Fashion Fridays: Ancient Chinese Village Xiema Bridge

November 6, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Today’s Fashion Fridays post marries both my love for travel and fashion. Traveling around China for the past 2 months has given me a glimpse into the lives of the Chinese, their thoughts and reflections on how they are progressing in the global arena, and more importantly, what their dreams and aspirations are.
This is one of the reasons why I enjoy traveling for an extended period of time. I relish the opportunity to live among the locals and
truly immerse myself in a completely different culture and environment, propelling me to open my eyes and mind to fresh, new perspectives.
For
the average man on the street here, traveling overseas remains a dream,
and in their quest to better their lives, you can feel
their hunger and drive for success, a commendable quality that seems to
be fading into oblivion in Singapore. It appears that we have forgotten how privileged we truly are in the grand scheme of things and have
begun to take our nation’s stability and prosperity for granted. Sometimes I wonder, have we transformed into frogs in wells?
Perhaps
it is time for us to step out of our comfort zones and experience
living (and not just traveling for a week or two) in a less privileged
city. Perhaps only then will we be able to appreciate what we have back
home. Go back to basics and live in a rural town, or travel to preserved ancient villages, some of which are still occupied by villagers.

Entrance of Xiema Bridge Village
Preserved ancient villages are popular tourist attractions in China. I much prefer ancient villages to museums. Not only can you marvel at the beautiful architecture that reflect rich historical and cultural roots, taking a stroll in these villages gives you a peek into ancient China and transports you to a bygone era.
Ancient waterway at Xiema Bridge
Xiema Bridge village is an ancient village located in Jia Chuan Town in the city of Kunshan. One of the 120 preserved villages in Kunshan, it was formerly known as Wang village and was a bustling trading hub.
Buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Xiema Bridge built by war hero Han Shi-zong and the 500 metre long flagstone road are all painstakingly preserved in Xiema Bridge village.
Preserved houses from the Ming & Qing Dynasty

300 year old boxwood tree planted during Emperor Kangxi period in the Qing Dynasty
Preserved backyard from the Ming/Qing Dynasty (chair appears to be a mid 20th-century design)
Preserved houses from the Ming & Qing Dynasties

Unlike
its more touristy counterparts, Xiema bridge is an oasis of
tranquility. A few villagers still live here and there are hardly any tourists around, hence you can soak in
the beauty of this slice of history at a leisurely, unhurried pace.
Here’s what I wore:
Top and pants from Chinese Designer “Have Rice”

Minimalist chic with a twist (background: Xiema Bridge)
I have been checking out several Chinese designers via Taobao recently and Have Rice饭馆 is one of my favourites. Its selection of basic pieces with a twist, such as this unique cross-over panel culottes, caught my attention immediately and the fit is great for petite ladies too. I am officially a fan!
Now, who said greys and blacks had to be dull and boring?

I hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of Fashion Fridays! Have an amazing weekend ahead!

Fashion Fridays: Spicing Up an All-Black Outfit

October 30, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Do you have a uniform that you turn to on days when you feel like you have nothing to wear? I do, and it helps me look presentable on days when I am feeling lazy or simply do not have the time to make a conscious effort to coordinate my outfit before heading out.
My everyday uniform is solely made up of shades of black, grey and beige. Isn’t my wardrobe boring without colours? I used to think that way too, but various textures and prints in monochromatic and neutral shades have proven me wrong. Hopefully this all-black OOTD that I’m sharing with you today will prove you wrong too.

To say I love my blacks is an understatement. Black occupies the bulk of my wardrobe now and naturally, I pack a lot of black with me when I travel. Case in point – I packed this black outfit with me during my recent trip to Shanghai and it is one of my favourite lazy day outfits.
What makes an all-black outfit interesting?
Textures, textures, textures. In my opinion, the easiest way to play up a single colour outfit is to mix and match textures.
The juxtaposition of black pleather with black fur amps up the glam factor instantly while my trusty ripped Frame Denim jeans and New Balance sneakers add a touch of casual chic to the ensemble.
When you put several stand-out textures together, accessorizing becomes unnecessary. All I did was to top it off with a cap, which is the best accessory for lazy days as it hides your out-of-bed hair, shields your face from the sun and pulls your outfit together without any hassle.

If you have any other tips for spicing up all-black outfits, do share them with me!
For now, I’ll be capping off (pun intended) this post with a photo of JW and I on a cruise along Huangpu River.
If you don’t already know by now, he’s usually the man behind the camera, and a very talented camera man at that although he claims he abhors photography. Don’t you also agree that he is more photogenic than I am? His winning million-dollar smile and sharp features can do no wrong, plus he has absolutely no bad angles to speak of. He’s my better half in every sense of the word and while he is everything that I am not, he completes me and makes me a better person everyday.
Thanks for reading and here’s wishing everyone a lovely weekend with your loved ones!

Fashion Fridays: Sporty Minimalist OOTD

October 23, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
The minimalist
look is a classic look that never goes out of style. Less is more, as
the minimalist chic outfit is all about comfort and clean lines. It may
sound a tad boring to some, but the minimalist wardrobe provides a blank canvas for experimentation, making it
possible to inject some fun into the whole minimalism game with
different style influences.

 Today’s
Fashion Fridays post is all about the sporty minimalist look. After
living out
of a suitcase for more than a month now, I have ditched my heels in
favour of comfortable sneakers and sports shoes for practical reasons. I
walk a lot in China and the terrain is not exactly ideal for heels. Trust me, you wouldn’t want to risk ruining your loubies or Valentinos here.

I have gradually
fallen in love with the sporty minimalist look, pairing my running shoes
with simple, functional minimalist pieces, such as this grey knit top
and skirt set, that are a tad more stylish than your typical track suits
and sweat pants. This look marries style with comfort, and in my
personal opinion, is great for those of you who travel frequently and
wish to pack light.
One
of the perks of the minimalist style is that you can create a variety
of looks simply by picking out a few tops and bottoms in neutral shades
or monochromatic hues. You’ll definitely get more mileage out of your
suitcase and more importantly, paying for excess baggage will fast
become a thing of the past!
What do you think of this look?
Thanks for reading and have a great weekend ahead!

Fashion Fridays: 5 Tips for Styling the Little Black Dress for Fall

October 16, 2015 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
One of the perks of living in a country with four seasons is the endless recipes for personal style. As temperatures dip in Nanjing, I’m all ready to welcome early fall with open arms as it marks the start of the layering season. If you’re interested in how I go about styling my fall and winter outfits, do stay tuned to my Fashion Fridays series every week.
This week, I’ll be sharing more about how I styled everyone’s favourite little black dress for fall. In early fall, temperatures in the day range from 21-26 degrees while temperatures in the night are within the range of 13-18 degrees.

How do you wear the little black dress out without catching a cold at night and still look presentable?
Here are 5 tips from experience:
1. Go for light knit dresses
Light knit dresses are more versatile than their thicker counterparts as you can roll up the sleeves easily in the day when it gets too warm. Another bonus point – you won’t look like a dumpling even after layering when it gets colder.
2. The devil is in the details
This
little black knit dress featured here has cut-out details at the
shoulders (i.e. cold-shoulder style) that add interest to the outfit.
Wear it on its own in the day and throw on a jacket in the evening for a
different look (and also to brave the cold winds of course).

3. Wear a hat
Always
wear a hat out during fall. It helps to shield your face from the sun
in the day and also keeps you warm at night. Plus, it amps up the chic
factor.

4. Wear slightly sheer stockings
Don’t go for the full-on fur lined stockings for fall or you’ll risk sweating buckets in the day. I
prefer to pair slightly sheer black stockings with my little black
dress for both style and practicality. The juxtaposition of opaque black
against slightly sheer black lends dimension to the outfit, so even
though you’re clad in black from head to toe, it doesn’t shout
b-o-r-i-n-g.
Gentle
reminder – don’t go for stockings that are too translucent unless tacky
is your thing and you are not afraid of the cold at night.

5. Go for genuine leather footwear
Genuine
leather footwear is not only more comfortable, they are also more
breathable and versatile. Leather shoes keep your feet cool and dry in
the day, yet sufficiently warm at night.

Coming
from a country that is sunny all year round, I have to admit I am still
wrapping my head around the basic principles of layering, especially
when there are drastic differences in day and night-time temperatures. I am learning as I go along and I hope this post will come in useful for those of you who are traveling to colder countries at this time of the year. If you do have
any other tips, feel free to share them with me too!
Happy Friday and here’s wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall

October 1, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

The
Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall was one of the attractions that I
intended to visit during my stay in Nanjing, along with a list of other
historical spots such as the Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum, Ming City Walls and the Temple of Confucius.

I have always been fascinated with history and culture, but my
interest in Chinese history was piqued after watching a drama series on
Empress Wu, starring Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing (if you have yet to
watch it, please do!). Nanjing is definitely one of the best Chinese
cities to visit due to its rich history and culture, having been the
capital of China for many years in the past.

I was amazed by how well documented the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall was. In my opinion, it is one of the best war museums I have ever visited globally.

Photography may be prohibited inside the museum but the brutality of the event was recorded through detailed accounts from survivors and powerful yet graphic images of the atrocities committed by the invading Japanese troops, including exposed remains and skeletons of the dead. Everything remains fresh in my memory till this day.

What struck me most was how the seemingly grim and solemn atmosphere transformed into one of hope for our future generations at the end; hope that peace would prevail and that mankind would learn from our mistakes and continue to step up on our peacekeeping efforts to keep our world safe and free from war.

Hopefully, Japan’s march back to militarism will not jeopardize the peace and stability that we have been taking for granted all this while.

Towards the end of the tour, we walked into a meditation hall filled with candles to pray for those who lost their lives in this event.

I was deeply moved by the Chinese prayer at the end of the room. Unfortunately, I felt that while the English translation captured the gist, it didn’t bring out the essence and beauty of the prayer:

Let the white bones fall asleep

Let the grieving souls rest in peace

Turn the slaughtering sword to the cast of a warning bell

May the names of the departed be engraved in history

Let the children no longer have to be in fear

Let mothers no longer shed tears

Let war be distant from all mankind

Let peace spread fully to the world.

The statue of Peace marks the end of the tour, against the backdrop of white doves taking to the skies above, leaving you in amazement and wonder as you step out of the premises feeling a sense of renewed hope.

I was just sharing on instagram (@reginachow_sg) about how grateful I am to be given the opportunity to learn more about my roots in such a fun and engaging way during my stay in Nanjing. Before I came over, I was told that there was nothing much to do or see in this city, but I am glad that this hypothesis has been proven wrong on several fronts.

Having lived here for a while now, I have come to realise that Nanjing is one of the most liveable cities in China, complete with good food, friendly people (still, please beware of pickpockets in crowded areas), and beautiful places of attraction that are steeped in history.

Don’t get me wrong. I still miss home (not the haze though) because there’s no place like home and I still intend to shuttle between both cities, but for now Nanjing seems like quite the perfect home away from home.

Stay tuned to this space for more updates on what I’m up to, or if you prefer live updates, follow me on instagram!

Fashion: Minimalist Matching Sets & Life In Nanjing

September 15, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
For ease of travel and packing, my minimalist wardrobe now comprises several matching sets and comfy flats or sneakers. I
never used to like sneakers but the Adidas Stan Smith collection caught
my eye and had me head over heels in love, so much so I had to get them
in both white and navy. The slim cut is a refreshing change from the
classic Adidas Superstar range (and more sleek in my opinion). The fact
that it is made from genuine leather also gives you unparalleled comfort
without compromising on style.
Today, I will be sharing with you some minimalist looks featuring my trusty Adidas sneakers and matching top and bottom sets.

Cap from Brian Lichtenberg
Bag from Givenchy
Sneakers from Adidas Stan Smith
Shades from Marc by Marc Jacobs

Top and shorts set from MURUA
Flats from Pazzion

 If
you have been following me on instagram (@reginachow_sg) or Facebook here, you would
have realized that I am currently in Nanjing. I am on sabbatical this
year and will be shuttling between Singapore and China (yes, my blog
will still be active!) as JW is based in Nanjing for the coming year.
 What
a whirlwind the past few months has been. Thankfully, we are settling
in well and we are finally getting the hang of things. Besides improving
my grasp of the Chinese language and mastering the art of Taobao
shopping without the use of agents, traveling ranks high on my
priorities this year and I hope to explore as many cities as I possibly
can. Some cities on my bucket list are Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu,
Mongolia and Tibet. I also plan to visit North Korea and Russia if time
permits.

For now, I can’t wait to explore Nanjing and the many
historical sites it has to offer. If you have any suggestions on where
to go or places to visit, please let me know!

Fashion: Styling The Vest (Minimalist Look)

August 25, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
Vests are my favourite outerwear as they make layering possible in our humid climate. Cardigans and jackets may be stylish but are best reserved for the cinemas, official work meetings or freezing lecture theatres, unless of course you think sweating buckets can help you to lose weight.
How do you style a vest? There are many ways to style it as it is very versatile and goes well with shorts, skirts, pants and even dresses. In fact, adding interest to a casual outfit has never been easier with a trusty vest.

I picked up this long flowy white vest from Topshop when I was shopping in London and to tell you the truth, I have been working this vest really hard as it hasn’t had time to sit in my wardrobe for more than a couple of days. I am convinced that it is a worthwhile wardrobe investment and today, I’ll show you two ways to style this wardrobe workhorse.
Styling the Vest with Jeans/Pants
With so many errands to run on a daily basis, my preferred ensemble these days comprises a comfy tank top and jeans paired with sneakers. The tank top and jeans combination is a full-proof combo but it can get a tad boring. Throw on a vest to shake things up a little and watch as your outfit transforms right before your eyes!

Tank top from Mphosis
Jeans from Frame Denim (Shopbop)
Vest from Topshop
Shoes from Adidas
Bag from Givenchy
Styling The Vest with Dresses

If you prefer a dressier look, try styling the vest with a dress (pun unintended). I like my white vest with classic black dresses as it instantly jazzes up the otherwise plain outfit.

These photos were taken when I was down with a bad flu in Copenhagen. I looked pale as a sheet but the warmth of the sun and the dose of white put some colour back in my cheeks. I would have looked far worse if I was clad in an all-black dress without my white vest.

Dress from Acne Studios
Vest from Topshop
Sunglasses from Marc by Marc Jacobs

Now, I am sure it is not hard to see why vests are fast becoming my wardrobe staples. The key to styling vests is to pair them up with simple, basic everyday pieces. I have been falling back on sleeveless dresses and tank tops but vests complement long sleeve tops and sweaters too.
I promise this wouldn’t be the last time that you’ll see of my vests in this space as I’m about to experience autumn and winter in a foreign land this year. More updates on that in time to come, but meanwhile, have a great week ahead!

Travel: Scenic Day Trips from Gold Coast

July 20, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
If you have had enough of the beach and theme parks are not your cup of tea, you can consider taking a day trip from Gold Coast to get closer to nature. These are just some of the day trips (and super easy hikes) that we took during our recent trip in May. There are many more hidden gems within the Gold Coast hinterland so go on, take the road less traveled and explore to your heart’s content!
1. Cedar Creek Falls & Tamborine Mountain
Tamborine Mountain is home to several waterfalls and rockpools. To get there, head north from Gold Coast. Tamborine Mountain is 36km from Southpart via the Pacific Highway and Oxenford-Tamborine Road or 28km from Nerang via Nerang-Beaudesert Road.

Cedar Creek Falls is very accessible and only a short 30-minute hike from the carpark. The path is well paved with wooden steps and is an easy route for non-hikers too.
You can even take a dip or swim here if you like but do watch out for danger signs as parts of the falls are not meant for swimming.

On the way to Cedar Creek Falls, you can also stop by Mt Tamorine Village for a quick bite at one of the cafes within these quaint and pretty houses.

2. Byron Bay
Byron Bay needs
little to no introduction. A popular spot among locals and tourists
alike, I’ve heard so much about its beauty long before I visited its
iconic lighthouse.

It takes just slightly over an hour’s drive from Gold Coast via the Pacific Motorway and is very accessible by car. There is a little ice-cream parlour near the lighthouse, so you can just sit back and relax with dessert (who says no to ice-cream??) as you take in the beautiful panoramic views atop Byron Bay.

 3. Natural Bridge
Pictures do not do Natural Bridge justice, and you really have to be there physically to witness the beauty bestowed upon us by Mother Nature in its full glory.
Located at Springbrook National Park, the easy hike which only spans about 30 minutes to and fro is an absolutely rewarding one especially when you approach Natural Bridge, a natural phenomenon formed by the force of the waterfall over an erosive basalt cave.
To get to Springbrook National Park from Gold Coast, use the Pacific Motorway, exit at Mudgeeraba and follow the Gold Coast-Springbrook Road.
If you love scenic drives, you have to drive up to Springbrook National Park. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the drive as the breathtaking scenery along the way reminded us of New Zealand and Southern France.
Planning a trip to Gold Coast? I hope you found this post useful.
Here are my previous posts on Gold Coast too for your reference:

Have fun!

Purple Balayage Hair & Tips to Maintain Your Hair Colour

July 16, 2015 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Ever since my trusty hairstylist Michelle gave me pink highlights earlier this year, I’ve been wanting to up the game with something a little more adventurous.

I always give Michelle free rein to do whatever she wants with my hair and this time, she gave me beautiful purple balayage.

What exactly is balayage?
Unlike traditional highlights or ombre hair, balayage is a technique of hair colouring where the dye is applied to the surface of your hair and only becomes saturated at the tips.
What I like about balayage is that you can get a smooth transition between two completely different colours. Minimal maintenance is required as there isn’t an obvious regrowth line, unless you have a lighter base colour.

Now, here’s the catch. Bold hair colours like pink and purple usually do not last more than a couple of weeks.
I should probably thank my lucky stars because my pink highlights from April never budged and were only further enhanced by the purple balayage. Other than giving Lady Luck full credit for this, I am pretty certain that my haircare regime plays an important role in keeping my hair colour fresh.
Good things ought to be shared, so I thought I’d share some haircare tips for maintaining your hair colour too.

6 Tips for Maintaining your Hair Colour
 1. Never shampoo your hair immediately after a colouring job – Give your hair a full day to absorb the dye. Your hair colour will also last longer if you wash it less, but I wouldn’t recommend this in our humid climate.
2. Avoid shampoos and conditioners with sulfates –  I have been using sulfate-free haircare for more than a year now. Sulfates are known to strip your hair of moisture, oil and colour, so if you want your hair colour to last, avoid them at all cost.
3. Protect your hair from UV rays – I use a leave-in conditioner with UV protection on a daily basis. UV rays are harmful not just to your skin, but to your hair too, especially coloured hair.
4. Rinse your hair with cold water – Hair colours last longer when you rinse your hair with cold water as warmer temperatures cause hair colour to fade.
5. Avoid haircare products with alcohol (especially ethanol, SD Alcohol,  SD Alcohol 40, Alcohol denat,  Propanol, Propyl Alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol) – Alcohol strips your hair of its colour and causes it to be dry and frizzy. The types of alcohol stated above are commonly found in hair styling products.
6. Avoid heat styling tools – My hair is naturally straight and I wear sponge curlers to sleep when I want my hair to be curly. I steer away from curling tongs and straighteners as the heat again causes hair colour to fade quickly.
This is what my sponge curlers look like:
credit: Wikipedia
Definitely can’t sleep with these as they’re made of plastic and much harder:
Aside from my haircare regime, I have to thank Michelle for taking such good care of my crowning glory. The strawberry hair treatment is my personal favourite as it keeps my hair soft and smooth for several months.
I can’t wait to visit Michelle at her own salon when I am back in town but from now till August, you can still book an appointment with her at Jeric Bugis and say hello to beautiful hair!

Fashion Fridays: Summer Outfits To Beat the Heat

July 10, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Long breezy tunics, shorts, rompers and gladiator sandals are my summer must-haves. When temperatures soar and the weather gets insanely hot, beating the heat in comfortable clothes becomes my top priority.

I love how long tunics like this white sleeveless top from Zara are more stylish and versatile than the average tank top. Achieving different looks with a top like this is an effortless task as it can be styled tucked out or in. I can totally picture myself pairing this with my white ripped jeans from Frame Denim instead of denim shorts when I travel to cooler climates.

I can never get enough of rompers too. They’re ideal for lazy days or days when the heat gets unbearable (which is practically everyday now). I favour rompers with cute prints like this popsicle print romper in sweet candy colours. And of course, I had to match it with my milk carton bag that Karen gifted me.

Sunset is also my favourite colour and I adore how it casts a soft glow to photographs. We managed to catch the last rays of sunlight last weekend and I couldn’t be more grateful.

If you haven’t already realized, gladiator sandals are now my summer staple. I never fail to reach for them when I am in shorts or rompers as they dress up my bare legs and add balance to the overall ensemble, revealing just the right amount of skin while keeping me cool at the same time.

What about you? What are your summer staples to beat the crazy heat?
