Marmalade Pantry

January 16, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
It’s about time I shared this restaurant with everyone, if you haven’t yet had the chance to try it out.
The crabmeat linguine here is a favourite of mine.

The tomato sauce is very flavourful and its smooth consistency leaves you wanting more. You’ll also find that the chili and pine nuts lend that extra burst of flavour, adding variation in taste. It’s so very addictive!

Marmalade Pantry serves all-day breakfast too, which led to my other half’s decision to order french toast drizzled with chocolate sauce. I thought it was pretty average.

(JW: It tastes better than your crabmeat linguine loh!)

I mean, how different can french toast taste?! Give me my Tunisian from Wild Honey anytime. πŸ™‚

Melben Seafood with Jun

January 7, 2011 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
One weekend not too long ago, Jun and I decided to have dinner at Melben as I’ve never been there before.

Jun and I have been friends for more than a decade now, and I’ll like to think that we still look as youthful as the first time we met! (For those who beg to differ, we would appreciate if you could hold your tongues forever. :P)

I know I’m slow. Practically everyone I know in Singapore has already tried Melben Seafood and given it their thumbs up. For the uninitiated (otherwise known as “suaku people” in Singlish), Melben Seafood is a famous crab joint tucked away in an HDB estate in Ang Mo Kio. Ordinarily, one wouldn’t expect a neighborhood seafood restaurant to draw huge crowds, but Melben is in a different league altogether. Waiting in line for at least half an hour appears to be the norm. In addition to that, we had to wait an additional 20 minutes or so for our food to be served.

Well, good things are worth waiting for. Ravenous by the time our Crab beehoon and Pork Ribs in Butter Sauce arrived, we devoured everything at lightning speed in a bid to satiate our hunger. I liked the milky flavourful soup that came with the crab beehoon and the pork ribs soaked in delicious buttery gravy.

It’s not difficult to cook seafood (especially crabs) in my opinion. Rather, the difficulty lies in complementing the seafood with the right sauces to enhance the overall flavour. In this instance, Melben is certainly unrivalled.

For those who have yet to give Melben a shot, here’s the address for your easy reference:

Blk 232 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 #01-1222

The Prata Place – Springleaf Garden

November 17, 2010 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
JW introduced me to The Prata Place a couple of months ago and it is now my favourite prata place! Pun unintended. πŸ˜› Unlike other shops, the servings here are huge and the pratas are not greasy at all.

I usually go for the egg prata. It is fragrant and exceptionally crispy, even when it has been left on the table for a while. The best part is, it only costs S$1.50! Very economical indeed.

We brought my family there recently and they loved it as much as we did. I am so looking forward to my next meal there! πŸ˜‰

Anniversary Lunch at Iggy’s

October 25, 2010 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
We celebrated the 10th year anniversary of our relationship in July at Iggy’s, shortly after I returned from my Europe work trip.

A decade seems like a long time, but it sure doesn’t feel like 10 years has passed. Among our circle of friends, we often get questions on how we keep the spark alive. I am no expert and I don’t really have the answer, but I guess it all boils down to a combination of factors.

While our hobbies are vastly different, we do share similar interests, like checking out museums , new food haunts and travelling. Differences aside, our relationship is also underpinned by similar values, principles and most importantly, respect.

We give each other a lot of space too. I think it’s unreasonable to expect your other half to make significant changes to his lifestyle after getting together with you or after marriage, and morphing into an attention seeking control freak is bound to scare the life out of your guy.

He’s free to pursue his interests (e.g. rockclimbing haha) and the same applies to me (yay to shopping!). Being a Sagittarius means that I embrace freedom, and I believe that freedom should also be extended to my partner.

So yup, I guess that sums it up. πŸ™‚ Now it’s time to let the pictures do the talking.

Here’s what I wore that day – a frilly nude coloured top from Number Fifty@Mandarin Gallery paired with black cigarette pants.

Food was decently good and service was immaculate, but I kept thinking about Clementi satay, katong laksa, among other local hawker delights. I always miss hawker food when I return from overseas.

JW’s dessert was tasty, but my beetroot flavoured sherbet was a little too funky for my taste buds. I much prefer Awfully Chocolate’s dark chocolate ice-cream or Udders’ Mao Shan Wang Durian ice-cream (SLURP!!!).

Couple shot to end the day.

Part of his anniversary gift to me was a trip to Austria, which I’ll be blogging about pretty soon. The trip was awesome and it felt every bit like a 2nd honeymoon! πŸ˜‰

Vintage Chanel Button Ring

September 4, 2010 by Regina Chow No Comments
I received this in the mail this week and I haven’t been able to take my hands off it! It’s a genuine vintage Chanel button that was converted into a ring. It exudes a certain old world charm, doesn’t it? Totally glamourous yet edgy at the same time.

I love Fayfey’s unique and affordable creations. There’s always something for everyone!

Number Fifty & Wild Honey

July 9, 2010 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Mandarin Gallery has become one of my favourite places to chill out, shop and basically just to get some peace and quiet. Although it’s located right smack in the heart of the city, this is one of the rare malls that offers a confluence of exclusivity, accessibility and tranquility.
While it counts some strange shops such as a huge Denni boutique (yes, the jewellery brand that you find in all departmental stores) as its tenants, you can definitely find hidden gems here!

One of the gems that we uncovered was Number Fifty. The shop brings in unique apparel from French designers Deja Fan and Manoush as well as Thai labels such as Soda and Tutti. The items are reasonably priced too. I’ve never picked up anything that was above S$250.
This photo marked our first shopping spree at Number 50. I think this photo was taken some time in April or May? *All photos in this post are courtesy of Karen by the way :)*
Since then, I have made another 2 trips to the store, spent a fortune and became a proud member who is now entitled to 10% discount storewide.
I don’t know if I should laugh or cry, really. πŸ˜›
After shopping, we made our way to Wild Honey, a restaurant that offers all day breakfast. Remember my addiction to all day breakfast? I thought it was just a phase, but it has been about 2-3 months now and I still enjoy eating breakfast at all times of the day.

The menu items are written on two large chalk boards. They even have pictures of the items stored in an i-Phone at the counter to facilitate the ordering process. πŸ˜‰

I can’t remember what drink I had, but I know I really liked the beverages that we ordered!

Karen had The European – Eggs Benedict.

As for me, I always order the same dish – Tunisia. I love the mish-mash of runny eggs, tomatoes and spices.

And finally, here’s what Jo had. I can’t remember the name of the dish.

Jo, do you remember what you had? πŸ˜›

Wild honey can be a little crowded, especially on weekends, but I love the warm and cozy atmosphere, complemented by dim lights against the red brick walls. The dainty test tube flower vases on the walls make great conversation pieces too.

All-day Breakfast at Prive

July 2, 2010 by Regina Chow No Comments
I’m finally back in town after a 2-week long work trip in Europe! I got back yesterday afternoon but I was back at work today, feeling dreary and all. I’m physically tired but mentally awake. The worst combination you can ever imagine.

Anyway, I’ve been pretty addicted to all-day breakfast places recently, especially after my frequent visits to Riders Cafe and subsequently, Wild Honey (I will blog about it soon!). The thought of filling my tummy with fresh, crisp bacon and runny eggs is enough to make me salivate. This is what I call comfort food!

Oh..and not forgetting, my comfort drink – Hot Chocolate! I don’t drink tea or coffee because I get heart palpitations from them. Although Laurent Bernard’s hot chocolate is still my all-time favourite, the hot chocolate here is almost comparable as well. It is rich yet not overpoweringly sweet, and goes very well with all the breakfast sets.

I personally think that the breakfast set at Prive is comparable to that of Riders. The best part is, you can choose to have your breakfast outdoors and feast on a spectacular view of the sea at the same time, or sit indoors in the comfort of air conditioning.

Sometimes, I find Riders a little too crowded and humid for my liking, so Prive is a wonderful alternative for breakfast! My only gripe is, the pancakes here aren’t that great, so I’ll still head on down to Riders when I have a craving!
The weekend is finally here again, marking another opportunity for busy workaholics to enjoy breakfast/brunch at a leisurely pace! πŸ™‚

Arteastiq Tea Lounge by Marxx

June 10, 2010 by Regina Chow 6 Comments
It has been a while since I met Grace as she got attached recently and has been spending more time with her baby! I finally had her all to myself one weekend a couple of weeks ago!
I love hanging out with girlfriends just to do the usual girly things like watching chick flicks, shopping, doing our nails and catching up over a cup of tea. After the movie (I love Sex & The City!) and a lot of shopping, we had a sumptuous yet sinful meal at McDonalds before adjourning to Arteastiq Tea Lounge for dessert tea.
Housed within Marxx, a designer furniture shop, Arteastiq is tastefully decorated with an artistic European flair infused with elements of Eastern influence. Softly illuminated by the row of cane lights which resemble Chinese birdcages, this cafe has a very comfortable and cozy atmosphere that is perfect for unwinding.
Other eastern influences include the blue and white floral wallpaper, which is reminiscent of an oriental painting. The black and white print sofa also lends an interesting contrast to the light colour palette.
I fell completely in love with the European armchairs which come in an assortment of vibrant neon colours, adding a playful touch to the elegant decor.
Grace and I share many common interests, such as shopping, make-up and all things associated with beauty, not to mention camwhoring too! We always go the extra mile to ensure that only our best angles are captured.
I had the lychee tea while Grace went for the pear tea. The lychee tea was a little too sweet for me but I found Grace’s tea very refreshing and pleasing to the palate. The dessert teas are brewed with real fruit, hence you can taste the essence of the fruit with every sip. Each of our trays also came with a plate of delicious dried cranberries, a delightful complement to the slightly bitter-sweet taste of tea.
Here’s what I wore that day. It’s a dreamy tulle tunic similar to the previous outfit that I posted. This cute little tunic is from Number 50 at Mandarin Gallery. I thought this would be the perfect outfit for catching Sex and the City as it is feminine, mischievous and outrageous at the same time!

Dempsey & Ayam Bakar

June 6, 2010 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Feeling well rested after the cruise, we headed down to Dempsey the day we returned to mainland Singapore to meet up with Karen, Clara, Janice and Audrey. Most of the photos here are courtesy of Janice. πŸ™‚

The objective was to check out the flea market, but after our tea session at Jones the Grocer, most of the shops had closed! None of us realized that the flea closes at 6pm. πŸ˜›

Nonetheless, that didn’t stop us from checking out the Beauty Emporium, where we had a ball of a time browsing through beauty products while Janice had her brows done. It was her virgin experience!

The Beauty Emporium is apparently the world’s first one-stop shop for all your beauty and nutritional needs. I was overwhelmed by the wide selection of beauty products which is not commonly found in departmental stores, and….surprise, surprise….books too!

Yes, Books Actually (their main shop is located at Club Street) is a tenant here as well. I’ve always been a fan of their unique collection of books and antique collectibles sourced from overseas.

I also love how the beauty products are neatly lined on refrigerated shelves, not unlike food products at the supermarket.

Our final shot before we headed to Ayam Bakar at Lucky Plaza for dinner

Ayam Bakar is an Indonesian restaurant that I’ve been rather crazy about lately. You can read more about it in my previous entry here.

Not only is the Ayam Bakar dish delicious, I absolutely adore the Happy Soda too!

We ended the night in a typical girly fashion with a parting shot before we went our separate ways. Karen had to zip off to a friend’s birthday party, so there were only the 3 of us! Hope to meet up with the girls again soon!

Yummy Snacks from Sun Moulin

June 4, 2010 by Regina Chow No Comments
Sun Moulin is one of my favourite bakeries in town. It is conveniently located beside Isetan at Shaw Centre and serves freshly made pastries as well as delectable Japanese desserts. Ironically, I never took notice of the desserts until recently. Well, there’s no turning back now!
I purchased their strawberry sandwich, mango soft omelet (swiss roll) and sakura daifuku, all of which were really delicious!

The fresh cream was light and not overpoweringly sweet, allowing the natural sweetness and flavour of the fruits to shine through.

The daifuku’s soft and floury exterior as well as generous red bean filling with a hint of sakura made it an absolute delight to devour!
