Fashion: Neutral Minimalist & Fashion Steps Out 2016

March 25, 2016 by Regina Chow No Comments
Black, grey and neutral shades form the foundation for a minimalist wardrobe. I used to think neutral colours such as beige were boring, but I couldn’t be more wrong.
Just as how grey comes in 50 shades (or more), beige too doesn’t disappoint where the colour wheel is concerned. I came across this simplified colour chart from fellow blogger Glam and City, and gosh, just look at how many neutral shades there are!
Credit: Glam And City
It is amazing just how many looks you can pull off when you have a wardrobe filled with pieces in these colours. You’ll never look like a clown again, even if you decide to pick out an outfit with your eyes closed.

Take this outfit that I put together over the weekend as an example. I paired my tan culottes with a nude top that came with choker-like details and an asymmetrical hem, not forgetting my trusty New Balance sneakers in beige.
Not too shabby an ensemble isn’t it? The tonal contrast added dimension to the nude-on-nude outfit while the little details and tailored silhouettes amped up the style factor.

It is no secret now that I am a minimalist convert, and if you need more reasons to convince yourself to make the switch, perhaps you may wish to read my previous article on minimalism here:
Why I Adopted the Minimalist Style

Crabtree & Evelyn Pop-Up Cafe at Paragon

September 2, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Have you visited Crabtree & Evelyn’s first pop-up cafe at Paragon Shopping Centre Atrium?

Having afternoon tea with scones or cookies in an English tearoom overlooking lush greenery may seem like an impossible dream on this sunny island, but Crabtree & Evelyn brought that dream to life right in the heart of town.
Yes, from now till 3 Sep (tomorrow’s the last day!), you can enjoy afternoon tea in a quintessentially English inspired garden any time from 10am to 10pm.

Think manicured
lawns, box hedges and a royal garden swing where you can swing your
troubles away as you sip on Crabtree & Evelyn’s fine selection of
tea blends and nibble on some scones or cookie — the perfect haven for pure relaxation and indulgence.

I had the pleasure of attending the media preview of Crabtree & Evelyn’s pop-up cafe last week and the beautiful set up was such a lovely sight to behold. Despite being in a shopping mall, I was instantly transported to an English tearoom set against the backdrop of a stunning garden. It was as if time stood still in this sanctuary as the outside world rushed by.
Guests were also treated to a watercolour painting session, where we could each paint a tea cup design of our choice.

The last time I held a paintbrush was eons ago and while it took me some time to get the hang of it, I found it very enjoyable and even somewhat therapeutic.

I was away for a period of time and have been terribly busy since I returned to Singapore. Fortunately, this event also gave me an opportunity to catch up with Karen before we take off once again.

Before long, it was time to put down our paintbrushes and indulge in Crabtree & Evelyn’s Fine Food Collection. All of us were handsomely rewarded with scones, cookies and fine English tea. Oh, please pardon my amateurish painting in the background.

At $10 per set, you too can enjoy biscuits with tea or preserve served with a scone and tea at this gorgeous English garden cafe.
Getting away from the maddening Orchard Road crowd for a moment of peace and serenity is now made possible at Crabtree & Evelyn’s pop-up cafe. It closes its doors to the public tomorrow (3rd September), so go on, head on down for some pampering today!

Fashion Fridays: Nine West Spring Summer Collection 2015

July 24, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
Nine West shoes have always been known for their classic designs, comfort and quality. In fact, my very first pair of leather high heel work pumps came from Nine West and they were so durable and comfy, it took me a long time to wear them out.

Fast
forward many years down the road and I am still an ardent fan of Nine
West. I attended their Spring Summer Collection preview at their new Suntec branch a couple of months back and couldn’t be more thrilled to see how the brand has reinvented
itself with bright bursts of colours and sporty elements as the sports luxe look gains widespread popularity.

Think flatforms, colourful loafers and wedges that can easily incorproate into your weekend wardrobe for a casual chic look infused with athletic vibes.
My favourite pair in the collection has got to be this pair of stylish white and gold brogues. I made a mental note to purchase it on my next visit and I really need to make time to pop by soon.
Summer just isn’t summer without pastels and florals, and Nine West knows just that. These dainty pastel heels with intricate floral details and diamontes are the perfect accompaniment to your summer wardrobe. They come with matchy-matchy bags too so you can easily complete your summer look!
Nine West’s Spring Summer Collection is now available at all stores island-wide. Since it’s summer all year round in Singapore, it’s never too late to update your wardrobe with these gorgeous finds!
Happy Shopping!

Fashion Fridays: Fashion Steps Out 2015 @ Orchard

June 12, 2015 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
Encapsulating vibrancy, bustle, and an intoxicating mix of fashion, cuisine and action, world-renowned Orchard Road was host to traffic-stopping style at the Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard event.
Singapore’s renaissance has been 50 years in the making, and the fashion mecca of Singapore was the hotbed for fashionistas, celebrities and models as the entire road was transformed into a giant catwalk showcasing some of the best Asian designers.

Presented
by Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) and supported by Singapore Tourism
Board and MasterCard, well-known Singaporean celebrities such as Paige Chua (in
white), Belinda Lee (in black) and Ya Hui (in yellow) graced this exciting
annual fashion affair that is into its sixth year.
“With 2015 marking Singapore’s Jubilee year, Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) rounded up some of our nation’s most celebrated designers and curated a visionary SG Next50 collection for Samsung Fashion Steps Out 2015. The SG Next50 collection was presented at Singapore’s longest catwalk, the iconic Orchard Fashion Runway, together with a showcase of Spring/Summer 2015 collections, which will be available in our Orchard Road stores,” said Mr Mark Shaw, Chairman of ORBA.
“ORBA remains committed to making fashion accessible to all, and our six-week long fashion extravaganza offers something for every visitor to Orchard Road,” he added.
The six-week fashion season encompasses a whole host of activities and shopping rewards to celebrate fashion. Regina and myself were excited to attend the exclusive Fashion Party set within a garden at ION Orchard prior to the glitzy Runway show. The garden featured whimsical swings, a gorgeous swan feature and even a real butterfly garden!
Regina’s outfit matched perfectly with the garden swan theme, hence these beautiful photos of her OOTDs. You can also check out her full OOTD in her previous post here.
As the evening set in, we made our way to the unique lighted stools that lined the road catwalk. All vehicular traffic was stopped specially for this event, and a record number of 176 models showcased the stylish creations along the length of Orchard Road, including the grand opening segment presented by Samsung.

Large poster trucks drove down the road and then stopped in front of the VIP guests, and models stepped out to ambient music as celebrity host and model Junita Simon announced the start of the fashion show.
Said Eugene Goh, Vice President, IT and Mobile, Samsung Electronics Singapore, “Samsung.. believes in finding the perfect blend of beautiful craftsmanship and purpose, similar to how the designers are pushing the boundaries of fashion.”
This year, the thematic catwalk display featured the latest designs from 13 brands: Aimer, Ashley Isham, DEPRESSION, FOX Kids, Francis Cheong, Germain, Mary Katrantzou, max.tan, Moiselle, PAUL, PAULINE.NING, Pleatation and Sean & Sheila.
These included 50 special looks created by acclaimed local Singaporean designers to commemorate SG50, and five celebrated local designers with diverse styles – Francis Cheong, Max Tan, Chiang Xiao Jun of Pleatation, PAULINE.NING and Kenny Lim of DEPRESSION – presented a forward-looking collection representative of their outlook of SG Next50 years.
The looks incorporated show-stopping concepts into wearable pieces (I would definitely wear quite a few of the pieces for work and after-hours!), showcasing the versatility and modernity of the SG Next50 interpretations. I was also impressed with the thought-provoking sharing by the designers on the inspiration behind their collections.
Clean lines, flowy details and minimalistic designs are the essence of PAULINE.NING’s SG Next50 Fashion Futurism Collection. (FashionStepsOut)
“We’re inspired by the key dates in Singapore history. We want to look forward but at the same time, not forgetting the past.” – Kenny and Andrew, the creatives behind the local brand DEPRESSION (FashionStepsOut)
“My collection is to reflect the nation’s even more sophisticated brighter future in fashion and beyond,” says Francis Cheong – the soul behind the modern and dreamy designs in the SG Next50: Fashion Futurism collection. (FashionStepsOut)
“I feel humbled by this opportunity to be able to celebrate SG50 with my own creative discipline together with other creatives. My home has provided me with opportunities to grow the brand.” – Max Tan on his creations with his own label in the SG Next50: Fashion Futurism collection.(FashionStepsOut)
“My collection is drawn with inspiration to a reflection of an individual’s inner self. I believe that how one portrays himself on the outer self, may be different from his inner self.” – Chiang Xiaojun on her creations with Pleatation in the SG Next50: Fashion Futurism collection. (FashionStepsOut)
The many beautiful fashion creations by the designer maestros were a gorgeous concoction of concept fashion and wearable fashion, and the catwalk was complemented with a touch of whimsy as the Road burst into color during numerous segments, such as when models sashayed down with balloons….
and when models showed the audience what living in the tropics was all about!
This year was also the first time that children’s wear was featured, and the cute child models for FOX Kids aged four to eight years old took to the streets in multi-coloured fashion and balloons, eliciting squeals from the adoring audience. The 40 child models were in fact chosen for a fun-filled taste of modelling through a contest ran by FOX Kids in March.
Ashley Isham, world-renowned Singapore designer, has indeed been one of the key fashion maestros in putting Singapore onto the fashion world map, and his Fall / Winter 2015 collection was showcased to much anticipation, hot off the runway from the recent London Fashion Week.
The catwalk had some stunning pieces, and the tongue-in-cheek signages with traffic references such as “Give way to models” and “Look out for fashion police” added to the impact of the entire “road show” (pardon the pun!)
After the show, we were also treated to a special extended time of shopping at the Mandarin Gallery, with special shopping and dining privileges for that evening. Deborah Heng, Group Head and General Manager of MasterCard Singapore said, “MasterCard data show that over sixty percent of consumers do shop offline despite the popularity of online shopping, which shows that the in-store experience is still strongly valued… we are pleased to cardholders offer even greater rewards for shopping along Singapore’s iconic Orchard Road.”
As Ms Tan Yen Nee, Director, Lifestyle Precincts Development, Singapore Tourism Board, shared, “The sixth edition of Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard looks set to enliven Singapore’s iconic shopping belt, with a variety of lifestyle experiences to enjoy.. and in commemoration of SG50, FSO will feature even more local designers and fashion this year.. (including) the Merlion as fashion muse. These element will certainly add another dimension of authenticity and fun for visitors and locals.”
It was an impactful evening, from the scale and scope of the entire event, to the magnitude of the concept and ideology driving the showcase of Singapore as an iconic and cosmopolitan destination. Thank you once again to STB, ORBA, Samsung and MasterCard for the invite, and cheers to great success!

Svenson Trichology Hair Products Review

May 25, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
[This post was written by Isabelle, a permanent writer on Shopping Queen’s Haven.]

Isn’t it true that hair completes a look? Perhaps that’s why we always bemoan bad hair days, as we instinctively feel the difference that great hair makes us look and feel.
It was therefore a pleasure to learn more about hair care and hair health from Svenson, the leading expert in solutions in hair and scalp problems with over 40 years of trichological expertise and knowledge. The scalp is actually an extension of our skin, so just as we spend lots of time and effort on our facial care and body care, we should not neglect our scalp. And indeed we’ll be thankful for it later when we do not need to battle hair loss problems, but enjoy the benefits of luscious, healthy, shiny hair!
Debunking Hair Myths
During the Svenson expert talk, they did a careful analysis of my hair and scalp, and also shared many professional tips that debunk hair myths we might have believed in.
Did you know that it is recommended to use combs with wooden bristles, as plastic bristles cause greater static and frizz? When applying styling products, you should also avoid getting them onto the scalp. Also, always wash your hair daily, especially in our hot and humid weather.
I have to admit that many years of hair dye and perms have inevitably caused damage to my hair. More importantly, I also need to continue to take care of my scalp to ensure my hair follicles can grow healthily.
That explained why I was really excited to try the treatments and shampoos, and immediately tried the entire regime as soon as I got home after the Svenson event.

Svenson Trichology Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Firstly, I applied the Svenson Trichology Pre-Shampoo Treatment to unwashed scalp, section by section. Then I used my fingertips to gently massage it into my scalp, left it for 2 minutes, and rinsed it off. So simple!
During the 2 minutes, what did I do? I was reading the label (I really like reading up on products): Svenson products are a concentrated blend of carefully selected botanicals and protective herbs combined with advanced bio-chemical technology, designed to help you achieve healthy scalp and strong beautiful hair. Sounds promising.
Svenson Volumizing Shampoo
Next, I started my hair wash. All it took was a small amount (around 50 cent size) of the Volumizing Shampoo rubbed in palm to create a very nice lather that I massaged through from scalp to ends, then washed.
I loved how the rich lather thoroughly cleansed my hair and scalp without stripping my hair of its natural oils.

Svenson PLGA Total Solution
And finally, the crowning jewel : Svenson’s PLGA Total Solution!
It is one of Svenson’s best-selling hair care treatments, and is a breakthrough Do-It-Yourself home treatment that combines remarkable properties of the rare Loquat leaf and nanotechnology to produce noticeably thicker, fuller-looking hair for those suffering from thinning hair.
The key active compound extracted from the Loquat leaf is Corosolic acid, traditionally used as a herbal medicine. It encourages better blood circulation and manages testosterone level, often the primary cause of hair loss.
The PLGA Total Solution is to be applied daily after hair wash using a light head massage on problem areas, and a typical complete treatment process will take six months of consistent application. But the great news is, from as early as two months, a gradual increase in fine hair growth at alopecia neurotic areas might start to appear.

Do the products work?

Every time after I wash my hair, I experience a huge amount of hair fall. When I shared my concerns with the Svenson Expert, I was assured that hair fall after each hair wash is normal. We should not be afraid to wash our hair daily simply because we are worried about the amount of hair fall each time. After all, as they shared, the hair would fall, regardless of wash or not. Instead, washing daily and then applying the treatment is the proper way to treat and regain healthy scalp and hair. This was indeed reassuring to hear!
And the results speak for themselves. After I finished washing my hair and treating my scalp that night, I did my daily blow dry (remember not to sleep with a wet scalp), and I was so excited with the results that I immediately texted my friend to say it was amazing how my hair felt so light and bouncy. I could truly feel the difference. It was such a pity that night to sleep with my happy-looking hair (or rather, I was happy, haha!). I have been faithfully using the products these 3 weeks, and I can attest to the great results.
Besides using these products, I have been religiously following the Svenson 5-Step Massage to increase circulation, facilitate absorption and release tension.
Remember, do not hesitate to kick-start a good hair and scalp regime. You will certainly reap the benefits for a long time to come!

Fashion Fridays: REDValentino Takashimaya

May 15, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

REDValentino is one of my favourite brands. It epitomizes the feminine, preppy chic style peppered with quirky, whimsical elements.
“The REDValentino girl is an adventurer, a citizen of the world. She is
open minded and ironic, she speaks all the languages as she embodies the
contemporary. Intelligent and self-reliant, she likes to dare and to
rebel to common rules. She is a dreamer but has the capability of being
down to earth too. Inspired by the exciting new world unfolding around
her, she borrows bits and pieces and makes them her own.”
I always feel like I’ve walked into a fairy-tale when I step foot into a REDValentino store and the dreamlike experience continues in REDValentino’s third store in Singapore at Takashimaya, Ngee Ann City.

The new 116 square metre boutique, designed by Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Maison Valentino, currently stocks its Spring/Summer 2015 Collection.

White is the unifying theme for the store as it provides a blank canvas with which you can put together the outfit of your dreams and create your own fairy tale.
It is a place where you can unleash your imagination and let your dreams and aspirations of becoming a princess come alive.

Bold prints in nautical colours, dreamy pastels, floral prints, polka dots and tutu skirts are what you can expect from REDValentino’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection. These feminine, timeless styles are injected with a dash of playfulness and a sense of adventure that is unique only to the REDValentino girl.
Here are just some of my favourites (I would love to have them in my wardobe!):

Four Seasons Hotel: One-Ninety Wood-fired Steaks and Seafood Buffet

May 7, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

Buffets are usually known for quantity instead of quality, but in this day and age, discerning consumers value both qualities equally and Four Seasons Hotel’s One-Ninety Wood-fired Steaks and Seafood is one of the few places in Singapore that lets you have your cake and eat it.

I first had a taste of their Mezze Dinner Buffet (S$58++ including appetizer and dessert buffet spreads and one main course) earlier this year and I enjoyed it so much that I had to take JW there on a separate occasion.

Appetizer & Dessert Buffet

What I love about the appetizer and dessert buffet is that the extensive selection caters to all your whims and fancies. There is also an element of surprise as items are refreshed daily based on the freshest catch and produce, so you can expect nothing but the very best culinary offerings ranging from organic salads, cured meat, cheese, succulent seafood and exquisite desserts that promise to tantalize your taste buds.

I was blown away by the wide variety of seafood and organic vegetables. The prawns were very fresh and came with a hint of sweetness while the sweet cherry tomatoes oozed juicy goodness with every bite.

If you have a sweet tooth, you will be in for a treat at the dessert buffet which boasts a delectable array of cakes, bread and butter pudding (my personal favourite!), cookies and fresh fruits.

Main Courses

The main course menu features a sumptuous spread of cuisine wood-fired over the sweet aroma of apple wood.
Here’s what you can expect:
  • 120-day Grain-fed Steak Onglet
  • Sustainable Ahi Tuna Steak
  • Free-range Cajun-spiced Spring Chicken
  • Mediterranean Sea Bass Fillet
  • Grilled Ocean King Prawns and Calamari
  • Slow-roasted Japanese Pumpkin
  • Red Label Organic Salmon (add S$10)
  • Ranger Valley Wagyu 400-day Grain-fed Australian Rump (add S$10)
  • Black Angus Prime 200-day Grain-fed Beef Tenderloin (add S$32)
  • Baby Lamb Chops (add S$32)
If you are a meat lover, I would highly recommend the steaks here.I tried both the Wagyu Rump and Black Angus Prime on my first visit and I have to say they were well worth the top-up and calories. The Black Angus Prime was more tender, but both were equally succulent and tasty, with a delightful tinge of wood-fired flavour.

Black Angus Prime 200-Day Grain-Fed Beef Tenderloin

Good steaks are
hard to come by in Singapore, and given that JW is a huge fan of steak, I
insisted that he came along on my second visit. He too agreed that this was one of the best steaks he has tasted in Singapore.
On my second visit, I ordered the Grilled Ocean King Prawns and Calamari for my main course. I love seafood, and this dish has all the makings of the perfect dinner for a seafood lover. The King Prawns and calamari were very fresh and juicy, and the overall taste was enhanced with a slight hint of wood-fired flavour.

Some of the other ala-carte items that you have to try include the very fragrant truffle foccocia which was previously only reserved for VIPs.
Before the start of the meal, pamper yourself with Four Seasons Hotel Singapore’s signature Singapore Sangria, a cocktail that infuses flavours from Asian fruits such as dragonfruit, starfruit and lychee liquer. This delicious concoction was exclusively created for Four Seasons Hotel Singapore by Javier de las Muelas and can only be found on our sunny island. You could also pop by on Fridays for Happy Hour between 6-8pm and enjoy 1-for-1 on cocktails of your choice.
Aside from the delectable food and drinks, I truly appreciate the cozy and intimate ambience at One-Ninety, where you can catch glimpses of Executive Chef Giovanni Speciale, Senior Sous Chef Nicolas Owen and the team working their culinary magic as you just sit back, relax and indulge in the freshest and finest gastronomical fare. Definitely what I would consider as one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Innersense Spa & Wellness Facial Review

April 15, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments

To keep my skin in tip top condition, I stick to a regular beauty routine and make it a point to go for facials whenever I sense that my skin condition is less than satisfactory. Towards the end of last year, I had a sudden outbreak of oil seeds on my face resulting from a moisturizer that was way too rich and creamy for my oily skin.

Oil seeds are tough nuts to crack as they don’t go away on their own, hence extraction is necessary. Fortunately, one of my friends introduced me to Innersense Spa & Wellness, a beauty salon centrally located at Far East Plaza.

An oasis of peace and calm in the heart of bustling Orchard Road, the minimalist decor and warm ambiance at Innersense Spa & Wellness put me in a relaxed mood instantly.
My eyes lit up when I saw skincare products by French brand Payot on display. Payot is a staple in the French beauty scene and its products are commonly found in beauty salons. The brand’s commitment towards creating natural products from plant and marine extracts as well as minerals to minimize allergic reactions is commendable, and I certainly appreciate Innersense’s choice of skincare brand.

Ladies, did you know that your boyfriends and husbands can also treat themselves to a pampering facial or massage treatment with Payot’s Homme range at Innersense while you get your treatment done?

Before my treatment commenced, Cindy, the therapist, assessed my skin condition and gave me an overview of the proposed treatment customized for my skin type.

After a cup of warm tea and a change of attire, I was all ready to begin my treatment for the day.

These are the products that were used during the treatment.
Despite the fact
that many facial treatments have steered towards the use of machines in
place of manual extractions, I still believe that the human touch, especially manual extraction, is of
paramount importance and more effective for oil seeds, white heads and black heads removal.
I had expected to cringe in pain, as with most manual extractions, but I was in for a pleasant surprise. I hardly felt any pain as Cindy was extremely gentle with my skin and executed every move with utmost precision. The diamond dermabrasion machine was also used in tandem with manual extraction to expedite the unclogging process.

High frequency treatments are known for their anti-bacterial properties, hence this was administered after the extraction process to eliminate any bacteria and prevent infection. My treatment ended with a soothing hydration mask from Payot and a pampering lymphatic drainage massage using Meditrina’s Ageless Herbal Cream to remove toxins from the body.

I have always believed that every facial review should come along with before and after photos. I can go on and on, waxing lyrical about how effective a treatment is, but photos are proof that it truly works.

Here are my before and after photos. Both photos were taken with slightly different lighting but they have not been edited.

Can you tell that most of the bumps and oil seeds disappeared after just one session? The most amazing part was, I could immediately head out for dinner right after as there was no redness or swelling at all.

I have to thank Cindy for this as she did a terrific job of saving my skin!

Healthy Hair with Beijing 101 (Giveaway Included!)

April 8, 2015 by Regina Chow No Comments
To have healthy hair, you first need to have a healthy scalp. I can attest to
this from experience. I used to have sensitive scalp that itches from
time to time, but after regular scalp treatments over time and through
the use of suitable hair care products, this has since become a thing of
the past.
I am a firm believer of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Chinese herbs for scalp care because they truly work for me, hence when Beijing 101 invited me to their workshop at their Century Square outlet to find out more about their services, I said yes.
One common myth about hair care centres is that they are meant for the older generation, especially those with hair loss problems. Hair loss can occur at any age due to a variety of factors such as stress, changes in environment, illness, oily scalp or dandruff.
Hair care centres like Beijing 101 can help to keep your hair and scalp in the pink of health by diagnosing and treating scalp and hair problems. As we all know, prevention is always better than cure and the first step to preventing hair loss is to take good care of your scalp.
For 41 years, Beijing 101 has been solving hair problems by using treatments based on TCM principles. As Chinese herbs are able to treat the root of your hair problems and are gentle to the scalp, only premium Chinese herbs such as Dang Gui, Ginseng and He Shou Wu are used in Beijing 101’s treatments. These herbs are specially grown and harvested under highly regulated conditions. Beijing 101’s products are currently sold in over 60 countries including USA, England and Japan.
All hair care consultants at Beijing 101 are trained in TCM and are able to solve hair issues that affect both men and women. Through a detailed hair and scalp analysis, the hair care consultants are able to customize hair treatments that are tailored to your needs. You can also be assured of the quality of the treatments as a resident TCM physician can be found in every Beijing 101 outlet.
During the workshop, I was taken on a tour of the branch, where I had the opportunity to take a look at the individual consultation rooms, hair and scalp treatment areas.

I was also treated to a complimentary scalp scan at the end of the tour. While scalp scans are not new to me, this was the first time that my scalp scan results actually turned out better than expected.

Look, no more clogged hair follicles! Even then, I know I can’t afford to rest on my laurels and the only way to maintain a healthy scalp is to take good care of it. I was also told to go to bed earlier at night as there was some redness in my scalp.
