Shopping in Bangkok during the New Year

March 19, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments

It’s funny how my “pilgrimage” to Bangkok seems to have become a bi-annual affair. Last year alone, I stepped foot on the Land of Smiles twice within a 6 month span. If you’re interested, you can read more about my earlier visit in June here.

Then in December, Bangkok beckoned again. Karen, JW and I decided to spend our New Year’s Eve holiday there. It was such a spontaneous decision! We booked the tickets and accommodation on a whim just one week before and poof, before we knew it, we were raring to go! This time, we travelled by Tiger Airlines as the ticket prices were rather exorbitant during the New Year period. The main objective of going to Bangkok was to eat, shop, and eat…and shop. You get the drift.
Shopping began bright and early at the budget terminal. Both Karen and I gravitated to the MAC counter like bees to honey. Before long, we were chatting merrily with the sales assistant and making a beeline for the checkout counter.

After we checked in at our hotel at Centrepoint Petchburi (near Platinum Mall), out we went for yet another dose of shopping. Our plans to shop at Platinum Mall were initially thwarted as we decided to explore a new mall called Shibuya 19. It was rather boring as most of the shops were closed due to the New Year celebrations and the floods that occurred some months back seemed to have taken a toll on the variety of products available.

The same could be said for Platinum Mall, but still, the shopaholics in us manifested in more ways than one. Well, well, what can I say? Old habits die hard!

Queen Victoria Building

March 18, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments
QVB is probably the most beautiful and iconic shopping malls that I’ve come across in a long time. Its romanesque design, dome-shaped arches and colourful stained glass are just some of the highlights of this historical building that dates back to 1898.

There are days when all I want to do is sit down, have a cup of tea and watch the crowd go by. The Vienna cafe here is one such lovely spot here. On days when I crave for dim sum, Fat Buddha on the top floor of QVB is where I’ll head to.

I love walking in Sydney so there are times when I’ll just walk all the way to Circular Quay from George Street. Now that I’m back in Singapore, walking has become a thing of the past. The weather here is so hot and humid!!

Mardi Gras 2012

March 16, 2012 by Regina Chow 4 Comments
We caught a glimpse of Mardi Gras the very day that we headed down to Paddington. It was a raining intermittently throughout the parade at Oxford Street but the rain certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the parade performers and party-goers.
Whenever the rain got a little heavier, the umbrellas sprang open like a field of blooming black mushrooms, but whenever the performers came our way, the umbrellas would miraculously disappear, without fail, one after another. In place of the umbrellas were straining necks and snapping cameras, accompanied by loud cheers from the crowds. Many of the party-goers, us included, bought stools from an enterprising Chinese lady who braved the rain along the pavement, peddling her plastic stools at $10 each. Haha, the stool sits in our bedroom today and JW intends to take it back to us for Singapore. Don’t ask me why.

Mardi Gras celebrates diversity in the Australian society, particularly the acceptance of gays, lesbians and transgenders. Kylie Minogue is the icon of the gay community and needless to say, her presence as the guest-of-honour was a huge crowd-puller.

It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least, especially when the topic of homosexuality is still a rather controversial one in the country that I come from. The outrageous, barely there costumes, fearless attitudes and passionate performances were a sight to behold, regardless of which side of the team you cheered for. 🙂

Blue Mountains

March 15, 2012 by Regina Chow 2 Comments

A trip to Australia (or anywhere for that matter) will never be complete without a little rockclimbing for JW. Last Saturday, we embarked on our journey to the Blue Mountains, Australia’s rockclimbing mecca. We met up with JW’s friend, Assad, at Boronia Point before our descent into the great abyss of mud, dirt, and trees.
Yes, before you get to climb, you first have to do some bushwalking, although this seemed more like jungle bashing to me (JW agreed with me on this one). I was not prepared for this despite my earlier adventures in Rodellar, Spain.
The terrain was tightly lined with bushes, thorns and trees, accompanied by countless wet puddles of mud and slosh thanks to the heaviest rainfall that Sydney has ever experienced, which took place just a couple of days before.

It didn’t help that JW and I were both wearing our Keen shoes, which are essentially shoes that look like sandals.

Needless to say, our feet and shoes ended up soaking wet. Did I also mention that I brought my prada gauffre sling bag with me? I must have been out of my mind. It was a miracle that both my bag and I emerged unscathed.

There were also many slippery sandstone formations 2-3 times my height that stood erect at 90 degrees with hardly any footholds and I had to rely on the 2 strong men or the tree branches around me for support as I clambered over the rocks with much difficulty, one after another. I seriously have no idea how the climbers could WALK down the rocks with such incredible ease (akin to walking down stairs) when there are absolutely no gaps for you to place your shoes and one wrong step will send you, quite literally, to the abyss of no return.

Whenever I had no idea how to conquer these huge rocks, I sat myself down or simply went on all fours, like a dog. Haha! Don’t ask me how I made it there and back. I refuse to think about it and I’m pretty sure that would be my first and last time there. Cross my heart!

I honestly think that no other tourist (other than rock-climbers) have experienced Blue Mountains the way I have. JW joked that I am probably the most well-traveled non-climber. LOL.

This is what normal tourists would go to Blue Mountains for – The Three Sisters.“The commonly told legend of the Three Sisters is that three sisters (Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and Gunnedoo’) lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe). They fell in love with three men from a neighbouring tribe (the Nepean tribe), but marriage was forbidden by tribal law. The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters. A major tribal battle ensued, and the sisters were turned to stone by an elder to protect them, but he was killed in the fighting and no one else could turn them back. This legend is claimed to be an Indigenous Australian Dreamtime legend.” – Wikipedia

The three sisters certainly don’t look very much like one another, except for the patch of vegetation perched atop each peak. Looks a little like hair doesn’t it? 😛

Bobbin Head

March 14, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments

Bobbin Head is part of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, located 25km north of Sydney. My uncle brought us to this lovely place recently but it was pouring then. Hence, we made a mental note to return and that was just what we did!

The vast expanse of greenery serves as a beautiful backdrop for picnics and barbeques. You can also take a boat ride to explore the breathtaking vicinity at a leisurely pace.

For some strange reason, I actually prefer how Bobbin Head looks when it rains. When it rained the last time we were there, it was shrouded in a light blanket of mist, which exudes an air of mystery.

Pretty enchanting, isn’t it? Rain or shine, this is one park that I’ll be sure to revisit. The next time I head there, I am going to lie on the grass with outstretched arms and a picnic basket full of goodies. 🙂

My Favourite Asian food in Sydney

March 13, 2012 by Regina Chow 5 Comments
Today’s post is dedicated to Asian food in Sydney. It’s so hard not to turn into a glutton when good food is everywhere. Good things ought to be shared, so I thought I’ll share some of my favourite restaurants for Asian food in Sydney!

1) Malabar

I never used to be a fan of South Indian food, but coming here changed everything. Malabar was mentioned in The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2012 and is famous for its spectacular dosai. The butter chicken and beef vindaloo curries are fantastic too!

-Malabar-

Crows Nest
NSW 2065

2) Toraya

I’ve a soft spot for Japanese food and the sashimi here is one of the best I’ve tried. The teriyaki chicken set is another of my favourites. Grilled to perfection in delicious teriyaki sauce and just a hint of sesame, the crisp chicken skin tantalizes your taste buds and prepares you for the inviting, tender chicken flesh wrapped within. Superbly yummy.

Shop 212/214, Level 2,
Mandarin Shopping Centre
65 Albert Ave., Chatswood NSW 2067

3) My Selection Cafe – Vietnamese

I was wowed by the authenticity and affordability of the Vietnamese dishes at My Selection Cafe. The soup base is absolutely to die for and the beef is succulent and tender. Plus, it’s located in the heart of the city and is just a stone’s throw from Wynyard station. 😉

-My Selection Cafe-

Hunter Connection
Basement, Shop 8, 7-13 Hunter Street
Sydney NSW 2000

4) Sailors Thai

I went to the branch at The Rocks on Valentine’s Day. The Pad Thai and Green Curry Chicken are sumptuous!

-Sailors Thai-

106 George Street, The Rocks
Bookings: 02 9251 2466

5) ZenQ

ZenQ hails from Taiwan and offers a wide variety of Taiwanese desserts. I especially love the Snow Ice because it melts in your mouth instantly. My favourites are the green tea and mango ones. 🙂

Manly Beach

March 8, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments

We prayed for good weather the night before we planned our Manly beach outing, and thank goodness lady luck was shining on us! I can’t begin to tell you how much I love the beaches in Australia. The sand is silky soft, the skies are such a gorgeous shade of turquoise blue and the waters here are just so sparkling clear.
Don’t even get me started on the bikini babes and surfer dudes. With eye candies sprinkled in  every corner of the beach, one really can’t ask for more!

We chilled out at the beach for a while before heading indoors for some light bites. The baked scallops and bruschetta were divine. I mean seriously, I haven’t tasted anything that isn’t divine in Sydney. That only means I’ve been putting on weight, but I’m absolutely loving the whole experience!

Paddington’s Old World Charm

March 7, 2012 by Regina Chow 3 Comments
Paddington Market takes place beside the church every Saturday from 10am onwards. If you’re looking for one of a kind jewellery, knick knacks, art pieces and paintings, you’ll be in for a treat. 😉
We took a stroll around the market before stopping by the church, which is quite an architectural marvel. There’s an old world European charm about the building, which manifests in the brown washed stone walls and Romanesque pillars. Even my outfit that day seemed to fit in perfectly with the background. The brass handrails are probably the only tell-tale signs that we’re in 2012.

Hat and stockings from Forever New
 Lace top from F21
Mustard knit cardigan from City Plaza
Pearl belt stolen from my mum’s wardrobe (haha!)
Swallow skorts from Bangkok
Black pumps from Chanel
My favourite part of this outfit is the black satin ribbon behind this delicate lace top. This, to me, is the epitome of elegance. It also adds an interesting twist to an otherwise boring lace top.

Hello Paddington

March 7, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments

Located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Paddington is a quirky fashion enclave where hidden treasures are unraveled. The architecture here is reminiscent of yesteryear and each shophouse is home to eclectic fashion boutiques and quaint cafes.

Every alley reveals a smorgasbord of beautiful trinkets and apparel. Even the decor of the shops took my breath away.

Established and emerging Sydney designers line the streets and every corner spells the discovery of something unique and special.

Even if shopping isn’t your cup of tea, embarking on a journey to this part of the city will open your eyes to architectural delights of rich heritage. Take a walk down the streets, take in the sights, and when your heart desires, stop by a cafe for a cuppa tea.
This is probably one of my favourite places in the city. After all, who doesn’t like to bask in the beauty of magnificent designs and creations that set your hearts aflutter?

Pink Ballerina

March 4, 2012 by Regina Chow No Comments

My aunt exclaimed in utmost delight that I looked like a ballerina when she saw me in this outfit, hence the title of this post. It’s a pity that I can’t dance ballet for nuts, for this outfit drew many compliments that very day. Some came up to me to gush about how dolly the entire ensemble was while others were curious about how I did my hair.
Indeed, this only proves that Australians are some of the nicest people around. I am very grateful that I haven’t witnessed any form of racism to date and most importantly, everyone has been extremely sweet, friendly and helpful.
My only gripe is that the banks here are much less efficient than what I’m used to back home. Oh well, I guess compromises have to be made. After all, I do appreciate the slower pace of life here. 😉
