Taipei – The City that Never Stops Eating (Part 2)

April 25, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments
I just got back from Jakarta (thanks to Bata for the sponsored trip!) and I have, very unfortunately, fallen ill. I am now coughing very badly and I am close to losing my voice. I don’t cough as much in the day as I do at night, hence my sleeping cycle is now somewhat reversed.
Anyhow, let’s go back to Taipei for now. This post is filled with pictures of food, so if you feel hungry after reading this, don’t say I didn’t warn you. 😉
We had a sumptuous Japanese meal for lunch at a random Japanese joint. The sashimi was fresh and every cod roe was bursting with flavour. Yummy!
One of our friends introduced us to a roadside stall serving seafood noodles made famous by Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao because he used to live in this particular district and patronized this stall very frequently.
I love the dimly lit alleys against the backdrop of the darkening sky at dusk.
After a few turns, we finally arrived at the famous seafood noodles stall which was situated in the middle of an obscure street among a mass of other make-shift stalls. This is perhaps the Taiwanese version of our hawker centre.
Unfortunately, we were so ravenous the moment the food arrived, we forgot to take photos of the food and the stall. It is quite unmistakable once you find your way here though, as there are many photos of Jam and his fans plastered all over the stall. 😉 The servings are huge, with generous portions of fresh seafood, all at a ridiculously low price of just S$3!
After filling our tummies, we made our way to W Hotel near Taipei 101.

The building with purple lights is Esquire bookstore, which has outlets all over Taipei. The main branch here has a total of 5 levels, which amazes me especially in an era where books are gradually being replaced with e-books and brick and mortar bookstores are slowly becoming a thing of the past.
Taipei 101 looks majestic but from what I remember of my last trip here, the view from the top of the tower is quite disappointing.
Finally, we arrived at W Hotel! I love the elevator ceiling, which is a visual spectacle in its own right.
We sat there, had drinks and chatted for what seemed like eternity before we finally got back on our feet and left for more food.

As you can see, the place was pretty dark, hence not many photos were taken.

Everyone raves about the street food in Taipei and honestly, it is not difficult to understand why. There is a huge variety of choices even if you are not into their signature fried food (e.g. fried chicken, mushrooms and the likes).

Baked potato drenched in cheese, topped with sliced ham.

Snow Ice

Salt and Pepper Squid

Smelly Tofu
 Xiao Long Bao

This reminds me of crepes, but this is known as 蛋饼 in Taiwan. There’s a wide selection of fillings to choose from but what really completes the meal is the dark sauce drizzled on top.

Are you hungry yet? I haven’t had much appetite lately due to the bout of illness but these pictures are enough to work up an appetite for me!
Finally, I’m ending this post with some of my outfit shots in Taipei:

I bought this pair of Korean black wedged sneakers at WuFenPu for about S$80 and they are surprisingly very comfortable. I loved it so much that I brought it along with me to Jakarta too and I pretty much wore it everyday. 😉

Given the amount of shopping I did, the focus of my next and final Taipei post will be on my shopping buys!

Head-to-Toe Prints: Is it a good idea?

April 22, 2013 by Regina Chow 4 Comments

Head-to-Toe matchy-matchy prints have been on trend for some time now, and while it may be a daunting affair to replicate what we see on runways without looking like you stepped out of your house in your pajamas, one thing’s for sure, you will definitely attract a lot of stares and attention by following this trend. Whether or not people look on in admiration or with furrowed brows depends largely on the cutting and workmanship of the clothes.
I think the key is to keep the look structured with tailored silhouettes. If it is too loose, you’ll risk looking like you’re wearing pajamas, and if it is too tight, the entire ensemble just looks cheap.

If you find bold graphic prints from head-to-toe too intimidating (like me), you can consider trying smaller prints that are less in-your-face. In place of pants, you can also try going for shorts instead. What I also like about these head-to-toe sets is that you can always mix and match the top and bottom separately with other separates in your wardrobe.
Here’s my take on head-to-toe prints with a paisley print top and shorts set:

In addition to the stash of beauty products worth over S$100 (read HERE for more details), I’ve a brand new set of this outfit to give away to one special reader from Singapore too!
The top is loose on me (I’m a UK size 4-6 and I added a belt for more definition) and this should fit up to UK 8. The bottom has an elasticized waist so it’ll fit most sizes.

Taipei – The City that Never Stops Eating (Part 1)

April 16, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
Although the bulk of this trip was spent shopping (well, it was hard not to shop, especially when we set foot on Wu Fen Pu), we made sure that we had ample time for Taiwan snacks and delicacies too. After all, Taipei is the city that never stops eating.
One of my favourite stalls in Taiwan is Ah Zong Mian Xian, located at Ximending. Ah Zong Mian Xian’s noodles come with generous servings of pig intestines, which is great if you’re a fan of innards. I generally tend to stay away from all innards, so I was there just for the noodles. I absolutely love the texture of the noodles and the flavourful gravy!

 Ah Zong Mian Xian
Address: No.8-1, Emei St., Wanhua District, Taipei City (台北市峨嵋街8號之1)
Walking Directions: 5 minutes walk from Ximen MRT station, exit 6
Being an ardent fan of Jay Chou’s music, I was adamant on visiting Deja Vu, a themed restaurant set up by Jay Chou and famous magician Liu Qian.

The restaurant
is decorated with antique chairs, tables and artifacts which belong to
Jay Chou, alongside props that Liu Qian used in his magic shows.

I love the baroque and gothic interior design elements, which came together beautifully to create an interesting environment for patrons to dine in. There is so much character here and the ornaments on display are a feast for the eyes as well.

The most outstanding item on display at the restaurant is probably Jay’s Batmobile, which doubles up as a bait for all photography enthusiasts.

My favourite item, however, is this intricately carved antique grand piano. It has been a while since I last played the piano and I have been contemplating about buying one for my current home.  Maybe it’s about time!

Decor aside, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the food is reasonably priced and pretty delicious too. Here’s a word of caution though, the portions here are ridiculously huge so it is best to share to prevent food wastage.

Besides pizza, we ordered the mentaiko pasta here at the recommendation of my friend, and I’m happy to report that both were good! This is one restaurant that I would recommend for both ambience and food.

Jacket from Zara
Jeans from Topshop
Wedge Sneakers from Korea
Bag from Prada

Touch of Gold

March 27, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I haven’t had the time nor energy to do outfit posts these days, but last weekend, I finally decided to pull myself out of the rut and get back into the groove of dressing up.
I’ve had these floral print palazzo pants in forever but have never found the opportunity to wear them out because nothing in my wardrobe seemed to go with it. Then as I was going through my rack just last week, I found this old sequin top from Bangkok that happened to go really well with them. I love how it also adds a touch of glitz to these granny pants. 😛

The rest of my accessories were mostly in shades of nude and gold as I didn’t want the outfit to be overshadowed. The nude wedges c/o of Bata did however add a spot of neon to the outfit. Me likey!
On a related note, I am one of the 4 winners for the Bata Spring Summer Bloggers’ Style Contest. Here’s a BIG thank you to all of you who voted for me!! 🙂

Accessories from Hermes, CCSkye, Diva and Accessorize
Vintage pearl belt from my mum’s closet
Lunch bag clutch from Wisteriea
Shoes from Bata

Outfit of the Day and Jeffrey Campbell Foxy Spike

March 15, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I’m plagued with problem feet thanks to bunions (birth defect, not due to high heels) and a much longer second toe, hence it is an absolute pain for me to buy shoes from online stores without trying. As much as I longed to buy Jeffrey Campbell shoes, I had to resist the urge to give in every time because it’s hard to get hold of them in physical stores here, which means my best bet is to buy them online, which is not a problem if my feet weren’t this problematic. Thanks to my feet, I can never gauge what size to buy unless I get to try them on in real life!

So one fine day, I chanced upon a shop in Cineleisure by the name of P.V.S and there, sitting on the racks were Jeffrey Campbell shoes in different styles. It was a dream come true for me!

I’ve been eyeing Foxy Spike for the longest time. Hello there.

I always thought it would be impossible to wear shoes this high, but the raised platforms in front lower the arch significantly and make this a breeze to walk in.
I’m always in shorts during the weekend, and these shoes are the perfect complement to my weekend attire.

The spikes behind are exceptionally sharp though, so if you’re thinking of getting this pair, please be careful! However, if you look on the bright side, these shoes actually double up as weapons. If anyone tries to attack you, all you have to do is give them a kick and I’m pretty sure it’ll send them to the hospital.
In case you were wondering, no, I wasn’t kidding when I said that. 😛

Bata Spring Summer Collection 2013 — Win a pair of Shoes and Bag from Bata!

March 12, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment

Bata is no stranger to most Singaporeans as many of us grew up wearing their white canvas shoes for school. What many of us probably don’t know is that Bata offers a myriad of shoes that caters not only to school-going kids, but to trendy youths and working adults too.
I was invited to Bata’s recent bloggers preview for their Spring Summer Collection 2013 and it was quite an eye-opener for me! I was surprised to see how Bata has transformed into a haven for shopaholics like me who adore shoes and bags in cheerful candy colours!

That’s Rachel kicking off the preview with an introduction of Bata. Did you know that Bata hails from the Czech Republic?
In fact, Bata was founded by Thomas John Bata (which explains the name of the shop) in 1894 and the first Bata shop in Singapore was established in 1931.

After a detailed introduction on the various shoe lines that Bata carries, we were treated to an up close and personal experience with the bags and shoes. All the bloggers could choose a pair of shoes and a bag each to take home with us!

I fell in love with their collection of wedges because there are so many colours and designs to choose from. When it comes to footwear, I personally like wedges the most because they’re so comfortable to wear and you don’t have to compromise on height!
If you’re curious about what I picked that night, here they are!

A beautiful bag is the finishing touch to any ensemble and this is the
perfect bag for me! Add a punch of panache to your party ensemble with
this vibrant satchel or convert it into an elegant clutch for a date
with that special someone! If this isn’t the epitome of versatility, I
don’t know what is!
Want a pair of shoes that’s comfy, trendy and versatile? This pair of
nude wedges from Bata’s S/S 2013 collection matches practically
everything in my wardrobe. I also love how the bright neon orange soles
add an element of surprise and a pop of colour to any outfit!

Now, here’s the final look. I love mixing colours and prints for an unexpected twist. The gorgeous
shoes and bag from Bata complement my outfit perfectly, lending a subtle
dash of edginess without compromising on style! The best part is, they
go so well with everything, I can already think of a dozen ways to mix
and match them with the rest of my wardrobe!

Do you like my outfit?
Bata’s running a bloggers FB contest right now,so it’ll be great if you could help  “Like” my photo to vote for me at this link:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=477376378983687&set=a.477375752317083.1073741832.225091904212137&type=1&theater
By voting, you’ll also stand to win a pair of shoes and bag from their Spring Summer collection!

Contest ends 22 March 6pm!

Year of the Snake Outfit

February 15, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I’ve been hunting high and low for a yellow or green tulle skirt for the longest time and funnily enough, I came across one that I really liked when I was shopping for a friend’s baby at Gingersnaps. Gingersnaps may be a children’s boutique, but its Raffles City outlet stocks the same clothes in larger sizes (up to 14 years old). Needless to say, I got myself this pretty little tulle skirt in the largest size.

You can’t see it here, but the hems are manicured with a row of rosettes which gives the skirt an added flounce. I felt just like a ballerina!

Skirt: Gingersnaps
Accessories: Hermes and Elitrend
Bag: Forever New

Yellow is supposed to bring my Chinese zodiac sign good luck in the year of the Snake, so it was only natural that I wore this skirt on the first day of Chinese New Year. Besides, yellow, I’ve been wearing a lot of black. Contrary to popular belief that one should wear bright, vibrant colours for Chinese New Year, black is apparently another lucky colour that bodes well for me this year. I guess that works well to my advantage since 80% of my work wardrobe is made up of black and grey pieces. Don’t take me too seriously though, I just find these predictions very entertaining and since there is no harm in abiding by these “rules”, I thought, why not?

What about you? What are your lucky colours for the year of the Snake?

Jardin de Fleurs Event at the Singapore Turf Club

February 12, 2013 by Regina Chow No Comments

A
couple of weekends ago, I was invited to the Singapore Turf Club’s Jardin de Fleurs event, organized by One9Ninety. Felicia happened to be
back in Singapore for her school holidays so I invited her along as my
plus one. She was my trusty lunch buddy back in Sydney and it was great
catching up with her again!

Dress: ClubCouture
Floral headband and vintage tapestry bag: Sydney Glebe Market
Shoes: Korean
As
the theme of the event suggests, all the ladies turned up in feminine
floral dresses while the men donned edgy floral shirts. There were so many eye candies around, it was quite a
sight to behold!
  What
was even more amazing was how the function room (Sage Room) was done
up. Every table was adorned with beautiful flower bouquets. Even the
walkway leading up to the room was sprinkled with flowers. Very
impressive indeed.

It was a feast not only for our eyes, but our stomachs too, as we indulged in a sumptuous buffet.
In fact, if you’re looking for a venue to host networking parties, team building or corporate events, the Singapore Turf Club might just be the perfect spot. The myriad of room choices are designed to accommodate different types of events and group sizes! Coupled with the adrenalin rush you’ll get from the races, the Singapore Turf Club certainly aims to please. 😉

More details can be found here.
If you were wondering why we were looking on so intently, this is the reason:

I love watching the horses parade around the square in their best attire, although some may not be at their best behaviour. But I guess that’s all part of the fun, isn’t it?

I also had the opportunity to catch up with Jessie from the Singapore Turf Club! She’s the sweetest lady around and it’s always fun chatting with her. 🙂
Before the afternoon came to an end, we wasted no time in maximising the use of the photo booth, which in my opinion, is a must-have at every event. We received the polaroid versions instantly and they make such lovely momentos!

The photos that you see here are the high res versions kindly provided by One9Ninety. 🙂

 With Fel
 With Jessie
With Fel and new friend, Vikki

 Us and the Ninja Girls!

Us with Smith and Eunice from One9Ninety. 🙂 They’re hilarious!
With the rest of the One9Ninety ladies!
Thank you so much for the invitation!

Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner at Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant

February 11, 2013 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
How are your Chinese New Year celebrations coming along? After a week of gorging on rich, sinful delicacies which started a week before the actual reunion dinner, all I’m craving now is a bowl of plain Teochew porridge to clean my palate. Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate the finer things in life, especially when it comes to food, but sometimes, too much of a good thing can be too excessive for me. 😉

This year, the reunion dinner with my in laws was held at Ah Yat Seafood at Turf City. Despite being very packed, the food quality was not compromised and every dish turned out really well. I found the octopus appetizer and the shark’s fin soup exceptionally flavourful.
Jw and I are not fans of abalone because the rubbery texture just doesn’t cut it for us. I think the older folks appreciate this dish much more than the younger generation. Perhaps we really can’t appreciate the finer things in life after all. LOL
True to its name, Ah Yat seafood certainly boasts a wide array of fresh, succulent seafood. The prawns were sweet, juicy and crunchy. Every bite brought tears of joy to my eyes. Ok I admit I’m exaggerating just a little. 😛
The Garoupa was delicious! The meat was cooked to perfection with a mildly sweet, delicate flavour. Just thinking about it makes me salivate. I know, I claimed that after all that feasting, all I want now is a bowl of porridge, but isn’t this the perfect complement to a bowl of plain porridge too? 🙂
It’s a yearly tradition for us to take a group photo after every reunion dinner, and this year was no exception. In place of my elder sis-in-law who’s on holiday overseas (how envious I am!), we had the honour of having my younger sis-in-law’s boyfriend join us for the dinner. 😉
Finally, here’s my outfit of the day. I wore a cat motif shirt with a poufy lace cut-out skirt from my Bangkok trip some time ago. I’ve been collecting anything and everything with cat motifs because they’re so adorable!
Shoes: Salvatore Ferragamo
Bag: Dip Drops
Socks: Gift from Shihui

Roses Galore

February 4, 2013 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I thought I would never have the chance to wear this rose printed sweater in Singapore, but as luck would have it, the rainy weather of late made it possible. I love girly, feminine prints, and those who know me would naturally assume that I own floral printed apparel in vibrant colours. The truth is, as much as I love floral prints, I tend to shy away from brightly coloured florals (especially red!) because of my preference for understated pieces.
Well, people change with time, and as age starts catching up on me, I realized that I’ve grown somewhat more adventurous as well. In this outfit, everything on me, except my shoes and bag, has floral prints on it. This is probably the most cheerful skirt I have in my wardrobe too, and the fact that the colour happens to be very much in line with the upcoming Chinese New Year festivities makes me smile.

Hat from Forever New (Sydney)
Bag from Myers (Sydney)
Blouse, skirt and shoes from random Sg shops
Detachable floral collar from Bugis Village

I wore this out with my aunt and uncle from Sydney who dropped by Singapore for a short holiday. The bag was a gift from her. Again, this is probably the brightest bag I have in my closet as I’m a fan of either black, beige or pink bags. I can be so boring and predictable sometimes. 😛

It only just struck me that it has only been slightly over a month since I last saw my relatives given that I left Sydney in late December. Strangely, I feel like I’ve been back for a long time now as there’re so many activities keeping me busy all day long. I’m not complaining though, for I have been on a break for far too long. Now that I’ve gotten back into the groove, I feel much happier than before!

Ring from F21
I’m looking forward to the Chinese New Year holidays, and hopefully, I’ll be able to catch up on all my backdated posts over the long weekend!
Meanwhile, here’s wishing everyone health, happiness and prosperity in the new year! 🙂
