Summer Style 2011

July 18, 2011 by Regina Chow 3 Comments

The weather this summer has been a little unpredictable. It can be scorching hot today but raining cats and dogs the very next day.

Whatever the weather brings, a pop of colour always chases the gloom away. I always start with my favourite colour, pink.

By now, you would probably have guessed that the colour blocking trend is also my favourite summer trend because it is so easy to style and the cheerful kaleidoscope of colours never fails to make my day.

Here’re some of the summer styles that I personally dig.

1) Crochet – Crocheted Dress in Pink

I love the crochet details on this dress, which happens to be in line with the recent crochet trend too. This breezy number is perfect for lounging around and chilling out with your girlfriends on hot summer days. This dress is a steal at just S$29!

I paired my dress with mustard yellow suede heels from Zara.

Mustard seems to complement pink pretty well, such that both colours can shine without stealing the limelight from each other.

2) Chiffon Tops – Flared Chiffon Top in Pink

For unbearably hot days, you will definitely spot me in a comfortable camisole and shorts. I picked this top from ClubCouture because it exudes femininity and is so versatile it can be styled in various ways.

In this instance, I layered my top with a tube underneath and matched it with… yes, you guessed it, mustard shorts. πŸ˜‰

3) Creamy Whites – Tiered ruffled dress in cream

I fell head over heels with this tiered ruffled dress from ClubCouture’s latest collection, She Dreams of the Country.

It is made of lightweight, comfortable chiffon and is a classic piece that will never go out of style.

You can either dress it up with accessories, or just put on a pair of statement heels like I did. And there, you’re ready to take on the world.

For more inspirational looks, check out ClubCouture’s latest lookbook.

In addition, ClubCouture is currently offering free delivery on all orders, with no minimum spend!

Bangkok: Street Life

July 15, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
The streets of Bangkok are always bustling with life and colour. It is common to see street vendors everywhere peddling various types of exotic food as well as makeshift stalls selling lottery tickets. The way of life here is so different but its beauty lies in its simplicity.

When it comes to colour, pink is perhaps the most dominant hue in this city. There are pink taxis, pink buses, pink ATM machines, pink banks. As I walked down the streets, I would wonder if I was actually in Barbie’s home town (if such a place even exists!).

As we were there just before the elections took place, election posters lined every street and alley, adding a new dimension to the cityscape. It was an interesting sight to behold because instead of highlighting the representatives of the respective political parties, most of the posters featured babies or even animals such as dogs, pandas, buffaloes, monkeys and tigers!

These posters kept us entertained whenever we were stuck in traffic jams. What can I say? Creativity certainly runs in their blood!

Bangkok: Shopping at Jatuchak (Chatuchak) Market

July 14, 2011 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
Jatuchak Market, otherwise commonly known as Chatuchak among Singaporeans, is the most famous weekend market in Bangkok.

Renowned for its wide selection and variety of merchandise, you can find practically anything under the sun at Jatuchak, ranging from ornaments, pets, household items to apparel.

Here’s a cute candle-holder in the style of Cinderella’s carriage that I bought to decorate my home:

What I particularly like about Jatuchak is that you are able to find exclusive, one-of-a-kind apparel designed by Bangkok’s up and coming designers. Platinum mall may be the place to go for wholesale apparel, but if you are looking for unique designs and decorative items, Jatuchak tops the charts for me.

The only grouse I have is that it can be extremely hot and humid to shop here, especially during the summer months, but the weather certainly didn’t pose as a deterrent to the hoards of tourists visiting the popular weekend market.

One important tip for shopping here – get hold of the map because it is so easy to get lost! And for all you shopaholics, if you see anything that catches your fancy here, please just buy it immediately before you lose your way and end up disappointed.

Having gotten you all excited about shopping, I know you must be wondering where on earth I’m hiding the rest of the items that I promised to sell! I’m still sorting out some of my clothes from Bangkok for sale, so do bear with me! They’ll be up soon!

Bangkok: It’s Happened To Be A Closet

July 13, 2011 by Regina Chow 1 Comment
I have a habit of visiting interesting cafes both locally and overseas. It’s Happened To Be A Closet (grammatically incorrect, I know) was the second cafe we visited in Bangkok, again at the recommendation of my good friend, Lyndie.

Before I even entered the quaint little shop at Siam Square, the mid-20th century furniture strategically placed right outside the shopfront had already caught my eye. I absolutely love beautiful furniture, especially furniture reminiscent of yesteryear. The fine craftsmanship is unrivaled and the geometric shapes are beyond enchanting.

It’s Happened To Be A Closet (I have to admit the grammar made me cringe a little) really resembles a closet bursting with clothes. One wouldn’t expect to find a cafe here as it is safely tucked away in an inconspicuous corner on the 2nd floor of this fashion store.

This treasure trove has an intriguing mesh of curiosities, cheerful gerberas , funny looking toys (check out Pinocchio on the shelf!), mis-matched furniture and clothes. We felt like kids, marveling at interesting artifacts in every nook and corner. Honestly, this cafe evokes such a warm, cozy feeling, you almost feel like a guest in a friend’s home.

Somehow, cafes that are linked to fashion labels or stores never do disappoint when it comes to food, especially if they serve Italian cuisine. I still can’t get over how pasta tastes so much better in Bangkok vis-Γ -vis Singapore or even Italy for that matter. Perhaps Thai spices were added?

We loved the eclectic interior decor so much that we took photos of practically everything in the cafe. There we were, scouting for the perfect angles and clicking away on our cameras.

Even the washroom was not spared. I was so enthralled by it because the entrance looks just like a closet!

Finally, here are our parting shots:

This toy motorcycle reminds me of a toy that I had when I was in primary school. It brings back fond memories as I used to ride all over the house on a similar motorcycle.

Bangkok: Vertigo and Moon Bar@Banyan Tree

July 12, 2011 by Regina Chow 2 Comments
If you are looking for a restaurant or bar with a mesmerizing view to chill out, Vertigo and Moon Bar is the place to go. Perched 61 floors atop Banyan Tree Bangkok, the open air lounge here is the perfect spot for admiring the captivating cityscape of Bangkok by night.

Forgive me for the blurred landscape shots though. I didn’t use flash because if I did, I wouldn’t have been able to capture the dazzling city lights in its original glory. The winds are pretty strong too, so if you go there without a tripod, this is what you’ll end up with!

Still, the landscape looks glorious. Don’t you agree? πŸ™‚

It was absolutely divine, enjoying a glass of moscato in the company of good old friends, facing a panoramic view of the city and feeling the wind ruffle your hair (and erm.. dress too when you stand up, so girls, beware!). What I also liked about this place was the immaculate service, delivered with utmost sincerity and a warm smile.

To me, this was an out-of-this-world experience (in case you were wondering, it’s not because of the apparition in the collage below! LOL) and definitely the highlight of our trip.

I would certainly recommend this place to anyone visiting Bangkok.

Address:
Banyan Tree Bangkok
21/100 South Sathon Road
Sathon, Bangkok 10120
Thailand
Tel: +66 2 679 1200
Fax: +66 2 679 1199
E-mail: bangkok@banyantree.com

However, do take note of the strict dress code here – closed toe shoes and long trousers for the gentlemen and definitely no shorts for either gender.

In the event that you do turn up in shorts, t-shirt and slippers, fret not, for the restaurant cum bar provides patrons with a change of clothes too.

Now, that’s what I call service!

Bright Neons

July 11, 2011 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
I love how these vibrant neon colours bring out the sunshine, warmth and liveliness of the summer season.

The mere thought of these colours perk me up instantly, even on days when I feel lethargic or dreary. Do they have the same effect on you too?

Bangkok: Greyhound Cafe

July 9, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments
If you think the name of the cafe sounds strangely familiar, you’re probably acquainted with Greyhound, a famous Thai designer label. Greyhound Cafe belongs to them.
Greyhound was the only Thai fashion label that was invited to showcase its collection at the recent Audi Festival. Now, Greyhound apparel can also be found at Tangs and I’m eagerly awaiting the day that they decide to open Greyhound cafes in Singapore.

I myself was initially oblivious to the existence of this cafe until my good friend Lyndie highlighted that I definitely have to go there for a meal. The fusion Thai-Italian food and Thai fried rice here were so scrumptious, every bite was bursting with flavours and we eventually reached a state of euphoria! This was one of our most orgasmic gastronomic (what a mouthful) experiences ever!

Honestly, you will never find food of this quality on our shores, not even in our fine dining restaurants, unless you’re talking about fine dining Chinese restaurants. Then again, that’s a totally different ball game altogether.

If you haven’t been to Greyhound Cafe, do pay them a visit when you are next in Bangkok ;).

Address:

1st floor, Siam Paragon mall
BTS stop: Siam
Telephone: +66 2 129 4409 or 129 4410

I heard they have plans to open their first cafe outside of Bangkok in Hong Kong. Come to Singapore please!

Bangkok: Elephant Rides

July 9, 2011 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
Next up on our itinerary was the elephant ride. It was an exhilarating experience for us as it was our first time sitting on elephants and trekking through a jungle!

Here’s presenting our very obedient and docile elephant! When his trainer asked him to say hello to us, he lifted his trunk upwards and waved it in our direction. So cute right?

Actually, my heart nearly stopped when he did that because it was already so wobbly up there, I thought I was going to fall any time! Shihui and I were screaming and clinging on for our dear lives, yet at the same time wondering why everyone else around us seemed so relaxed. Well, you’ll find out why at the end of the post.

The most exciting part of the ride was when the elephant entered the river.

It was a picture-perfect moment, but also a petrifying one because our seat came with a flimsy seat belt, unlike the rest who had metal rods to prevent them from slipping. We only realised this after we took a photo of Raf and Mithila. Check out their seat below.

Now, compare their seat with mine. As you can see, I hardly had any protection!

That totally explained why my face bore such a striking resemblance to dear Miss Marc on my Marc by Marc Jacobs bag.

I asked the trainer if I looked like her and he burst out laughing! -_-“”

Bangkok: Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

July 8, 2011 by Regina Chow No Comments

There are many floating markets in Bangkok, but the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, situated about 100km southwest of Bangkok, is the most famous of them all.

Our adventure began even before we arrived at our destination. As our van was about to leave the city, the engine stalled and we were stuck on a road with 5 lanes of heavy traffic! Fortunately, the big and burly men in our group took the initiative to save the damsels in distress. Raf’s hubby, Mithila, looked like he was truly enjoying himself though!

After what seemed like an eternity, we finally found ourselves on the boat to the floating market.

The photos give a false impression that the surroundings are serene and the waters are calm, but when you are on the boat itself, you’ll feel the boat rocking from side to side, with the choppy waters threatening to engulf you at every point of the journey. It felt rather precarious I must say, especially if you are seated right in front.

I tried to distract myself by taking every opportunity to soak in the sights with the breeze caressing my face. The rows of teak houses on stilts provide an insight into the everyday lives of the Thais living in this part of the country, and if you pay attention to the sidewalks, you’ll see some of the inhabitants going about their daily activities.

I looked on in wide-eyed wonder. Going back to basics without technology and gadgets may seem daunting at times, but the smiles and laughter permeating the surroundings seemed to tell me otherwise.

Travelling alongside us were many other tourists and visitors from all around the world, armed with their digital and video cameras and trusty hats. Many of them seemed awed by the rustic surroundings and the inhabitants’ way of life. I wonder if the residents here feel like zoo animals since tourists come by the truckloads everyday.

There came a point when we all had to alight and board a smaller boat that will take us around the shops. But lo and behold, the congestion was so bad, we decided to just camwhore and shop by foot.

The lively chatter among hawkers drowned out every noise imaginable. It was quite an eye-opening experience! It felt almost similar to being in a wet market in Singapore, although erm… the floating market is certainly a lot wetter. LOL, sorry I know I’m lame.

Plus, you can find anything and everything here, ranging from fruits, cooked food, to hats and clothes. I bought my yellow hat here as well!

And finally, to reward you lovelies for reading till this point, I am putting up the top in the above photo for sale!

You’ll be getting a brand new piece of course. This top is made of silky satin material. What I love about it is the cute peter pan collar and the rainbow polka dots which make this top incredibly cute. The seam in the middle of the top is actually made up of 6 overlapping cloth panels, giving it a 3-dimensional feel. πŸ˜‰ You can easily pair it with shorts, like I did, or tuck it in a high-waisted skirt for work.

Price: S$27.90 (inclusive of normal mail postage) – SOLD –
Size: Fits UK 6-8

E-mail me at regina.chow@gmail.com if you’ll like to purchase it. I only have 1 piece!

Bangkok: The Land of Massage and Delicious Food

July 7, 2011 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
Travelling has become such an addictive hobby that I have to leave the country at least once in 3 months. Besides visiting Hong Kong and Bangkok this year, I’ll be off to Europe again in another 2 months. There are plans for us to relocate for a while too, but I’ll save that story for another time.
My recent trip to Bangkok was a very fruitful one because I have been there on so many other occasions, but this was the first time I actually balanced the shopping bit with a dose of sight-seeing.

We stayed at Centrepoint Petchburi, a very affordable serviced apartment in the Pratunam area which is within walking distance to the popular Platinum mall. The room was spick and span, the service staff were warm and friendly (typical of most Thais, and I’m grateful for that), but most importantly, the hotel was centrally located. We had absolutely no complaints whatsoever.

Thanks to my dear friend Lyndie, who gave us fantastic recommendations for food and massage, we had our itinerary planned for the rest of the day.

First up was a relaxing massage at Healthland Spa. Healthland Spa is one of the better spas around. It is affordable without compromising on ambience, skills and service. For instance, the traditional thai massage is priced at 450 baht, which works out to be less than S$20! Do bear in mind that Thailand has a tipping culture, so It’s important to tip the masseuse after the fabulous massage in your dreamy, euphoric state.

Before hunger pangs got the better of us, we made a beeline for Baan Klang Naam, a seafood joint tucked away in an inconspicuous alley away from the city.

Baan Klang Naam overlooks the Chao Praya river and is arguably one of the best seafood restaurants in Bangkok. The food is flavourful, the portions are massive and the tom yum soup (who doesn’t love tom yum?!) here is so tasty and authentic, it’s actually memorable!

If you’re thinking of having dinner there, it’ll be best to make a reservation in advance via your hotel concierge.

Here’s the address for your reference:

288 Soi 14 Rama III Road,
Bangkok 10120
Tel.: +66 (0) 2292 2037, +66 (0) 2292 0175

In my upcoming post, you’ll also see what Bangkok has to offer for adventure and thrill seekers! πŸ˜‰
