomes my top priority.

I love how long tunics like this white sleeveless top from Zara are more stylish and versatile than the average tank top. Achieving different looks with a top like this is an effortless task as it can be styled tucked out or in. I can totally picture myself pairing this with my white ripped jeans from Frame Denim instead of denim shorts when I travel to cooler climates.

I can never get enough of rompers too. They’re ideal for lazy days or days when the heat gets unbearable (which is practically everyday now). I favour rompers with cute prints like this popsicle print romper in sweet candy colours. And of course, I had to match it with my milk carton bag that Karen gifted me.

Sunset is also my favourite colour and I adore how it casts a soft glow to photographs. We managed to catch the last rays of sunlight last weekend and I couldn’t be more grateful.

If you haven’t already realized, gladiator sandals are now my summer staple. I never fail to reach for them when I am in shorts or rompers as they dress up my bare legs and add balance to the overall ensemble, revealing just the right amount of skin while keeping me cool at the same time.

What about you? What are your summer staples to beat the crazy heat?

American Eagle Outfitters is in Singapore!

July 7, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Did you know that American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), America’s favourite jeans brand, is now in Singapore? Its flagship boutique at VivoCity opened its doors to the public on 19 June.

Spanning 4,000 square feet, the

It was a night of fun-filled activities as the store transformed into a magical playground with a temporary tattoo booth with 5 AEO designs to choose from, foosball and ice air hockey table. Not forgetting the free flow of champagne, Krispy Kreme donuts and delish canapes such as Wagyu beef burgers and grilled prawn skewers.
